I watched Lisa speak in the meeting room, and desire stirred in me.
It was a sight that managed to strike right at me.
The way she talked. So much authority in her tone. No nervousness. Or uncertainty.
She talked like she knew she owned the meeting. Like the ruler.
That was one of the sexiest things I'd ever had to watch.
It made it hard to keep this official. I knew I had to respect her boundaries and all that, but heck, seeing how beautiful she looked… I had to hold back countless times from pointing that out.
Then suddenly she went silent, and excused herself.
It was confusing, but I used that as an opportunity to clear my head.
I left the meeting room to the elevator that moved me to the first floor.
My plan was to leave the company for a while, when a voice came, unsure, but sweet.
“You're the man from the zoo.” That familiar voice from behind made me pause.
Slowly, I turned and there the little girl was. Imogen.
Ever since my encounter with her at the zoo, that feeling lingered. The warmth that came with talking to her.
Finn hadn't been able to gather much information about her, which only piqued my interest, because tell me why Rachel kept the birth and life of her daughter a secret, but posted on the internet when she had her son.
It was just too suspicious to ignore.
I didn't want to get my hopes too high, because this little angel here might likely not be mine.
That was easier said than done. As I lifted her in my arms that afternoon, I felt the connection.
It could have been my imagination, but I did feel something.
My heart filling, and a small smile touched my lips in response.
“What's wrong, little one?” I asked softly. “Are you lost again?”
She shook her head. “No, I'm not looking for my mummy.”
“So what are you doing standing here alone? With no escort at that.”
She shrugged. “I don't know. Irea and a big man were following me, but she suddenly ran away, so it was only the big man with me.”
“Where is this big man now?”
“He left too. A woman walked past him and he said ‘Dammmn’ then followed her. He didn't even look back at me.”
It was hard for my smile to not widen. “What?” That was so incompetent, but funny at the same time.
“It's not safe for you to be alone, I'll take you back to your… aunt.” It didn't sound right calling Lisa her aunty, but I wasn't going to confuse the girl if what Rachel had said was true.
“My aunty is…” She trailed off the moment Lisa rushed over.
Where did she even come from?
“What's going on here?”
Imogen grinned. “Hi mu—”
“That’s enough!” Lisa suddenly cut her off, voice so loud, it startled a flinch from Imogen, while I frowned.
She really didn't have to scream.
Lisa took Imogen from me, then set her down, holding her hand.
Her shoulders were straight. Too straight, like she was trying to hide an internal emotion.
“What's wrong?” I had to ask.
“Nothing.” She just started to walk away.
When I followed, I noticed how her jaw clenched.
She looked like she was holding in a lot of breath, while Imogen was clearly as confused as I was.
Especially when she stopped to stare at me, her grip tightening around Imogen's hand. “Why are you following?”
“What?” I frowned.
“Will you tell me why on earth you're following me? That is so unprofessional, you know? And if I remember, you have made it clear that you'll keep on with the formality you already began with, so why did you choose now to stop.” The words just rushed out of her mouth, too fast and too sharp for the situation.
For a second, I didn't say anything, eyes studying her. “We have a meeting to continue, did you forget?”
Her blink was enough to confirm that she had, indeed, forgotten.
How was that even possible?
“The meeting is adjourned for now. We'll continue our discussion tomorrow and finalize everything by then.” That was all, before she walked away.
I stood there for a long moment, wondering what just happened.
Was it because of Imogen? Because I'd been with her?
But why would that bother Lisa? Even if it did, it shouldn't be this much, right?
I didn't have an answer, but I couldn't shake the feeling that this child mattered more than she should…
