It's the middle of August and tomorrow, I start my sophomore year in a new school, surrounded by new people, in a new state.
I've been living at my aunt and uncle's for just about 3 weeks now and Deena and Larissa showed their true colors almost immediately. While Dino and Pamela were at least cordial for the first week.
When they realized that the case worker wasn't going to make regular weekly visits as promised then I have come to know their REAL intentions as well.
They just want the money, which got sent by mail, but I wasn't expecting any less. Luckily Ms. Palmer was smart enough to hand off my card and bank information for my weekly allowance before we left Oklahoma. The case workers down here apparently didn't have the time to make a stop to check in every time. But they did call to schedule an a visit. How nice.
I have been assigned chores in this house which I didn't mind at first but it seems that I, apparently am the only one who does the chores and now they want me to cook for them? yea. Not happening! I refuse to be anyone's slave. Not that they don't try though.
" KINLEY!! " I hear hear screaming coming from the kitchen.
I roll my eyes, dreading what they want now and make my way out of my closet.
" Yes? " I ask as I stand in the entrance to the kitchen. Dino is sitting at the table with Deena and Larissa, While Pamela is standing at the counter with her arms folded, giving me a look to let me know she's not happy.
" Where is our dinner girl? Can't you do anything right? " Dino sneers.
I fold my arms across my chest and say, " If you wanted dinner then why don't you make some? I already ate when I went to go get my school supplies earlier. "
" HOW DARE YOU? " Pamela then shrieks. " We have rules in this house and if you want to continue staying here then you will obey them. "
" Funny, Those rules only seem to apply to me. I wonder how y'all lived before I came. You're not royalty and I am not your servant. If you don't want me here then I'll gladly be on my way back to Oklahoma! "
I was tired of being here. who TF do they think they are you treat anyone this way. Its despicable.
Pamela walked towards me and I don't know if I was expecting it or just shocked that she did it but pain seemed across my cheek when I realized that she smacked me.!
" Now you listen to me! I can call that case worker right now and let them know that you are violent and disrespectful towards us if you don't do as you are told. The only place you would be going is to the system for those unwanted bastards. It'll be our word against yours. Do you really want to try those odds? "
I honestly didn't, who would believe me, besides uncle Joe. The odds were four against one. I had to finish school in order to gain access to my family's estate and my trust fund. I didn't want to do that in a group home. I somehow doubt it would be any better than being here. I mean it's just two years right? How bad could it be? I can take this with a grain of salt and in 2 years I will be 18 and if I can keep my grades up, I can see about graduating early. The earlier I can go home, the better.
" Get out of my sight. The next time I expect you to do better, is that understood? ! " Pamela sneered, I then gave her a tight nod and rushed back to my closet of a room.
I haven't cried since a month ago. no matter how much I felt I wanted to. Not even a single tear would fall from my eyes.
I drifted off to sleep. I hope tomorrow can be better.

The next morning I was up, ready and running out of the door before anyone else got up. I didn't want to deal with them this early. I'm so glad I had the GPS on my phone to navigate where I was going. As I walked past a little diner. The aroma coming from the place made my belly rumble.
I still had 30 minutes before having to be at the school so I stepped in for a quick bite.
It was bustling with customers. It looked like I had stepped into the eighties. The colors of the walls were striped in red and white, they had red pleather booths that looked worn and red stools at the counter and off to the side I noticed an old juke box. Hmm cute, I thought to myself. Just then a little old lady who couldn't be older than 50, zipped past me with a tray of food.
" Hey Hun, sit anywhere you'd like. " She called out to me as she was serving some customers to my right.
I walked up to the booth and looked at the menu sitting to the side. I doubt I had enough time to sit for an entire breakfast so when the lady stood in front of me, asking what I would like. I just told her a blueberry muffin and an orange juice to go.
She bagged up the muffin and poured my juice.
" I haven't seen you around here before suga. " She said to me.
" Um yea. I just moved here from Oklahoma. " I replied.
" Oh you're from my neck of the woods! " She exclaimed. " Names Ginger. "
I smiled at her. I can already tell that she's a kind soul. It's just the vibe she portrays.
" I'm kinley, it's nice to meet ya.! So you're from Oklahoma as well? " I enquired.
" Well, of sorts. " She replied. " Born and raised in Lubbock Texas. "
" I've been there before for my brother's bull riding competition. " It slipped out of my mouth before I could comprehend it and just the thought of my brother left a pang in my heart. I swirled the bracelet on my wrist. I haven't taken it off since I found it.
" You a rancher? " Ginger asked
" Use to be. " I replied knowing that I'm stuck here for the next couple of years. Then I had an idea. " Ginger are you looking for any help around here? "
She stopped to look at me and asked, " How old are ya suga? "
" 16 " I answered.
" Ya ever done any waitressing? " I shook my head slightly. " I grew up on my family's ranch. But I do know all about hard work and I'm willing to learn" I said.
" Hm. Come on by after school tomorrow. I may have something for ya. "
We said our goodbyes and I headed a block away to school.
