Prologue
Lorna’s awareness suddenly peaked. She could feel him- the air around her thick with his scent. Her snout twitched as she honed in on where he lurked in the shadows of the damp forest. It was too dark and his distance too far even to catch a glimpse of his silhouette. But she knew it was him. The smell of him was distinctly other, but familiar at the same time.
Memories flooded her sensations and she could almost taste the sweet heat of his breath on the delicate skin of her human form. The fur along the curve of her spine stood on end with anticipation.
Was he here for more? Or had he returned to fulfill the purpose that originally brought him to her?
She was well aware of the dangers that humans offered. She knew her hide could be skinned for a pelt. The pack so often avoided human settlements for this very reason. Humans lay claim to anything- the land, their livestock, especially the body of a wolf ignorant enough to stray.
The moment she crossed paths with him on one of her lone outings, pack law left her mind. The intensity she felt when they first locked eyes left her throwing caution to the wind with little regard. Silas would have her tail if he found out that she had shifted in front of a human. Not to mention what occurred after she had revealed herself.
Silas. Her alpha. Her mate. The pang of guilt in her stomach made her want to sprint back to her pack. She pushed it down, stuffing thoughts of her mate to the corners of her mind. She and this human were here, alone. Again.
