Angel
“A woman should endure all of her husband’s decisions. That is her purpose, and that is what proves her femininity.”
Hearing my husband of half a decade say those words to me on the night of our fifth mating anniversary, I couldn't bring myself to believe that he truly was the one who had just said them.
“Cally…?” I whispered, unable to finish the words that had hooked themselves in my throat.
“Alpha Cally,” he corrected, just like he always did, despite us being mates for five years.
“The next time you call me by my name, I will see to it that you are punished according to pack rules,” he added.
I stared at him in confusion, unable to understand his sudden annoyance towards me tonight.
Cally hated me. As far as I knew, that was the one thing I had always been certain of about him and our marriage of five years.
He hated that the contract between our families had bound the two of us together.
“Why do you keep treating me this way?” I questioned, finding my voice again after a brief moment of silence.
“Do you really hate me and this marriage that much? To the extent that you never want to have anything to do with me? To the extent that you wouldn't even touch me?” I forced out.
Five years had passed, and he had never touched me once.
Five years of remaining a virgin, just the way I had been when I was handed over to him in a mating ceremony at nineteen, for the future of my father's pack and for the safety of our people.
“You disgust me, Angel. How many times do I have to repeat those words to you?” he suddenly snapped.
“The mere sight of you makes my skin crawl. Leaving you alive until now, even though you're the cause of Genevieve's death, should be enough mercy for you,” he said coldly.
A tear fell from the corner of my eye.
Genevieve.
That name was awfully too familiar to me, one I couldn't forget no matter how hard I tried.
Five years ago, after the peace treaty was signed and it was announced across the packs that we would be mated to each other in order to ensure peace, Genevieve, who had been Cally's childhood lover, had left his pack.
I thought she was sulking.
I loved Cally. Yes, I had seen him once when I followed my father to war, and I had fallen in love with him from then.
That was why I had accepted the marriage without complaining, believing that it would bring me closer to the man I loved, believing that it would make him fall for me as well.
I never knew about Genevieve until she ran from the pack, and I found out that she had been his lover.
A maidservant's daughter who had grown beside him, but the two of them had been refused marriage by Cally's father because of her lowly birth.
“Is she also the reason why you've never touched me all these years?”
Cally said nothing, still staring at the other side of the bed as if he wasn't the one I was speaking to.
I didn't complain. After all, I had put up with this behavior of his for years because I loved him and hoped that he would change.
“The pack spreads rumours about me being barren. They say that I am cursed, Cally,” I said between tears, praying silently that the Moon Goddess would touch his heart, even if it was only for once.
“But how can I tell them that I'm not the one at fault? How can I let them know that for five years, my own mate has never even touched me?”
“That’s your own business, Angel. If they decide to burn you at the stake tomorrow for bringing an end to the line of the pack’s future, that would be what you deserve.”
I opened my lips to speak, but he continued before I could even find the words.
“Genevieve died because of you. The hatred from the pack is even enough mercy at this point for you,” he added.
“You know I never killed her. This marriage was forced on me too by the council. You can’t take it out on me as if I was the one who forced you into it, or the one who asked Genevieve to leave and got her attacked by those rogues!” I shouted, unable to hold it in anymore.
I had always been patient with him. I had even taken the blame for our barrenness because I didn't want the pack questioning his ability to sire children.
But sitting there and having him blame me for Genevieve’s death was something I wasn't going to take.
She had left the pack of her own accord. She had even stolen from the pack’s treasury before she left, but he never cared about any of that, nor about the evidence of her theft that had been found at the scene of her accident after she was attacked and ravaged by rogue wolves.
I had swallowed every humiliation he threw my way because he blamed all of it on me.
“Isn’t my patience all these years enough already, Cally? Haven’t you punished me enough for a crime I didn’t even commit and had no hand in?” I whispered, my voice lower this time as I hoped he would finally see reason.
“Today is our anniversary, Cally,” I continued, my hand reaching for the lace hem of the sexy lingerie I was wearing as I tried to seduce him, desperately hoping that this time he would desire me, even if it was only for a short while.
“For the sake of your mark on my neck and the fact that this is an alliance between both our packs…” I added as the lingerie fell from my body, leaving me completely exposed before him.
I waited.
Two minutes passed, and I thought I had succeeded in moving him, in making him desire me, even if it was only for a brief moment.
“What are you doing?” I protested as I tried to pull my arm away from him, but I couldn't. He used his entire Alpha strength to hold me and drag me by the wrist towards the door.
“You can’t do this, Cally. I am your Luna. At least, let me…” I didn't finish before he pushed me out of the room.
My lingerie was thrown at me moments later.
“Luna…” a voice called from the side, and I rushed to grab the lingerie to cover my nakedness.
In all the years of my wishful daydreaming, not once had I imagined myself being thrown out naked into the open hallway of the pack by my own mate on the night of our fifth anniversary.
Nor had I ever thought that my entire marriage would be filled with humiliation, just like the one I had endured for years at Cally’s hands.
