Chapter Ten The music ended, the phantom fingers of the touchlyre slipped from his mind, and Kriss looked up at the silent crowd . . . and saw Tevera at the back of the common room, wearing the same clothes she’d worn the night of the attack. She jerked her head toward the door and went out. He followed when he could, searching the street carefully before crossing to the same alley in which they’d met before. Though he saw no one, stepping into the dark passage where he’d been attacked made him feel unpleasantly vulnerable. “Tevera?” he whispered as he rounded the corner into darkness. “Here,” she said, and he felt her light touch on his arm. “I’d about given up on you.” Her touch vanished. “I promised I would help you. No one in the Family breaks a promise.” He bit off a hot retort.
