Chapter One
Catherine
"I will always love you, John!" I said sobbing as we hugged before he boarded the plane.
"It won't be long my love, just a few months and then I will be back in your arms for the rest of our lives" John said.
He hugged me one more time then he walked away. His mother Rachel and I threw each other's arms as our hearts broke.
He looked handsome as ever standing six foot two inches tall, dark rich brown hair with the sky eyes that could melt a thousand girls hearts. He's all mine I reminded myself as I looked longingly after him. The few weeks we've had as a young married couple, was still astonishing me.That he chose me out of everyone in our entire graduating class to date for all four years of highschool.
"He will be back, I just hope safe and sound! And in one piece ugh!" Rachel exclaimed as her tears kept falling.
"Mom, let's get back to town." I stated as his plane lifted off.
We walked back to her little black SUV and John's blue Camero that he adored as his pride and joy. Rachel braced me more time before wiping her eyes again for the twentieth time since he departed from us.
"Follow me child but please drive careful. We both know how upset John would be if anything happened to you or his car." Rachel simply put as she walked around to her driver seat.
I got into the car carefully as if any imprint on his car would rub off John's presence. With a deep sign I smelled his cologne that seeped deep into his leather seats as if he was still there hold me in his arms. Only time will be faithful in showing how deep our love will keep him safe, I kept thinking as I followed his mom onto the highway south of the big city. John hated being in the big city, he was much more of a country boy. His animals growing up always included a pet squirrel, pet pigs, pet birds or anything else that crawled into his tree house. Life could only get harder with him gone. He is the only family I have other than his mother.
The forty minute drive went by faster than I was aware of, still in a daze I guess. I pulled the car into the barn John transformed into his own repair garage after his father Leroy died a year ago.
"Catherine do you want to stay for dinner my dear?" Rachel yelled as she headed for the farm house door.
"No, I just want to be by myself in misery" I muttered as I walked solemnly towards the house.
So much of this place is going to hurt with John gone, memories of the both of us is everywhere. From making out in the barn loft, to the hand holding after courting on the front porch and even in the living room where we watched so many movies together holding each other as if we were glued together.
I sat down on the couch as my eyes started to fill with tears that seemed endless. Only to be spooked by a loud banging on the front door. Rachel walked cautiously towards the door and peered in the window seeing who it was.
"Ma'am, you really need to open the door." A man stated through the wooden door that rachel left closed holding her hand on the knob as if it was stone and wouldn't budge.
I got up swiftly to help rachel who was frozen. I recognized that it was sheriff Matthew Conway, whom was a complete jerk and everyone who he disliked got a bad shoulder from him.I immediately opened it with anger and rage.
"Can I help you, Mr.Conway?" I stated promptly.
"Little Catty, you may not!" Sherrif Conway exclaimed.
"What does the likes of you want? This is private property if you didn't notice the sign!" Rachel said also in anger.
"I need to know where your son is, Mrs. Bryd." Conway said with his eyes piercing my very soul as if he could stab me with them.
"He just left for the war, you know the one you and your family avoided?" I said with disgust.
"Now young little lady, when you sign up to go to war you go, when your dedication for other careers are elsewhere you go there. He needed to come down to the station this morning because his Camero was reported in a hit and run this past weekend." Conway explained.
"I was with him all weekend, he was never in an accident!" I exclaimed as I walked back to the couch.
"His Camero is in the barn and is not at all damaged." Rachel stated as she walked out the door with Conway following her.
I waited for her to come back for almost an hour before I started to get worried. I quickly walked out the door to the barn where they both were still talking about the accident that never occured.
"I'll file this into the report and get him off the suspect list. I will have to talk to him though so as soon as his C.O. gives you his set location let me know." Conway nodded towards Rachel as he walked away.
"Rachel, what was that about?" I asked turning her to face me.
She shaked her head as she started crying.
"He said that the hit and run killed a person! That if we didn't have the car in pristine condition he was hand John over to the Federal Government to be extradited to a Federal Penitentiary for man slaughter!" Rachel exclaimed as she fell to her knees.
I bundled her into my arms and walked her back to the house into her bedroom. She laid down immediately as if she were a child who needed to be tended to.
I covered her with a blanket and turned off her lamp. With it only being eight in the evening I knew we both needed to rest our eyes of the crying for a while. I headed back to the barn to my car that John always kept parked next to his Camero. It was nothing but a beater with a heater but it worked for me. I was always never a fancy person, never needed to have the best of the best of stuff just durable.
Once I got into the small little town that we lived in Trura, I quickly got tired which was abnormal of me but given how today was I just pushed it out of my mind. I pulled into my little house my parents left in their will. They died when I was finishing middle school which broke my heart but at least my aunt Nicole moved here to take care of me until I turned eighteen two months ago. She is only three months away from giving birth to her first daughter with her husband who recruited John to go to the war with him in his platoon. They lived across town in a bigger house that they have always wanted to fill with babies. The only problem for them was trying to get pregnant, after eight year of marriage they tried for five then stopped a year and got pregnant! I felt giddy thinking of how I wanted babies too but year into the future especially with John gone we'd have to wait at least a year.
I didn't realize my thinking got me through a shower, brushing my teeth and settling into my bed I shared with John. His pillow still indented by where his head would be placed when he came here. He split his time with sleeping here and working the farm. Being Rachel's only son, it was hard for him to be only ten miles from her but I knew his love for me wouldn't cause too much strife between them. Rachel and my relationship seemed almost as carefree and easy as it was between John and I.
I closed my eyes and drifted off into troubled sleep as the bed cooled to the summer night.
