Waking up, it was just another day, like every day. My life was great! My name is Kinley Michaels, I'm 16 and live on the outskirts in a quaint little town close to a bustling and thriving city, in Oklahoma, I'm 5'4" and I am the second child to my parents, Emma Jean and Jacob Michaels. My brother's name is Nate,. My parents own a large Ranch. You can say I'm a tad bit country but not in a hick sorta way.
I like to go shopping. with my friends just as every other teenager but I'm all about cooking, horse riding, 4 wheeling and hard work as well. My parents have been out of state with my brother since the beginning of the summer, going to rodeos.
Nate is 17 and has been a bull rider, competing in countless rodeos since he was real young and able. I've been left in the care of my pa's best friend and head of the ranch, Uncle joe, so I wouldn't have to travel most of the summer and watch those endless rodeos when I've been to literally hundreds already. I just wanted one summer to hang out with my friends and be myself.
Don't get me wrong, I've still had to help tend to the animals and keep the pens clean. My parents wouldn't have left me without some type of work for me. Hard work without discipline is no work at all. That's what my pa always says.
But mostly its uncle joe and the ranch hands to oversee everything while pa is away.
I get up and out of my bed and head straight to the bathroom, I brush my teeth while waiting for my shower to heat up.
When I finish I get dressed in just a tank and shorts and of course my boots. I brush my long auburn hair and moisturize my light tanned skin. I wouldn't say I'm on the chunky side but I'm definitely not no tooth pick.
I head downstairs to get some breakfast and get my day started. The first person I notice is Uncle Joe, pouring himself a cup of coffee.
" Mornin lil bit. " He says to me while I pour myself some cocoa pebbles.
" Morning Uncle Joe! " I respond
" Gettin up a lil late today, dontcha think? " He smirks behind his graying mustache and beard.
" I know I know, I was spose to feed and water before dawn. I didnt realize how late it was last night before going to bed. I promise that will be the first thing I do after I eat my pebbles and it won't happen again. " I replied shamelessly.
" Stayed up late in the horse pen reading again kiddo? " He asked while taking a drink.
" guilty. " I said with a mouthful of cereal.
" Well, you know your parents and brother come home today? "
That got me excited, I hadn't seen them in 2 months and missed them dearly.
" Of course Uncle Joe. after feedin, I planned to go to the market and pick up some stuff to go with dinner and dessert. "
Nate got 1st place in two of his rodeos and said he was bringing me something back so I of course I wanted to make his favorite, Steak, fried tators and ma's famous Mac n cheese with some homemade biscuits.
" Ya cooking your famous steaks tonight? " He asked.
" You know it! " I responded " And before you ask. I planned on saving you some too. "
" Well in that case, I already did the feedin for ya and finished the other morning chores while Randy and the men tended to the herd and whatnot. and don't worry. long as I get one of them steaks, we can keep this between us this time" He smirked.
I squealed in excitement. and jumped up giving Uncle Joe a hug. "thank ya unc! now I have more time to go shopping with Beth and Sarah too. I won't be out to late. " I said to him while I put up my bowl and rinsed it out before putting it in the dishwasher.
He chuckled as I grabbed my keys and ran out the door.
It was a few hours later and I had just dropped off my friends. we had gotten some outfits and already went to the market and I was heading home to prepare for my families coming home dinner.
I had about two hours before they made it home, which was plenty of time to get everything ready.
As soon as I pulled up I noticed that the sheriff and a few deputies were outside talking to Uncle Joe, I'm wondering if someone was caught trespassing again. so I thought nothing of it, until Uncle Joe turned around and looked towards me pulling up and realized it was something serious the way he looked so heartbroken.
I then realized that the men that worked on our ranch was gathered around and some had their heads down and some looked almost.... broken?
I got out of my car and cautiously approached sheriff Mann's and Uncle Joe.
I don't think anyone could ever be ready to experience what I felt next.
" Kinley, How are you doin hun? " Sheriff Mann's asked me.
" Uh. I'm fine sheriff, Is something wrong? " I replied uneasily.
" Maybe we should have a seat. " He said and I just knew at that moment that whatever he was going to say, definitely wasn't good.
" I'll stand, sir. " I said waiting to hear the news.
He looked at Uncle Joe then back towards me. I knew that whatever he was about to say, wasn't going to be easy for him to do so.
" I um, I gotta call bout an hour ago from the highway patrol. There's been a wreck hun. ya momma, Daddy and brother were heading home, when a car hit them head on. Your brother appeared to be laying in the back seat, " Everything he said at this point became distorted.
I cut him off with " Are they okay?, Why didn't they call me? Are they at the hospital? I can go there now and bring them home! " I frantically said and was about to take off towards my car but then uncle Joe grabbed my hand. It was then I realized that his eyes were puffy and red.
I started to tear up, not wanting the sheriff to finish what he started to say.
" Lil bit, Uncle Joe said. I shook my head, dreading what he was about to tell me, Tears welled up in my eyes at that moment. " They can't come home no more. " Uncle joe finished for the sheriff.
My heart was pounding and I felt as if all the air went dry and I could no longer breathe. I heard screaming as I fell to the ground. Or was that just me? I didn't know anymore.
My heart hurt, my head hurt. I didn't want to believe what the sheriff and Uncle Joe were saying, but by the looks of everyone breaking down around me. I knew for a fact that they were gone. I was now an orphan.
