Chapter One Lucky
I sit in my car my heart pounding in my throat, today is my eighteenth birthday. The day I meet the woman that put me up for adoption eighteen years ago. I swallow hard and take a deep breathe before I open the car door. I have already double checked the address and map a million times so I know I’m in the right place. I walk up a very beautiful sidewalk to a even more beautiful house. I bite my lip could this have been my house? I shake my head to let that thought go and raise my hand to the door knob so many unanswered questions and so much lost time. My hand pauses hovering over the knob my heart pounding so loud the neighbors can probably hear. I can’t help but think of everything my life has been and everything it could have been.
The door swings open, I jump freighted and look into emotionless green eyes. A woman stands in front of me warm brown hair wrapped up in a bun perfectly centered on top of her head a single brown curl twists down pushed behind her ear. I can’t breathe I want to run back to my car and pretend I never begged for this information.
“Lucky,” her voice is surprising warm and kind. “They kept your name that makes me so happy.” She pulls me into a tight hug and lets me go just as quickly. “Please come sit we have much to talk about.”
I follow her speechless deeper into this amazing home. We sit across from one another I bite my lip and wait for her to speak. She studies me carefully nodding to herself as she takes in my short curly brown hair, bright green eyes, and my awkward build.
“Beautiful,” she mummers smiling gently. “Lucky I want to apologize but I can’t and you aren’t going to believe what I am about to say but that’s fine it’s the truth. The reason I had to give you up for adoption across the country is because of your father. He is . . . was the pack leader of the largest pack in this area. He wanted a son so badly he tried to kill you as a baby I had to escape and give you up or he would have hunted us down. But he has recently passed leaving you as his only off spring. The pack is in disarray without someone of alpha blood leading them. They need you, we all need you. We will get you ready promptly and introduced to the pack then shortly after your training starts we shall find you a suitable mate. Then pups we will need pups your father was cursed but I don’t think you are.” She sits back and crosses her legs.
“Wait what?” I sit up and look at her in bewilderment. “I think I would know if I was half animal. I laugh looking around to find an exit to run. “You are crazy that’s why I was giving away like some puppy.”
She frowns and squints her eyes at me “Lucky.” She snaps “Now is not the time to act like this. You haven’t shifted yet because you haven’t awoken your wolf yet. It’s a simple ritual we do on the sixteenth birthday. Something we don’t have time for.” She stands and is immediately at my side I freeze. She grabs my arm hard and growls, I look up to see giant teeth bearing back at me. She sinks her teeth into my arm and I cry out. She steps back and wipes the blood off on her black dress. “I apologize it is usually your assigned mate that does this but we do not have that sort of time.”
I gasp as fire shoots from her bite mark on my arm through the rest of my body. I try to stand to run back to my car but my knees give out and I land on the floor. I curl up into a big ball and let out a sound I have never made before. My clothes start to rip as my body expands and twists into weird angles. I cry out as the fire feeling licks down my stomach to my legs. Black dots appear in my vision and I fade into black.
