9 MAGIC KOOL AID We continue learning about one another while we eat. I lean back, too sated and happy to bother with cleaning up yet. Jo turns to me and I face her. She is studying me again which makes me a little nervous. “Libby, you are my girlfriend, non?” I like the sound of that. “Yes, I guess I am.” “Can you accept that I am the kind of woman who wants to care for, to protect, my girlfriend?” Her wording sets off a faint warning bell. “Ah, yes.” I pause, wondering where this is going, weighing the value of honesty versus self-protection. “I appreciate it.” Jo smiles and squeezes my hands.
