Chapter 3 - Away from the City

2158 Words
Before the wedding, Lucas and I had terms of agreement boiling to one point - we will continue our normal life after marriage. I will still attend my grad school, fulfill my duties in the company as a director, freely attend other engagements with friends and family. He is also free to do as he wishes - his job, hobbies, and other engagements. We are living together in a mansion that he built in his 20s. Willow, my 3-year old husky, gives life to that house. Lucas easily got attached with him. They were already best buddies on the first week that I introduced them to each other. Now that we are living together, he gets closer with him. Lucas is a morning person. He gets up at 5 AM and sometimes takes Willow with him for his morning walk. It's also part of our agreement to have a separate room to respect each other's "privacy". I am more of a night owl, so my day starts a little later than his. I get up at 10 AM, and for a week now, Lucas has been consistently preparing breakfast for me. I leave the house at 12 to attend my class. I go to the office after. Most of my meetings are scheduled in the afternoon, but for some occasions when it cannot be arranged during that time, I skip my classes to prioritize important meetings. I usually work until 10 PM then go to the gym afterwards. It's part of my lifestyle to workout at least 3 days a week. I usually get home around 12 or 1 AM, but these days I make exceptions and come home as early as 11 PM to prepare dinner for Lucas. I feel guilty that he's consistently putting effort into preparing breakfast, so I want to return the favor even though I was never a good cook. He gets home early at 7 PM, and waits for me to have dinner. He has his own gym in the house, but I have never seen him workout here. Willow and him are playing together in the living room while I am preparing dinner on a Friday night. My heart dropped when I heard something shattered in the floor, and it was followed by barks from Willow. "What is that?" I asked calmly. Willow is barking non-stop sounding so shocked. I saw him running to the kitchen and going to my direction. "Why? What did Lucas do?" I asked him even kowing that he wouldn't understand. "We were playing too hard. We broke the vase, sorry. Let me clean it up. Are you shocked, Willow?" Lucas appeared in the kitchen in no time. He looks devilishly handsome in white polo shirt while holding Willow's favorite ball. As soon as he saw Lucas, Willow came running back to him. They are so chaotic together. I gave Lucas an annoyed look when he threw the ball near the cabinet where wine glasses are carefully arranged. Willow followed the ball and almost jumped into the cabinet but gladly the ball bounced and rolled to the wall. "Too bad. Looks like we need playroom for our baby. I will request Red to design it." He has no idea how his words made me feel butterfly in the stomach. He just called Willow our baby. I turned around so he won't see my blushing face. Willow jumped back to him as if handing the ball. It's late at night yet they still have so much energy. "Willow, come here." I called him. "Please clean the broken vase first. Make sure you don't hurt yourself. Don't call Willow while you're cleaning, he might stepped on the broken pieces." He saluted to me and did exactly what I instructed. It's my first time seeing this cute side of him, it melts my heart. We had a quiet dinner. Our conversation is typically just about each other's day, what happened and who annoyed us the most at work. It's like we are in the getting-to-know-each-other phase, but we're married and living under one roof. My parents went on a Europe trip, and they will be away for 2 months. They rarely book vacations lasting that long because they are obsessed with work, but it's nice that they're finally realizing the importance of it now. "Any plans this weekend?" He asked after our dinner. He's looking for something sweet in the fridge. No matter how long I stare at him, I will never stop admiring his perfect built. He's tall and has a perfect frame. "I'm spending the weekend at our hacienda in the countryside. I'll be back on Monday morning. Willow's caretaker will take him to Thunder. He's missing him." "I see. Would you like me to take you there? I have no plans this weekend." I watched him walked back to the dining table with his sliced watermelon. I appreciate him trying to get close to me and break the ice between us. I can feel that he's trying to slowly cross the boundary I set, but it's me who is not yet ready. He texts me good night each night when we're back in our rooms after dinner. He says weird stuffs that make me blush, but I enjoy how playful he is. I would be mad if he's not trying at all. "It's okay. I can manage. I also need some quiet time after the big event last week." He nodded and placed the plate of watermelon near me as if asking if I want to have some. "I already brushed my teeth." He pouted and continued to take bites on his watermelon. I take pictures of him, and he's aware. He even tried to fix his posture. "Call me anytime you're bored. I'll follow you there." He said. "You should do something else. I heard you love golfing and fishing." "Yeah. But these days I want to focus on you and us. I don't want this to be pure business between us." His eyes and voice suddenly became serious. I avoided his gaze and fake a cough. "But I don't want to force anything to you, Naomi. I won't demand your time or attention. What you're giving me now is enough. We can keep doing this. I only asked for one thing in our agreement before marriage, right? I'll be fine if you have other things that you need to do, I will always be here to support