Chapter 1
'A real family?' I stood at the doorway, feeling chilled to the bone, my hands trembling uncontrollably. 'If they are going to be real family, what about me? Where do I fit into this picture?'
Through the slightly open door, I saw the warm yellow light falling on the three people inside. Jonah had one arm around Tessie's shoulders, his face beaming with a sweet, happy smile.
And my son, sitting at the piano, turned his head and whined to Tessie. "Mommy, when you and Dad get married, does that mean I can stop calling that woman Mom anymore? She never lets me eat snacks and forces me to take medicine every day. I hate her so much!"
I always knew my son wasn't particularly fond of me.
He had been sickly since childhood, and to improve his health, I consulted many doctors and adjusted his prescription countless times before finally arriving at the current regimen.
It was healing for his body without being too strong.
I was also extremely careful about his daily diet.
I didn't cook for myself, but anything he ate was made by my own hands.
But I never imagined that not only did he not like me—he actually hated me.
Fists clenched at my sides, I stared intently at Tessie.
She wasn't particularly beautiful. At best, she was plain-looking, but she had an air of gentleness about her and always wore light-colored clothes.
Her soft features were a stark contrast to mine.
Tessie reached out and tenderly stroked my son's face, her voice gentle.
"Of course you can. You've had it tough, calling someone else mom for four years. Our little one can eat whatever he wants, and Mommy will never stop you."
My son cheered and happily resumed practicing the piano.
Tessie turned her head and whispered to Jonah, "Jonah, are you sure your plan will work? Won't there be any problems?"
"Don't worry, Raiza takes medicine every night before bed, and I always watch her take it. Nothing can go wrong," Jonah replied reassuringly.
"That's good. Jonah, I'm really tired of all this sneaking around."
Tessie hugged Jonah's neck, and as she raised her arms, her sleeve slid down, revealing a bracelet on her wrist.
This bracelet was a gift given to me by a business partner.
Because it was too big, I had always kept it in my jewelry box and never worn it.
A few days ago, I suddenly couldn't find it, and I asked Jonah to help me look for it around the house, not thinking much of it.
I never thought he'd pass it off as his own gift to Tessie.
I couldn't stomach watching their little family any longer, so I went downstairs.
Sitting in the car, I lit a cigarette with trembling hands.
My heart was still racing from the shock. It pounded so hard I thought it might leap out of my throat.
I was not actually very familiar with Tessie. I only knew that she was Jonah's old classmate.
When our son suddenly took an interest in piano lessons recently, Jonah contacted her.
My busy work schedule meant I rarely saw Tessie.
We only met briefly when she first came to our house to teach.
That day, Tessie urgently needed to use the bathroom, and I was about to tell her where it was.
But she rushed past me before I could say anything.
I was confused, but Jonah simply explained that he had already told her where the bathroom was when he went downstairs to greet her.
Jonah and I had dated for four years and had been married for four years. After eight years together, I totally trusted him.
I never had even the slightest doubt.
But thinking about it now, they might have been having an affair for a long time.
Only was I left in the dark, foolishly unaware.
My thoughts were snapped back by the sudden ringing of the phone.
It was Jonah calling.
After arriving at the company today, I realized I had forgotten the documents I needed.
I had planned to ask Jonah to bring them to me, but he didn't answer my call.
Left with no alternative, I had to return home myself. To my shock, Jonah had given me such an unexpected surprise.
Taking a deep breath, I suppressed the rising anger that wanted to immediately confront him, trying to make my voice sound as composed as possible.
"Raiza, did you call me earlier for something?"
Jonah's voice on the other end of the phone was as gentle as ever.
I closed my eyes. The scenes I had just witnessed played on loop in my mind. My hand holding the phone shook uncontrollably. My breathing grew ragged.
"Nothing. Just... missed you."
Jonah chuckled softly, his tone affectionate. "All these years, and you're still so clingy? I miss you too, Raiza. Shall I pick you up after work?"
"No need, I have to get back to work now."
Without waiting for Jonah's reply, I hung up the phone first.
Jonah's tone didn't reveal even the slightest hint of anything unusual.
Everything before my eyes became blurry. I let out a mirthless laugh as tears rolled down my cheeks.
Eight years of love. I had considered Jonah to be everything in my life.
But now, I discovered that most of it had been a lie...
