Chapter 4 Though it’s only a little after nine when Jacob gets back to his room, he thinks Mike is already asleep. The lights are out, all except for the small lamp clipped above Jacob’s bed. That one shines at the spot where his bed meets the wall. It brightens the wall, the bed sheets, and casts deep shadows around the rest of the room. Mike lies on his bed, rolled onto his side, facing Jacob’s bed, and he doesn’t move when Jacob comes in. Jacob closes the door behind him as quietly as he can.