you." My heart skipped a beat remembering what he wrote in the agreement. There was literally one thing he asked me. No third party in our marriage. "Y-yeah. I agree we can take this slow, right?" When I looked at him again, I saw that he's still intently looking at me. "Sure we do. Have a lovely weekend, and I'll see you on Monday then?" He placed the plate on the sink. "You too. Hope you get to rest this weekend." He texted me good night 10 minutes after we got back to our room. I was there smiling from ear to ear while staring at my phone. Hacienda is my paradise. This is my safest place. I know every employee here. I get teary eyes when I found out that they prepared a little surprise to congratulate me in my wedding. They prepared my favorite dishes and there's a cake with a very simple design with a greeting. Brent arrived while we are having lunch. He joined us and started asking how my married life is going. He's my childhood bestfriend, and he was also present in the wedding, but he didn't like Lucas. I just feel that they have different vibes. We went for a walk after eating. We came across the farmers harvesting coconuts, and they handed one to each of us. Brent and I basically grew up together, he knows how to open a coconut. This is basic to him. He opened one for each of us including the farmers around us, but I had to decline because I felt bloated. We had a little chat with them before we continued walking. The air here at 2 PM is refreshing. Nothing can compare to the feeling of being surrounded by trees and people I trust the most. This is where I want to retire at 40. "You know that it hasn't been a year since he broke up with Amery, right?" I gave him a sharp look at the mention of his ex. "I really don't want any negativity right now. I have a lot of things going on at work. I came here to restore my peace of mind." I said, but he just took a deep sigh. "We've been friends all our lives, and you know that we can be honest with each other every time. Of all the decisions you made, your marriage is the only one that disappointed me." Okay, but that hurts. He asked me to sit at the nearest bench. He's like a brother to me, but more than that. He's my soulmate and adviser in life. I listen well to him because I trust him more than I trust my brothers. He's someone I grew with and he just made me feel valid in every era we had gone through. Hearing that he's disappointed in me is a different kind of pain. "Well, I'll show you that this is not so bad." I answered, but didn't mean to make it lifeless. "I think you deserve to know this." "What?" He stirred up unwanted emotions. "That girl is shading you in her last contents." I cleared my throat. I'm positive he's talking about Amery. I purposely stopped watching her contents in all social media when I agreed to the wedding. She might be bitter that Lucas got married 6 months after their breakup. Afterall, they were together for almost 7 years. "That's cheap." I simply answered. "I know, but that will put you at a disadvantage. Her videos are getting more engagement because people can relate to her sentiments. There are pictures of your wedding surfacing the internet and being associated to her contents. She's playing the victim now, and earning money from it." It makes me mad. I never liked her for Lucas. She's low class, rude, and manipulative. But it's slowly getting to my head. She wants me to appear as the villain because the entire Stallion University acknowledged her and Lucas as long-time lovers. She had a lot of contents with Lucas too, their travel with friends, their hobbies, their pranks with each other. It would be easy for her to make me appear as the antagonist in their story. "This is not something that I want to discuss with Lucas now." "So you're just going to let her tamper your name?" "Won't this escalate if I file legal charges? And... won't this make me look like I'm trying to prove a point or fighting back? You know that I really don't like her." "You're the only one getting dragged because Lucas still has their pictures together in all his social media accounts. You can file legal charges against people using your pictures for malicious purposes without your consent, but Amery has never mentioned your name nor Lucas', so no charges can be filed yet against her." My eyes rolled on their own. I can never stand that woman. "So what should I do?" I asked pathetically after a long silence between us. "It should be Lucas taking action. What is he even doing?" "You think he's still watching her contents?" I asked back. "His secretaries and legal representatives should be aware how Amery is making an issue about his marriage. He's one of the most powerful people in the country. I won't believe that he doesn't know his ex is going around making fun of him and you. Discuss this with him and see how he can take action on Amery's nonstop yapping." I have no idea I have taken a deep sigh. I came here to relax, but this news made me feel anxious. "Thanks for telling me, Brent." I said to close the topic. "Let's enjoy the weekend here and get by with our miserable life on Monday. I will be in the city to attend a family event, so I'll drive you to your house." I gave him a tight hug. "Thanks." He hugged me back and we stayed like that for some minutes. He's really my comfort. I felt so much better after that. He helped me forget about my worries that weekend. We raced and he still can't beat me and my horse, Clavy. We helped in harvesting pineapples the next day, we came visit the paddy field running hectares. There were some kids playing kites around, what a relief that place remains alive after all these years. We had lunch and dinner with the employees. This our therapy.
