Nicole
"Get in the car now Nicole, no need to grab those bags!" he yelled as he rushed to grab the bags I forgot when I locked the door.
I walked to his police vehicle and got into the passenger seat as he threw the three bags I packed in hurry when Dale left scared that missing him would cause something to happen. He ran around the vehicle bumping into the fender before he scrambled in the car.
"Carefully get us all to the hospital Matty!" I screamed through another ripple of pain.
After twenty minutes of flying through the stop sign and the street light of Winters we made it to the Winters Regional Hospital. He stopped in front of the ambulance bay as two nurses and a emergency doctor ran out the doors.
"We got a code 11, possible pre-birth with repeat miscarriages and stillborns!" Matty yelled as he got out meeting the gurney beside the vehicle. The nurses helped me onto it before rushing into the hospital. Once a ultrasound, pelvic check, and heart beat check was done they assured me that the baby was fine with a strong heart beat. They performed test after and test with the final reasoning that my pain was kidney stones passing.
"Now with the added calcium your baby doesn't need, your body stores it so you must've stored too much and made large kidneys stones. Thankfully they will pass in a few hours but the baby will be staying out for the remainder of your pregnancy. Take a pain pill we have prescribed that is safe with your pregnancy and you will be fine just consume less calcium so that this doesn't occur again." The male doctor reassured as he put the clip board under his arm, he smiled before patting my knee and walked to the door pausing before leaving.
He said laughing "Your husband was smart to get you here quickly for a test run but surely he doesn't use the sirens again next time, haha."
"Ohh uh thank you!"I said as Matt came into the room allowing the doctor to make his exit quickly moving onto the next patient assumingly.
"I am glad you and the little babe is doing alright. I am worried about you Nicole!" Matt said as he sat down in the chair next to my bed.
He grabbed my hand and held it while I thought of what the doctor said making her speechless.
"Thank you Matty, I don't know what we'd do without you rushing to our aid." I said softly.
"Your one of my closest oldest friends Nicole, I'd do anything for you."He replied matter of fact like.
"I know that and I think Dale would appreciate it too." I said reminding myself and him that I was married.
He recoiled at me saying that, taking his hand back and standing up. His hands on his hips he came close and kissed my forehead.
"I'll wait for you to be discharged and then take you home unless you need to go to the store or something?"He asked walking towards the door.
"Yes just take us home, we have everything we need there." I said as he walked out the door.
Matty had always had a crush on me but he knew those feelings were never returned. I always had eyes for Dale and mistook our friendship for being friends when everyone saw his love for me as I did. Dale and him were almost enemies, Dale being a jock and Matty being a smart nerdy guy. They were polar opposites in the most different ways.
An hour later the hospital discharged me and Matty was back helping me into his police car.
"Mama made a soup while we were waiting, she's bringing it to your house as we speak."Matty said as he got in the car.
"Oh that's very nice of her, please thank her for me when you see her." I said staring out the window waiting to see us move.
"I do have a question for you but I don't want to hurt your feelings." He said quietly.
"What is it Matty?"I asked looking at him finally.
"Why would Dale leave right before your supposed to be delivering?"He asked with emotion all in his face.
"He had to, he was demanded to go by his C.O." I stated as I got angrier about the subject.
He pulled into my driveway but not before making a statement that took my breath away, I hurried out of the car while he followed with my bags. I quickly thanked him then shut the door after him once he put my bags down making me push him out the door.I kept thinking about what he said. Closing my eyes, I leaned on the door exhausted from all that transpired.
"If you were my woman, I wouldn't leave you to bear anything alone." he said.
I felt my heart drawing closer to Matty and pulling apart from Dale. I was married to Dale but it seemed like he was more married to the Military than to me. My heart broke with the though causing me to break down mentally. Exhausted from the day while crying I gathered myself to the couch and laid down. It was so lonesome in this house all by myself, having the baby by myself was the most scary thought I could come to bare. My love for this little girl was bigger than the love for my husband. I promised myself that once Dale came back in months time, I would demand a divorce upon abandonment and let him slave his life away in the military for a nation who couldn't care if he died fighting for it.
As the sun dawned it's last lights my eyes closed as my dreams danced away with fleeting moments of me holding a baby, of dancing in a long dress with Matty in a tuxedo. Hmm quiet my mind sleep.
