“You think you can watch Imogen for me tomorrow?” I asked Leo over the phone that Tuesday night.
“Why? What did you do?”
I rolled my eyes, though he wouldn't see it. “Drex and Erica are coming over again tomorrow and I can't risk him seeing Imogen.” That had happened once, I wasn't going to let it repeat itself.
“Geez, I'd love to stay with that little troublemaker all day.”
The way he said it made my brows pull. “But?”
“But I have to pay my parents a visit, and you know how frustrating going to their retirement home is, imagine how worse bringing a child would be for me. And even Imogen.” I was sure he was shaking his head. “That will traumatize her till forever.”
He was right.
I'd gone to his parents' retirement home once, and it wasn't a sight I planned on revisiting again.
Which was why I sighed. “So what do I do with Imogen? Rachel is also not available.”
As it was, my meeting with Drex and Erica was from 2 p.m. to 3:45, and Irea would have picked her from school.
“Get a babysitter.”
I frowned. “You know I don't trust those people.”
I didn't trust anyone with my child while in New York, what on earth would make me do that here in California. A place that housed my enemies.
“You overreact sometimes, you know.” He was chewing something now. “If you don't want to leave her with a sitter, then don't pick her up from school until the meeting is over. Problem solved.”
“I'm starting to think you're not making sense on purpose.” My words were followed by a loud laugh from his side.
“You asked the wrong person for help.*
It made my lips purse. “Oh get lost, you weirdo.”
With that, I hung up, then leaned back against my bed's headboard.
I would have to figure out a way to make this work.
That was all I could think about till sleep took over.
When I woke up the next morning, I started my usual morning routine, bathed and brushed, then dressed in something splendid for the day, before heading to the kitchen to make breakfast, then packed Imogen's lunch.
After, I went to wake her up, and helped her get ready for school.
After breakfast, I drove her straight to school, gave her a goodbye kiss, before leaving to the company.
Irea greeted me when I reached my office, then she laid me in on my schedule for the day, before we both got to work.
As always, it was just as work filled as every other day.
I hadn't even fully started when four department managers entered with samples of the winter collection.
By noon, I had rejected seven designs, approved four celebrity contracts, and postponed a million dollar launch when I noticed a flaw in the packaging.
Then it was two p.m.
“You'll pick Imogen up, but I don't want you to drop her in my office.” I specifically told Irea. I couldn't risk Imogen being in my office, she'd break everything in it.
“So stay with her and take a guard along, but ensure she doesn't leave your sight. And also that she's not sighted by many.”
“Okay ma'am, but what about taking the minute of the meeting?”
“Get another worker to do it for today.”
“Yes, ma'am.”
That was a smart plan, a very smart one actually.
Which was why I left to the meeting room with a different worker. A male this time.
Drex was there, eyes on me the entire time as I talked.
He still had that professional stance, but I noticed a c***k in his expression.
He watched me with something I wasn't too sure about.
Something that looked like admiration.
I had to shake off the thought, but it refused to leave.
Was he actually admiring me? That would be plain stupid, right?
He had a girlfriend, so he shouldn't.
I drew in a breath when I noticed my throat tightening.
This made no sense.
It really couldn't be happening every dang time he was here.
I knew it was nothing, but it had to stop.
“Are you okay?” Erica's voice snapped me back to reality. It was just then that I realized I'd stopped talking.
“Yes, I'm fine.” I glanced at the clock. 2:34. “Let's go on a five minute break, shall we?”
There was clear confusion on her face, while Drex only raised a brow.
I avoided his gaze, and instead pushed the chair back, stood and was on my way out.
Not till I felt the weight of his gaze sear holes through me from behind.
I didn't turn though, but I was sure his eyes would have been locked on me if I did.
When I left, I didn't stop until I was out of the company.
I needed natural air at the moment.
My initial plan had been to check up on Imogen. She always managed to lighten my mood, but I figured if, by chance, Drex caught me with her, it might raise questions I'm not interested in answering.
I stayed out for a few minutes, before starting towards the company, my thoughts on Imogen and Drex.
It was best to leave things the way they were.
I wasn't even pleased with the idea of her being here while he was, but since I couldn't leave her in school and with Rachel and Leo busy, I couldn't take her there, this was the only sensible solution.
And perhaps, this was a very big company, the chances of the two meeting each other was very slim…
So tell me why I walk into my company to the sight of my daughter in the arms of the last man she should be with.
My entire body went still.
