Chapter 2 - Trophy Wife

"I'm sorry for not informing you ahead that your brothers will be there. I put you in an awkward situation, I apologize." He said calmly. He's taking the route to my house. He has been there a lot of times, so he knows the address. "We're able to clear out everything so it's fine. I will talk to my parents as soon as I can. We must inform them as soon as possible of the cancel-" "Do we really have to?" My heart skipped. "Aside from the highschool romance I felt for you, I have no other reasons to marry you. My brothers are completely against it. From that alone, I can tell that the wedding is not going to happen." He has no idea how simply being in a car with him makes me feel so high. I only dreamed of this moment. "We're old enough though. We can make decisions on our own. I heard that you've never been in a relationship... How's that possible with all the boys flocking over you back in college?" My face flushed from the disbelief in his voice in the last sentence. "You're out-of-league obviously. Imagine going through Hunter and Thunder just to take you out on a date. Your old money surname may have already intimidated all boys before they can get to you. There were popular girls in the university then there's you who's admired by everyone." He calmly said. He's actually right. I only had a few friends from elementary to college. My suitors didn't last a week for some reason. "It was a quiet and busy life. I didn't need men." I answered. "I... agreed to marry anyone that my parents proposed. Even it was someone else, I would still do it." My voice cracked when saying that. His chuckle made my face hot. I hope he didn't recognize that it was a lie. There was a silence between us after that. I glanced at his direction only to see his clenching jaw. "Well, thanks to my generational wealth, I'm first in the list." The sarcasm in his tone is uncanny. "Sorry for the mess." He stopped the car in front of a giant white gate. The guards opened it when they recognized the plate number. "I will never force you into marriage, Naomi." My heart raced when his voice became serious. He drove to the pathway going to the entrance of our house. "Your brothers won't approve of anyone unless you show them that you're willing to stand your ground. You have bodyguards following you daily, so it's hard for men to approach you. I am friends with them my whole life and yet my hands were still shaking when we were sitting altogether earlier." He smiled. "They will be less strict if I date someone that they trust. You know like a childhood friend or..." "Oh the guy mentioned at the resto?" I erased the probability that I hinted jealousy from his tone. He parked in front of the entrance. Dad's car was just in front, seemed like he just arrived too. "It's complicated to marry a friend. I would rather stay single than risk everything we had. Thanks for driving me home." I collected my things from the backseat. "Let's not cancel the wedding." The things I was holding slipped from my hand at that very moment. I hope I am not being delusional. There is no hint if joke in his voice and when I looked at his eyes, they were serious. "I can be your husband in the papers. You said you don't have anyone, and you're willing to marry the guy that your parents choose for you. I'm their first preference, and I honestly can't believe it." "What?" I'm suddenly confused with the change of topic. "Someone has to deal with your brothers to get to you. I can be that someone. We don't have to cancel it if the problem is your brothers. We're old, and we want someone to build with. Let's not cancel the wedding." "I guess you didn't get the hint from Hunter. They will never let us rest. They might not attend the wedding. Let's make the best decision to stay civil with each other. If you're thinking about the financial impact, that can be..." His face gets closer. Now, his manly scent is dominating the place and hypnotizing me. "I'm pretty sure, none of us is thinking about the money right now. You were always the highest standard in Stallion, Naomi. I can't even get close to you despite our family's connection. You were always being watched, and I never had the chance to talk to you alone. All of a sudden, marriage came into discussion," he stopped when his face is one inch from mine. I tilted my head to the right when our nose touched. "So please understand me if I am being greedy now, and pushing this wedding to happen. I can deal with your brothers, I will take care of everything." I closed my eyes when his lips brushed with mine. So this is how levitating a first kiss is. "You're willing to marry for the status? You want a trophy wife, Lucas." My voice is loathing. I cannot even meet his eyes as I catch my breath after that kiss. "Well, we can match each other's freak. I'll give you the world. I will always show up for you when you need someone, I can be your bragging right too, Naomi." "What if I still want to cancel the wedding?" I gasped when he reached for the back of my head gently. He made me look at him, but my eyes can't stop looking at his clenched jaw. How is he this close now? After many years of having one-sided crush on this guy, I can't believe he's finally right here in front of me staring at my lips with lust. He didn't hold back for another kiss and I felt something hot in my abdomen. I have been waiting for this man to cross the line. He pulled me closer when I kissed him back. He let go, and I felt the last strand of my pride leaving my body. Why can't I resist him? "You still want to cancel? Then you'll have 3 guys blocking men for you. I will sabotage all your relationships and I can get worse than Hunter." There's a little hint of warning in his tone. "Fine. Take care of my brothers." A smile slowly formed in his lips. Lucas Simon is known as a man who gets what he wants. He had his ways to get the permission of my clan to marry me. He became too invested in the wedding preparation. Everything went smoothly until the wedding day. I cannot explain how I feel when I wake up. There is something in me questioning if this is really the right decision or if I can handle a married life. People start coming into my room to help me prepare for the special day or to just check in me. I watch myself in the mirror as the makeup artists carefully doll me up. The smell of expensive perfumes inside the room make me feel dizzy. When mom notices how quiet I have been, she sat beside me. "Are you alright, honey?" Her voice is calm. I smiled at her and nodded. I was fine in the past few days, but I suddenly feel empty now. I am finally marrying the man of my dreams since highschool but it is not out of love. It will get better from here, right? It is a grand wedding attended by our friends, relatives, business partners, and executives from our company. The security is tight as there are politicians and artists invited. My parents look the happiest of all people there. My brothers are the groom's best men. The thing that makes me happiest is how his parents treat me since we confirmed that the wedding will push through. They treat me like a real daughter. They invite me in their house from time to time and send me gifts when they return from travel in the past 2 months. When the ceremony starts, dad holds my left hand so tight. Mom is smiling at me and looking proud. My heart is pounding fast when the doors of church open. The coordinator signals me to start walking. My parents beside me help ease the overwhelming feelings. The sight of Lucas waiting for me at the altar has brought mix of emotions. I feel deep for him, and he will never know that. 'It's happening.' I keep repeating in my head while walking down the aisle. But I feel empty. The wedding peacefully concluded with a celebratory clap after the mass and we exit the church. My face is all heated when the guests exclaimed for a demand of another kiss outside the church. Lucas who can't stop smiling since the morning asked for permission before he gently kissed me. It is just exhausting taking pictures from morning until the wedding ceremony and up to the reception event. Overall, with the help of our wedding organizers, parents and friends, we were able to wrap it up. I feel completely weary after sending our last guests. I think I have never talked to that number of people in one day before. Lucas did amazing. He keeps the same energy until the after party. He assisted the drivers and guards in loading the gifts to the vans parked in front of our car. He made sure everything is settled before we leave the resort where the reception took place. We could have stayed there like the other guests, but I want to feel home after that tiring day and he agreed to drive home instead of staying the night there. "Good job, Mrs. Simon. Tough work today. Rest for now, I'll wake you up when we get to our house." He said as soon as he entered in the backseat beside me. His secretary got in the driver's seat and one of his guards took the passenger's seat. "You too. You did amazing, Lucas." He smiled as he pulled me close and placed my head on his chest. His scent is starting to become my comfort zone.
