" I need you to sign the papers Declan, there's no saving this marriage."
"But-"
"Declan I met someone and I want to try and be in a relationship but I can't do that with the divorce looming over my head. Please just sign the papers."
I picked up my pen and signed the divorce papers in front of me. I had gotten them almost 6 months ago and had stored them in my desk drawer at work where they sat, forgotten, until my soon-to-be ex-wife had rung my phone.
I hadn't signed them yet because I had hope, hope that we could fix this like we had done the last time. But Alice was done, she had said goodbye to this marriage the day that she had moved out of our matrimonial home. It wasn't fair for me to keep her imprisoned in a marriage that she wanted nothing to do with.
"I've signed them," I said as I dropped my pen on the desk and placed the papers in the brown envelope that they had been delivered in.
"I'll drop them off later-"
"No, I'll pick them up at the base on my way home."
"Alice-" I began.
"Please Declan don't make this harder. Leave them by the secretary and I'll pick them up."
I sighed,"okay fine I'll do that." I said running a hand through my hair.
"Declan." She said after a few minutes of silence.
"Yeah?" I answered as I stood up and made my way to the window where I watched the recruits jog around the base in their military pants and army green t-shirts.
"Thank you and Declan?"
"Yeah?" I answered in a low voice.
"I do love you.. I'm just not in love with you anymore."
She hung up and I swallowed the lump in my throat before making my way back to my desk.
I picked up the picture frame that decorated my desk,it was taken 4 years ago on our vacation to New Zealand. Alice wore a red summer dress while I wore a white shirt with cargo shorts. We looked happy as we smiled for the camera, we looked like we were in love... we were in love, back then when everything was perfect and happiness lived in our home.
I opened my drawer and placed the frame in it before closing it. My marriage was over, there was no point in keeping memories of the past, they would only do more damage than good. It was over and the sooner I accepted it the quicker I could move on.
A knock sounded on my door and I looked up to see one of my soldiers walk in with a white envelope in his hands.
"Sir this arrived for you, it's sealed with red tape." he said standing at the door.
'Oh the Mullins case' I thought as I beckoned him over.
Red tape meant confidential and important, it was not to be opened by anyone other than the person it had been sent to.
He handed me the envelope and I placed it on my desk before picking up my sealed divorce papers and handing it to him.
"Please drop this at the reception." I requested as I opened the the envelope.
"Yes sir." he stood at attention before making his way out, closing the door behind him.
I pulled out the picture of my new assignment and placed it on my desk, raising a brow in surprise.
I took a long look at her before standing up and making my way to the coffee table where a jug of water sat. I poured myself a glass before chugging it down and making my way back to my seat.
I picked up the photograph and hummed in both surprise and appreciation. She was beautiful, there was no other way to describe her but absolutely beautiful.
She had gorgeous dark brown eyes, a round face, kinky black hair, full lips and a smile that radiated warmth and happiness.
My eyes raked over the picture once more, this time taking my time and paying attention to every single detail of the headshot I had been given. I couldn't stop looking at the photograph, it was if I had been caught in a spell that forced me to look at her.
She was my next and last assignment before I took a well deserved break. It had been years since I had taken leave and it was about time I slowed down and relaxed.
I was always working and it had been one of the main reasons that Alice has left me, she had felt as if I was married to my work while she was my mistress that barely got any attention from me at all. I had been accused of being in love with my work and I had to admit, she might have been right, might.
I loved my wife and had gotten so caught up in trying to ensure that we lived a comfortable life whilst ensuring that our future kids would not suffer like I had, that I had started slacking in my duties as a husband. I had failed Alice and made her doubt my love for her, and I had failed to see this because I was so caught up in trying to build a legacy and protect my country.
The fact that I ruined my marriage haunted me every single day, I was the reason that after only two years of marriage we had to endure months of marriage counselling in order to not only figure out why our marriage wasn't working but to try and fix it as well.
It was my fault that not even a year later Alice moved out and sent me divorce papers. We hadn't even made it to 5 years and we had already called it quits.
Maybe my mother was right, I had turned out exactly like my father and I hated it. I never wanted to be like that good for nothing coward, never!
I stood up and packed my bag. I had to get home and pack because in a few hours I would be sent on my mission.
My job was to extract the female and get her to safety. Normally this type of an assignment would be given to a Lieutenant but this young woman played a very important part in the possible cracking of a case that the US government has been working on for years. Making a break on the case would mean a lot of lives would be saved while a lot of bad men would be jailed.
