After classes are over, they go to Avery’s room first. Jacob thinks there’s no use hurrying, they have all night together, but he’s nervous and giddy and can’t stop thinking about what that unassuming box of condoms means.
He’s not surprised to find Timmy already in the room. Jacob lies down on Avery’s bed and stares at the ceiling so he won’t have to say anything to him. He thinks if he talks, his words will tumble out in a meaningless rush and Timmy will know they’re going to do it tonight. Tonight! He can’t wait.
“Jacob’s roommate is gone for the weekend,” Avery says. Jacob watches him fold a change of clothes into his book bag. “His grandfather died.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Timmy says, sounding anything but. He glances over his shoulder. “Where are you going?”
