I listened in silence. "Maisie, I was wrong." He looked up, his eyes red. "You're the one I love. What happened between Serena and me is over. Only after you left did I realize that, over these five years, I hadn't fallen in love with Serena's shadow. I had fallen in love with you. I was foolish. I couldn't let go of the past, and I couldn't understand my own feelings. But I'm begging you—give me one more chance." He stepped forward, reaching for my hand. I stepped back. "Adrian," I said, "if you had truly loved me, even a little, you never would have deceived me into marrying you." He froze. "You treated me like a fool, and now you expect me to love you?" His face went pale. "And the last time I came to see you—you went to Serena, didn't you? You rushed to tell me we'd talk later