The government needed someone who was able to execute their job without a hitch and get rid of any problems without making a show of it, someone who knew how to do things and do them quietly. And who better to do the job than the Admiral himself?
All I had to do was take her to a safe house and stay with her for a few weeks until our key witness testified in court, and then she was free to go.
Looking after a female couldn't be that hard, I thought as I made my way out of the office making sure to lock my door, I didn't need anyone snooping around in my absence. Not that I kept any important papers in my office, those I kept in my safe at home.
I bid goodbye to my fellow soldiers and made my way to my car, it was time to go home, pack and then do what I did best!
°•°•°
Fuck!
That's the first thing that came to my mind when I caught sight of the package that I had been tasked to extract.
I had thought she was beautiful before but seeing her in person made me realise just how stunning she was. She moved with power, dominance radiating from her with each step that she took. Each sway of her hips had not only me but probably every male in the vicinity thanking the Lord for taking his time and crafting this fine specimen of art.
I was a firm believer in the saying 'that everyone was beautiful in their own way' but this woman.. Her beauty was indescribable. She was a Goddess, a Goddess who had been dipped into a pool of melanin and abundantly blessed with curves.
She glowed, she shone, she was a Melanin Queen.
For a spilt second I forgot why I was in Club Peach standing near the entrance to the ladies bathroom with an unlit cigarette between my lips, even though I didn't smoke and had never smoked before in my life.
Her voice is was drew me out of my trance, it was smooth and soft but firm. I could tell that she was a woman who didn't need to raise her voice to get her point across, she had this presence about her that made you stop and pay attention to whatever it was she was saying.
All I wanted to do was take her and and lead her to the dance floor, I wanted to wind my arms around her waist, rest my nose in the crook of her neck and dance the night away while inhaling her sweet scent.
But alas I couldn't do that, unless I wanted to lose my job and get her killed of course. I had to remain professional and store away any urge to grab her and hold her in my arms.
I groaned as my eyes trailed over the body that laid in my bed, well the bed that would have been mine if I hadn't decided to give it to Mia in the last second.
It had a balcony that faced the front of the farm, sunlight shone in the room all day long and I thought she would appreciate having a room with good lighting hence why I gave her my intended room and took the one next to hers.
She let out a soft moan as she shifted around in bed, the silk sheets framing out her thick thighs and her n*****s playing peek-a-boo on the white shirt that I had changed her into.
I hadn't perved on her body, not even one second. I had simply wrapped her in a sheet, slipped her dress off and then the t-shirt on. It had been a struggle but I had done it while maintaining her modesty. I was a gentleman who did not and would not ever lay his eyes on a woman's nakedness without her permission.
I stood up and exited the bedroom, if I stayed here any longer I was going to get an erection, I was a man who had blood running through his veins. And the sight before me was a deliciously sinful one that would make any man get hard,at least any man with clear sight that is.
I strolled into the kitchen and rummaged the cupboards for something to make. The kitchen was filled to the brim with food as well as the pantry, we had enough food to last us a while.
I took out some ingredients having decided to make spaghetti Bolognese and there was ice-cream for dessert. I was a good cook, not the best but I knew my way around the kitchen quite well.
It was about half an hour later that I heard feet shuffling down the stairs. I looked up from the pan where I had my meatballs simmering in my sauce and at Mia who stood at the kitchen threshold, hair disheveled and eyes filled with confusion.
"You're the guy from the club. What the f**k is going on?" she asked before frantically looking around the kitchen, the confusion in her eyes being replaced with fear.
She looked to her left, down the hall that led to the front door. I could see the gears turning in her head and watched as she made a run for the door. I walked to the threshold and leaned against the wall of the arched entryway and watched as she grabbed the doorknob and tried to open the door but failed.
"It's locked."
She ignored me and continued to try and pull the door open.
"Mia it's locked." I said as I watched her give up on opening it and instead focus on breaking it.
She kicked, punched and threw her body against the door, each attempt at escape failing miserably.
It was a sad sight to see, but also an insightful one. She was a fighter who didn't give up easily.
"Mia-" I began moving off the wall and making my way down the hallway.
"Stay away from me!" she screamed as she turned to face me, her body covering the door while tears ran down her face.
The look on her face broke me and made me feel like absolute s**t. She looked so bloody terrified, it made me sick to my stomach.
"Mi-"
"Move or I'll scream." Threatened Mia when I stopped a few feet away from her, blocking her path.
