Chapter 33Johnny rose early having spent a sleepless night alone. He and Bee kept overly cheerful in front of the children, but any interaction between them was cold and detached. From time to time Bee sniped at him unable to hide her annoyance. The children were excitedly chatting about the day ahead. But the frosty atmosphere between their parents wasn't missed by Marie and she tried to break the tension by striking up a conversation with Bee.
“My friend Isobel is going to the fun day with her family. She said we could meet up if that's all right with you,” Marie said.
Bee had met Isobel once before and didn't trust the girl to behave herself. Margaret Wilson, the woman who employed her as an au pair, was forever moaning about her antics.
“She's basically a good girl,” she would say.
