Chapter One
(Evie’s POV) “Mommy.” The soft voice pulled me from my thoughts. I turned, and there he was , Dominic, standing in the doorway with his messy brown curls sticking in every direction. His brown golden eyes, exactly the same shade that haunted my dreams ,blinked at me sleepily. My heart softened instantly. “You’re up early, sweetheart.” He padded toward me, dragging his stuffed lion by the tail. “The sun woke me.” I smiled and reached for him, lifting him onto my lap. His little hands wrapped around my fingers as if afraid I might disappear if he let go. Sometimes, I wondered if that fear came from me because I still carried it too. Six years. That’s how long it had been since that night. Since my best friend betrayed me, since my life split into before and after. I didn’t talk about it. Not to my father. Not to anyone. The only reminder of that night sat here in my arms — innocent, beautiful, and blameless. I brushed a kiss against Dominic’s forehead. “How about pancakes before school?” He nodded eagerly, the shadows in my mind retreating just a little. By seven, the Welse household was alive in its quiet, orderly way. Staff moved like shadows, their words hushed, their steps practiced. My mother, always poised in her tailored silk robe, sipped her tea while scanning stock reports. Father sat opposite her at the breakfast table, the morning paper folded neatly beside his untouched omelet. “Good morning,” I greeted as Dominic and I entered. My mother’s eyes flicked up briefly. “Evie.” Her gaze shifted to Dominic. “Good morning, dear.” Father didn’t look up. “You’re taking him to school again?” “Yes.” “You have a board meeting at ten.” His tone carried no accusation actually, just that cool Welse efficiency. “Try not to be late again.” I resisted the urge to sigh. “I won’t.” Dominic climbed into his chair beside me, swinging his legs under the table. He greeted the butler with a cheerful “Good morning, Mr. Thomas!” — the only one at the table capable of pure warmth. My parents weren’t cruel, not exactly. They were simply, well,… Welses. People who’d built empires and measured affection in legacies, not embraces. After breakfast, I drove Dominic to his private school myself, ignoring my father’s usual comment that “chauffeurs exist for a reason.” He never understood that those twenty minutes alone with my son were the most peaceful of my day. “Will you come for the parent event next week?” Dominic asked, peering up from his drawing pad. “Of course,” I smiled. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He grinned, satisfied, and returned to sketching something that looked suspiciously like a drawing of a lion. When I dropped him off, he kissed my cheek and whispered, “Love you, Mommy.” “Love you more,” I whispered back, watching him run off, his laughter echoing down the hall — a sound that kept me alive. --- By nine, I was in my office at Welse Enterprises, the heart of my father’s empire. As the only daughter, I wasn’t expected to lead, just to look polished enough to grace the press photos. But I insisted on working because I’d earned my degree, my MBA, my right to stand in these glass halls. My assistant, Laura, handed me the morning schedule. “You have a meeting with the design team at ten, then a call with the charity board at one.” “Thank you,” I said, scanning the file. “And the new marketing proposal?” “Already on your desk.” I smiled faintly. “Perfect, Laura.” I buried myself in work. It was the one thing that silenced the noise , the whispers of society, the pitying looks, the rumors that followed me since Dominic’s birth. If only I was married before having this child or if only I knew who is the father that way the looks I get will mean nothing to me. By afternoon, my father’s secretary summoned me to the top floor which is exactly his floor. I smoothed my skirt and entered the office. “Father?” He didn’t look up immediately. “Sit down, Evie.” That tone. Calm, controlled, dangerous. I supposed to start getting used to it but I guess fear still grips me at my last. He folded his hands over a folder embossed with a gold seal. “We need to talk about your future.” And just like that, the peace I’d built around myself began to tremble. Future? What about the future, dad? I already have my life set up and I don't think I am willing to start a future with another complete stranger in my life or be with someone who will despise my child because he is not the father. Dad please reconsider every decision you have made , please. “Evie, “ he shouted, his voice firm and cold. If you hadn't let yourself out do you think this child would be born ? Just because I let you bring this child into the world gives you no right to question my decision for this family because you have done enough with one mistake and almost tarnish my reputation. You can leave my office now. But dad, this is not fair . I have a life to live too. As I said, leave my office now. I knew I had no say anymore.
