The Wedding He Destroyed
CHAPTER ONE Elena Carter had always believed that the happiest day of her life would begin with a wedding dress. She had been wrong. The happiest day of her life was supposed to be today. At twenty-five, she stood in front of a full-length mirror inside the bridal suite of the Blackwood Grand Hotel, staring at her reflection. The woman in the mirror looked beautiful. Her ivory wedding gown hugged her waist before falling gracefully to the floor. Tiny crystals glittered across the bodice, catching the afternoon sunlight that entered through the enormous windows. Her dark hair was pinned into an elegant style, leaving a few soft strands around her face. She looked like a bride. A real bride. Mrs. Alexander Black. Elena touched the diamond necklace around her neck. It had belonged to Alexander's mother. He had given it to her three days earlier. "Wear this on our wedding day." Those six words had kept her awake that night. Alexander had never been a man of many words. He was twenty-eight, the heir to Black Enterprises, and one of the youngest billionaires in the country. The newspapers described him as cold, ruthless and impossible to impress. Elena knew another side of him. Or at least, she thought she did. She knew how he took his coffee. She knew that he hated crowded restaurants. She knew that whenever he was worried, he rubbed his thumb against the side of his index finger. And she knew that whenever he looked at her for more than a few seconds, her heart forgot how to beat. They had been engaged for eleven months. Their families had arranged the marriage because of a business alliance, but Elena had fallen in love with him somewhere along the way. She had never demanded that he say he loved her. She had simply waited. Today, she thought, he would finally say it. Her phone vibrated on the dressing table. Elena smiled. She expected Alexander. Instead, the screen showed: Unknown Number She frowned and answered. "Hello?" There was silence. Then a woman's voice whispered: "Don't marry Alexander Black." Elena's smile disappeared. "Who is this?" "If you marry him today, you'll regret it for the rest of your life." "Who are you?" The caller hung up. Elena stared at the phone. A prank. It had to be. She put the phone down. A knock came at the door. "Miss Carter?" It was her maid of honor. "Come in." The door opened. Mia stepped inside, smiling. "Everyone is waiting for you." Elena forced a smile. "I'm coming." Mia looked at her suspiciously. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine." "You're pale." "Just nervous." Mia walked toward her. "That's normal. You're getting married to Alexander Black." Elena laughed softly. "I know." Mia adjusted the veil on her head. "You've dreamed about this for years." Elena looked at herself again. "Yes." She didn't mention the phone call. She didn't want anyone ruining today. Nothing was going to ruin today. Or so she believed. --- The ballroom was filled with hundreds of guests. Businessmen. Politicians. Celebrities. Members of both families. Everyone had gathered to witness the marriage of two powerful families. Elena's father had passed away several years earlier, so her uncle Richard was supposed to walk her down the aisle. The music began. The ballroom doors opened. Everyone stood. Elena took a deep breath. Then she walked. Her eyes searched for Alexander. She found him immediately. He stood at the altar in a perfectly tailored black suit. Tall. Handsome. Expressionless. Her heart fluttered. Then she noticed something. He wasn't looking at her. He was looking toward the entrance behind her. Elena frowned. She turned slightly. A woman was walking into the ballroom. She was breathtaking. Long black hair. Elegant red dress. Diamond earrings. And a confidence that made the entire room turn toward her. Elena had never seen her before. But Alexander had. The moment his eyes landed on the woman, his expression changed. For the first time that day, Elena saw emotion on his face. Shock. Pain. And something that looked dangerously close to love. Elena stopped walking. Richard gently touched her arm. "Keep going." She couldn't. Alexander was still staring at the woman. Then the woman walked directly toward him. And Alexander did something Elena had never seen him do. He smiled. Not the polite smile he gave business associates. Not the small smile he sometimes gave Elena. A real smile. Warm. Tender. Familiar. Elena's heart cracked. The woman reached him. Alexander took her hand. Whispers immediately spread through the ballroom. Elena's mother covered her mouth. Someone behind Elena gasped. She couldn't hear anything anymore. All she could see was Alexander holding another woman's hand on their wedding day. She finally found her voice. "Alex?" Alexander looked at her. Their eyes met. For several seconds, nobody moved. Elena waited. She expected him to explain. To release the woman's hand. To walk toward her. Instead, he said quietly: "Elena, I'm sorry." Four words. Four words that destroyed everything. Her eyes burned. "What is this?" The woman beside him lowered her gaze. Alexander looked at Elena. "I can't marry you." A murmur swept through the ballroom. Elena felt as though the entire floor had disappeared beneath her feet. "You can't..." She swallowed. "What do you mean you can't marry me?" Alexander's jaw tightened. "I'm sorry." "Why?" He didn't answer. "Why, Alexander?" The woman finally spoke. "Because he loves me." Elena looked at her. Then she noticed the ring on the woman's finger. Her heart stopped. It was the Black family engagement ring. The ring Alexander's mother had once told Elena would belong only to the woman who became his wife. Elena slowly looked at Alexander. "Is that true?" Alexander's silence was enough. Tears threatened to fall. She refused to let them. Not here. Not in front of hundreds of people. Not for him. She slowly removed her engagement ring. Her hands were shaking. Then she walked toward the altar. Everyone watched. She placed the ring on the table. "I understand." Alexander's eyes narrowed. "Elena..." She raised a hand. "Don't." Her voice was quiet. Almost frighteningly quiet. "I won't beg you." The ballroom became completely silent. Elena looked at the woman beside him. "Congratulations." Then she looked at Alexander one final time. "You just saved me from making the biggest mistake of my life." She turned around. And walked away. She didn't run. She didn't cry. She didn't look back. But the moment the ballroom doors closed behind her, the tears finally came. She pressed one hand against her mouth. A sob escaped. Mia rushed toward her. "Elena!" "Don't." She wiped her face. "I don't want anyone to see me cry." Mia hugged her anyway. Elena closed her eyes. Three years. She had loved Alexander for three years. And in less than three minutes, he had destroyed everything. She didn't know that this wasn't the end of her story. It was only the beginning. --- That night, Elena packed one suitcase. She left the Blackwood mansion without saying goodbye. At the gate, she stopped. For one final moment, she looked back at the house. The place where she had imagined building a family. The place where she had imagined growing old with Alexander. Then she whispered: "Never again." She got into the car. As it drove away, her phone vibrated. Another unknown number. This time, there was a message. You were never supposed to marry him. Elena stared at the screen. Another message arrived. Your father's death was not an accident. Her blood ran cold. Then a final message appeared. And Alexander knows why. Elena's fingers tightened around the phone. For the first time that night, her heartbreak was replaced by something else. Fear. She looked out at the dark road. "Alexander..." Three years later, she would discover the truth. And when she did, she would realize that the wedding she thought had destroyed her life... had actually saved it. To be continued.
