Chapter 1: The Public Rejection
"I, Alpha Kael of the Silver Moon Pack, hereby reject you, Eva, as my mate and my future Luna."
The cold, ruthless declaration sliced through the grand ceremonial hall, echoing brutally against the high stone walls. It wasn't just a sentence; it was a public execution of her soul.
Tonight was supposed to be Eva’s fairy tale. It was Kael’s succession night, and her eighteenth birthday—the exact moment the sacred mate bond was meant to awaken and seal their fates forever. Instead, she stood under the flickering light of the lunar braziers, stripped of her dignity before hundreds of whispering pack members.
The moment Kael uttered those words, a violent, agonizing shockwave ripped through Eva’s core. The fragile, newly sparking bond was brutally severed before it could even fully form. She gasped, a ragged whimper escaping her lips. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed heavily onto the polished marble, her hands clutching her burning chest. It felt as if liquid fire were rushing through her veins.
"Kael… why?" Eva choked out, forcing her tear-filled eyes upward to look at the man she had loved unconditionally for three years. "I gave you everything. When the northern covens poisoned you, I bled to nurse you back to health. When the rival packs blockaded our borders, I was the one who calculated the ley-line routes and managed the moonstone reserves to keep this pack from starving! I kept your legacy alive with my mind when your claws failed!"
Kael looked down from the high dais, his handsome features carved from stone. He straightened the heavy fur of his Alpha robes. A flash of guilt crossed his eyes, but it was quickly swallowed by cold pragmatism.
"I know what you did, Eva," Kael said, his voice hard, though strained with the weight of a desperate ruler. "Your intellect kept us breathing, but it cannot win a war. Look around. My pack is surrounded by enemies. Our ancient supply routes are bleeding dry. We need a queen whose bloodline brings armies and unyielding territorial alliances, not just a brilliant strategist I have to protect. You haven't shifted. You have no wolf. In the brutal hierarchy of our world, you are a liability I can no longer afford."
A heavy silence fell over the crowd. Not a single soul stepped forward to defend her. They all knew the truth—Eva had been the administrative backbone of the pack, but in the merciless werewolf world, survival demanded primal strength, and a wolf-less mate was a luxury a dying pack couldn't keep.
"Besides," Kael’s tone softened as a voluptuous woman stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains, "a true Alpha deserves a true Luna. Meet Sasha, the daughter of the Blood Claw Alpha. My chosen mate. Her pack will lift the embargo."
Sasha glided forward, her silk dress shimmering like snake scales. She wrapped her arms around Kael’s neck, pressing her body against his with triumphant pride. She shot Eva a look of sheer malice disguised as pity.
"Oh, poor thing," Sasha purred, flashing a massive, blood-ruby ring right in Eva's pale, tear-stained face. "Don’t be bitter, sweetie. Kael needs a woman whose blood carries true power, not a pathetic orphan who spends her days counting crystals in the archive room. You should thank him for letting you live despite your sheer weakness."
The humiliation burned hotter than the physical pain. Eva stared at their entwined bodies. The man who used to whisper promises of forever in her ear was now betraying her to secure a desperate political alliance, watching another woman tear her apart with dead, indifferent eyes.
"Sign the blood-pact dissolution, Eva." Kael flicked a heavy piece of runic parchment off the edge of the dais. The dark, enchanted runes glowed faintly as the parchment fluttered down, landing right at the tips of her worn-out shoes. "And clear out of my territory by midnight. You are a rogue now. Exiled."
*Midnight.* Outside, a violent thunderstorm was howling, lightning tearing the black sky to pieces. He was throwing her out into the deadly, rogue-infested wilderness, completely defenseless, knowing she had no wolf to protect herself.
Eva closed her eyes, forcing her tears to stop. The crushing despair deep inside her suddenly solidified, turning into a freezing, razor-sharp rage.
She didn't touch the parchment. She forced herself to stand, her spine snapping straight as she locked eyes with the man who had just destroyed her life.
"You will regret this, Kael," Eva said. Her voice wasn't a sob; it was a chillingly calm prophecy that silenced the entire hall. "I swear to the Moon Goddess, a day will come when you will beg on your knees for my forgiveness. And when that day comes, I will use the very secrets of this pack to watch you lose everything."
Kael let out a mocking bark of laughter, though it sounded hollow. "Regret? Over a powerless exile? Never. Sentinels, throw her out of my sight!"
Two massive Lycan enforcers stepped forward, grabbing Eva ruthlessly by her arms and dragging her across the polished floor. Sasha’s triumphant laughter echoed behind her as the heavy iron doors slammed shut, locking her out in the freezing, torrential downpour.
Eva collapsed into the mud outside, the rain instantly soaking her to the bone. She was broken, exiled, and utterly alone.
But as she lay shivering, staring into the dark, forbidden depths of the Blackwood Forest ahead, a strange, ancient heat suddenly flared deep within her core. A pulse that didn't belong to her echoed in her mind—so powerful, it made the very earth beneath her tremble.
The ancient, dormant seal in her blood was finally cracking.as finally cracking.
