Chapter 11When Elizabeth called her brother, his wife Jenny answered the phone.
“I'm sorry,” she said. “Neil's not available at the moment. I'll let him know you rang.”
Her voice sounded strained. Elizabeth got on well with her sister-in-law, in fact, they were quite good friends and often got together for shopping trips or evenings out. Elizabeth knew by her response that Neil was there. Jenny had said 'not available' rather than not in. He was home but refusing to talk to her. This had been the third time she'd rung and she'd yet to receive a call back.
“I'm sorry you can't make it to the picnic,” she persisted. “I think the children especially, are going to have a great time.”
“Yes, I'm sorry too, but you know what it's like. Neil has other plans for us.”