"There's no one else for miles on end. It's just me and you here Mia." I stated my in a calm and friendly voice, arms raised to show that I meant no harm.
"Oh my God!" A look of absolute horror painted her face," You're going to r**e me and then murder me.You psycho!" she screamed in terror before making a fist and aiming for my head.
I dodged the arm and she used this as an opportunity to to push past me and run upstairs.
The bedroom door slammed shut and I sighed as made my way to the kitchen. Maybe she needed some time to calm down and make sense of things before I tried to talk to her again.
I had just picked up the wooden spoon I had been using to stir my sauce when something banged on the floor upstairs. I glanced up at the ceiling and frowned before another sound filled the air, this time it sounded like a piece of furniture.
She was destroying her room, how adult-like. I rolled my eyes before putting the spoon down and making my way upstairs, apron still on.
"Mia, open the door." I requested as I knocked on it.
"No! You're not going to get me you fucker! I'll die before I let you touch me." She screamed as she continued to toss things in her room.
"Mia,I'm Admiral Declan Jameson, I've been sent to protect you." I shouted thought the closed door.
"Protect me? From what?" Asked the female.
Another item was thrown against the wall.
"Your ex."
The smashing stopped immediately.
"What?" asked Mia, her voice although muffled sounded like it was filled with pain.
"Your ex is a highly wanted man. And we have reasons to believe that his associates want you dead as a way to lure him out of his hiding spot. He has made a deal with us. We protect you and he testifies against some of his partners."
"Protect me? The fucker dumped me in a coffee shop! Why would he want to-"
"He cares for you." I answered.
"No he's doesn't. He's an asshole, a jerk and..." Mia broke down into tears.
I heard the bed bounce before loud, muffled cries filled the air.
"Mia can you please open the door."
I waited but she didn't respond so I decided to kick the door open, she could yell and cuss at me later.
The door opened and my heart fell in my chest at the sight of Mia curled in a fetal position and crying her heart out. She looked so broken and all I wanted to do was pull her into my arms and hold her. The sight was heartbreaking.
"Hey it's-" I began as I made my way over to the bed with the intention of at least patting her on the back for comfort.
I couldn't possibly pull her into my arms, that would be wrong and extremely unprofessional.
"Go away. Please." she begged as she pulled the blanket over her body, hiding herself in his warmth while sending a clear message that she wanted to be left alone.
I sighed and took a look at the mess that she had created before doing as she wished. Sometimes one just need some alone time,I would assist her in cleaning the room later.
I made my way out of her destroyed room and closed the door, well at least I tried to but it just swung open again, I would have to fix it later.
I made my way downstairs with two objectives in mind.
1. Finish making something to eat.
2. Call in to base and inform them that we had arrived safely.
A few minutes later I was done cooking and called into base using a burner phone. There was nothing in the house that could be traced, all cellphones had been left hidden in town. We had television but no cable, so Mia would just have to suck it up and watch movies from the various hardrives I had brought with me.
"Admiral I take it that you have collected the package?"questioned a deep voice that belonged to one of the commanding officer on the case.
"Yes sir. The package is in perfect condition."
I wasn't about to fell him that she had
yet to come downsides and was still crying a river. I could hear her soft cries from the living room.
"Good. Keep an eye open and we'll be in touch."
"Yes sir."
I hung up and opened the burner phone, pulling out the simcard and breaking it in half before chucking it in the trash can.
I placed the phone in the drawer before locking it and hiding away the key.
My eyes looked at the clock and I decided to take a short shower before eating and trying to drag Mia out of her bedroom.
She needed to eat something before she got sick, all she had in her system was alcohol.
"Holy f**k!"
I jumped up in surprise, the towel around my waist loosening and dropping to the floor while the one in my hands, that I had been using to dry my hair, fell and joined it's cousin in the wooden floor.
The woman on my bed looked at me, her eyes trailing over my body, lingering a bit too long on my nether regions before meeting my eyes.
"Hm?" she hummed,"not too bad."she mumbled as she leaned against the headboard and crossed her legs.
I quickly bent down to pick up my towel, wrapping it around my waist while my cheeks tinted red with slight embarrassment.
"Get dressed and then start talking. I want to know what Travis has to do with my kidnapping, why I'm in this shirt and why the f**k you thought you could get away with knocking me out.I want to know it all Admiral, every f*****g detail." She said, tone leaving no room for arguments, she meant business.
I held onto my towel and made my way to the closet, clearly this mission was going to be harder than I had originally thought.
