Marie lets them out at the gate. The buildings of St. Thomas Aquinas are back off the road, and rolling green hills stretch between the gatehouse and the church. The dorms and school building aren’t even visible from the car. They watch her drive off, then head for the school. Dread curls in Jacob’s stomach as they near the gatehouse, but the uniformed guard doesn’t even look up from his paper when they pass by. “See?” Avery whispers. Around them, the school is quiet. They could be the only ones awake at this hour, even though it’s almost ten in the morning, but Jacob knows they’re not. Everyone else is probably in mass. “I told you not to worry.” Jacob laughs at that. He shoves his hands into his pockets because he wants to touch Avery again and can’t. Or rather, shouldn’t.
