The Night of Stars
The night was unusually quiet, the kind of silence that made every small sound feel significant. A soft breeze moved gently through the trees, carrying the scent of earth after a long, hot day. Above, the sky stretched endlessly, dotted with stars that shimmered like distant secrets waiting to be revealed. Amara sat alone on a wooden bench at the edge of the park, her eyes fixed on the sky. It had become her habit to escape here whenever life felt too heavy. Tonight was no different. Her thoughts were tangled, filled with questions she couldn't answer and feelings she couldn't explain.
"Do you always look at the stars like they owe you something?" The voice startled her. She turned quickly, her heart skipping a beat, and found a young man standing a few steps away. He wasn't threatening—just unexpected. His expression held a mix of curiosity and quiet confidence.
"I could ask you the same thing," Amara replied, narrowing her eyes slightly. He smiled, walking closer but keeping a respectful distance. "Fair enough. I guess we're both here for the same reason then."
"And what reason is that?" she asked.
"To think. Or maybe... to forget." Amara studied him for a moment. There was something in his voice—something honest. She shifted slightly on the bench, making space without saying a word. He took the hint and sat down beside her.
"I'm Kofi," he said.
"Amara."
For a while, neither of them spoke. They simply sat side by side, staring up at the vast sky. It was strange but not uncomfortable. It felt... easy.
"Do you believe in promises?" Kofi asked suddenly. Amara let out a small breath. "Depends on who's making them." Kofi nodded slowly. "I think promises are like stars. They look small from far away, but they can mean everything if you really pay attention." She turned to look at him, surprised by the depth of his words. "That's... a different way of seeing things."
"Maybe," he said with a soft shrug. "Or maybe I just like believing that some things can last."
Amara looked back at the sky, her expression softening. "I used to believe that too."
"Used to?" She hesitated, then shook her head. "Life changes people."
There was a pause. Then Kofi leaned back slightly and pointed up. "Pick one."
"What?"
"A star. Any star you like." Amara frowned but played along, scanning the sky until she settled on one that shone just a little brighter than the rest. "That one."
"Alright," Kofi said. "Let's make a promise."
She laughed softly. "You don't even know me."
"Maybe not," he admitted. "But sometimes the best promises are made before life complicates everything."
Amara hesitated. Something about the moment felt unreal, as if it existed outside of time. "Fine," she said quietly. "What kind of promise?" Kofi looked up at the same star she had chosen. "That no matter where life takes us, no matter how far apart we end up... we won't forget this moment."
Amara's heart stirred in a way she didn't expect. "... Okay," she whispered.
They sat in silence once more, but this time it felt different, like something had begun. Above them, the stars continued to shine—unchanged, distant, and quietly witnessing the beginning of a
Promise neither of them yet understood.
