After the news of my family dying, the days seemed to blend together. I hardly ate and the little sleep I did get I woke up screaming from my nightmares. I didn't want to talk to anyone. I didn't want to do anything. Uncle Joe has been my rock, he's been there for me through everything. He was so patient and caring. He handled all of the funeral arrangements.
I found out that the police can't determine if my parents and brother's death was an accident or on purpose. The guy who hit them head on disappeared before police got there and the vehicle he was driving was stolen. so no leads on that. There were few passerbys that stopped to give any description of the accident.
It's been 3 days since their deaths and we had received their belongings from the sheriff. Uncle Joe didn't think that I should go through it just yet but I just had to. I found what Nate wanted to bring back for me. It was a gold plated charm bracelet, with different charms of everywhere he has traveled throughout the country. I broke down even more.
It was currently 4 pm when Uncle Joe and I were sitting in the living room, grieving. he paid the ranch hands and sent them on their way home. him and Randy have been tending to the ranch.
We heard a car pull up and Uncle joe got up to greet them. it's probably another neighbor from town to give their regards and drop off another damn casserole.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not ungrateful or anything and I really appreciate and love my town for sending their condolences. but how many casseroles can one household have?
A few minutes later, Uncle Joe came back in and was escorting in a man and woman that I've never met. The man was dressed in a button up and some slacks and the women was in a pants suit.
" Kinley, This is Your parents attorney, Mr Davis and this is Ms. Palmer from children's services. They both would like to talk with you" He introduced them.
I just gave them each a tight nod. and everyone sat down.
Mr. Davis spoke first in this awkward moment. " Ms. Palmer. Would you like to go first? " she asked the lady.
" No, no no. " Ms. Palmer replied. " You were hear first so why don't you go. " I just stared at them both silently wishing they would just hurry up and say what they had to say and be gone.
After a moment of silence, Mr. Davis cleared his throat and spoke. " Ms. Kinley. As this gentleman said my name is Anthony Davis, I know you may not remember me but I actually grew up with and graduated with your father. He was actually my first client when I became an attorney. "
I just stared at him, waiting for him to get to the point. Mr. Davis was tall and lankey, he said he graduated with my pa, so he had to be nearing 47, give or take a year. He had short broke hair and kind eyes.
" I um. I'm really sorry to hear about your family. " He said.
I finally spoke " Thank you Mr. Davis but why are you here? " I questioned.
" Ms. Kinley I'm here about your families will and estate. As your families attorney. I came to discuss the details that your mother and father had written and signed in the event of their passing. They stated that the entirety of everything they owned would be passed down to their children, and sadly since your brother is no longer with us then everything will go to you. I understand that this is not something one wants to hear, especially with you being so young. but this being your families ranch and you being underage, I have to ask. Is there someone you trust to handle the ranch until you become 18? "
Without hesitation I looked towards Uncle Joe. " Uncle Joe can make all the decisions. "
Mr. Davis wrote that down then said. " Now, your families accounts are separate from the ranch account. so you won't be able to gain access to that trust fund, plus the life insurance until you are 18 and it totals out to 4.7 million dollars. But we can put in an allowance for you to receive monthly for expenses out of that. which is a stipulation your parents set up, specifically in this type of case with you being underage. and they also have a financial advisor to help Joe oversee the ranches financial information, pay bills, keep the ranch afloat etc. until you say otherwise and then everything will be transferred to your name. and that is pretty much everything, do either of you have any questions for me? "
I know I should have been shocked at this point, but honestly I just didn't care. I love my families ranch but if I had to choose between that with the money. I'd just rather give it all up just to have them back.
Instead of saying anything I just shook my head and then looked towards Uncle joe. He spoke immediately after. " Apologies Mr. Davis but we are both still mourning. If we can think of anything then we can just ring you at a later date. " Mr. Davis agreed to that and handed his card letting me know that once again he's my attorney now too, if I do choose to keep him on.
It finally came time for Ms. Palmer to speak. and I can tell I wasn't going to like what she had to say either.
" Kinley, My name is Danielle Palmer. as stated before. I am with children's services. I have to ask. You being 16, other then your mother's sister, do you have any other relatives close by? "
I stared blankly at her. Since when does my mom have a sister? I've never heard of her...
" I have Joe. " I finally said.
" Well. that may be a problem. with you being underage. You can't stay here without a relative or guardian. your uh Joe here. has had a couple of criminal charges and we at the department of children and families services feel as if you should be with a loving family. We have gotten in touch with your aunt Pamela And she has agreed to take you in until your 18th birthday or when you decide to leave after that. "
" OH HORSE s**t!! " Uncle Joe stood up, yelling in rage. " Those charges were over 20 years ago and had been dropped. we was just boys being boys and went cow tipping. She doesn't know anything about Pamela and the worst mistake you can do is send her there.! "
I had heard about that night multiple times from dad and uncle joe. Nate and I use to laugh every time they told us the story.
Dad and uncle joe got drunk the night before him and momma's wedding and somehow ended up streaking and trespassed on old man Mooney's property. they were caught by the police trying to tip over the cows and were arrested for trespassing and public nudity. The judge did eventually drop the charges and charged them a hefty fine. but momma was furious thinking that he had stood her up at the altar the next day. Pa was over two hours late to his own wedding. and they almost didn't marry.
" I'm sorry sir, but according to our policy, it's in the child's best interest to stay with living relative. "
