HER HOLIDAY MIRACLE

The city of Ganye glittered that night like a crown set with jewels. Lights spilled across the streets, music floated from the banquet hall of the Manzo mansion, and laughter echoed in the gardens where roses bloomed under the moon. Inside the great house, every servant hurried like bees, preparing for the wedding of the year. Lakasan stood before her mirror, dressed in silk the color of pearl, her hair woven with tiny diamonds that caught the light when she moved. She was only twenty-one, yet her beauty carried a quiet maturity, as though sorrow and hope had met in her eyes. Tomorrow she would be the bride of Kenneth, her father’s business partner’s son. A union of wealth and influence, sealed by tradition and expectation. Her late mother’s portrait hung in the corner of the room. Lakasan often looked at it for strength. “If only you were here, Mama,” she whispered softly, touching the frame. The woman in the painting, graceful and calm, seemed to smile back. But not everyone in the mansion smiled. Beyond the polished doors, her stepmother and stepsister whispered in venomous tones. The stepmother, wrapped in emerald silk, leaned close to her daughter. “Tomorrow belongs to us,” she said. “When Kenneth sees you instead of her, everything will change. Tonight, we act.” The stepsister, her lips painted the color of ripe cherries, laughed. “She is too innocent, too trusting. By morning, Father will despise her, and Kenneth will never look her way again.” Back in the banquet hall, guests raised their glasses to the bride-to-be. Lakasan smiled politely as she lifted her cup. She did not notice the hand that brushed against her cup, slipping something unseen into her drink. The music grew louder, the lights blurred, and the room began to spin. Lakasan’s laughter faded as her head grew heavy. She excused herself, her vision clouding. Servants guided her away, whispering that perhaps she was tired. By the time the night ended, she was no longer in her room. When Lakasan opened her eyes, it was to the soft glow of an unfamiliar ceiling and the scent of expensive cologne. She lay on sheets too fine for any guest chamber, and beside her… a man. Not Kenneth. A stranger.
