Chapter 1: The Breakup
The wind blew gently through the trees as Luna stood in the quiet park. The air was cool, and the leaves rustled above her head. But Luna didn’t notice any of it. Her heart was beating too fast. Her hands were shaking. She could barely breathe. She looked up at Collins, the man she loved. The man who was her fated mate. But today, his eyes were cold. “This is the end, Luna,” Collins said, his voice flat and without emotion. Luna blinked. She thought she heard him wrong. “What… what do you mean?” she asked softly. “I can’t be with you anymore.” “No,” Luna whispered. “You don’t mean that. We’re mates. You love me.” Collins looked away, his jaw tight. “It doesn’t matter. I’ve made my decision.” “But why?” she asked, stepping closer. “Did I do something wrong? Did something happen?” He shook his head. “It’s not about you.” “Then tell me what it is! Please, Collins!” He closed his eyes for a second, then opened them again. “I can’t tell you. It’s better if you forget me.” Luna grabbed his arm. “I don’t want to forget you! I don’t understand! You said you would love me forever. You said the Moon Goddess brought us together.” “I lied,” he said. Luna’s heart dropped. The pain hit her like a stone to the chest. Her legs felt weak. Tears filled her eyes. “You’re lying now,” she whispered. “You don’t mean that.” Collins pulled away from her touch. “Goodbye, Luna.” And just like that, he turned and walked away. Luna stood frozen. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t think. The cold wind blew through her long hair, but she didn’t feel it. It was over. The bond between them still pulsed in her heart. That meant it wasn’t broken. That meant it was real. So why did he walk away? Why did he look so empty? Luna sat down on the cold bench nearby. She didn’t cry at first. She just stared at the path where Collins had walked away. “I don’t understand,” she whispered to herself. Memories flashed in her mind. The way he smiled when she laughed. The way he held her close during the full moon. The way his hand always found hers when they were walking. Everything felt like a lie now. But deep in her heart, Luna knew something was wrong. This wasn’t just a breakup. There was something more. Something dark. She pulled her jacket tighter around her and stood up. She wouldn’t cry in the park. Not here. Not now. But as she walked home, the tears finally came. Slowly, quietly, they fell down her cheeks. She wiped them away, but they kept coming. She loved him. And he left her. The moment she got home, she went to her room and shut the door. She curled up on her bed and stared at the ceiling. Why would he do this? She didn’t sleep that night. Her mind kept spinning. Her heart kept breaking over and over again. By morning, her eyes were red and her head ached. But one thing was clear. Collins was hiding something. Something he thought was big enough to break their bond. Something he believed she couldn’t handle. But he was wrong. Luna was stronger than he thought. She would find out the truth. Even if it hurt. Even if it changed everything. She had to know. Because real love doesn’t just disappear. And she knew, deep in her soul, that their story wasn’t over. Not yet. Luna sat in her room, staring at the window. The morning sun streamed in, but it felt cold. Every inch of her felt empty. She had barely slept, and the questions kept swirling in her mind. Why had Collins broken up with her? Why did he suddenly become so distant? She kept thinking back to the look in his eyes when he said it was over. It wasn’t anger or hatred. No, it was something much worse: fear. What was he afraid of? Luna stood up and walked over to the window. She could see the park in the distance, the place where it all happened. She remembered the feel of the cold air, the sound of the leaves rustling. And most of all, she remembered Collins’ voice, so final, so cold. She clenched her fists, frustration building inside her. “Why won’t you just tell me the truth?” she whispered aloud. Her phone buzzed on the desk, pulling her from her thoughts. Luna walked over and picked it up. It was a text from her best friend, Mia. Mia: Hey, how are you doing? Want to hang out later? Luna stared at the message. She could feel the weight of the silence in her room. She could feel the emptiness where Collins used to be. The last thing she wanted was to pretend everything was okay and hang out with Mia, but she also didn’t want to sit here alone and think about Collins all day. Luna: I don’t know. I’m not feeling great today. Mia: You need to get out of the house. Come on, we can go grab coffee or something. You deserve to feel better. Luna thought for a moment, then typed out a response. Luna: Alright, I’ll meet you at the cafe in an hour. She sighed as she put the phone down. Maybe a change of scenery would help clear her mind. Maybe Mia could make her forget about Collins, even for just a little while. But as Luna got ready, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. She needed answers. And she needed them fast. The cafe was busy when Luna arrived. Mia was sitting at their usual table, her eyes lighting up when she saw Luna walk in. “Luna! It’s so good to see you!” Mia said, giving her a big hug. Luna forced a smile. “Yeah, it’s good to see you too.” Mia eyed her closely, concern written all over her face. “You don’t look okay, you know. I’m guessing it’s because of Collins?” Luna nodded, her stomach twisting. “Yeah. He… he ended things.” Mia’s eyes widened. “What? No way! He’s the one who pushed you away?” “Yeah,” Luna whispered, feeling the tears threatening to spill again. “I don’t know why. He just… left. Like it meant nothing to him.” Mia took her hand. “But you guys were so happy. He never gave you any signs that something was wrong?” Luna shook her head. “No. He was distant the last few weeks, but he always had an excuse. I thought everything was fine. Then, out of nowhere, he just said it was over. He didn’t even explain why.” “Something’s definitely going on, Luna,” Mia said, her voice serious. “There’s no way he just walked away without a reason.” Luna looked down at the table, the coffee mug in front of her cold and untouched. “I don’t know what to do. I’ve been thinking about it nonstop, and I just… I can’t make sense of it.” “Well, maybe you should talk to him,” Mia suggested. “Ask him why he did it.” “I can’t just go up to him and ask,” Luna replied. “I don’t even know where he is. He’s been avoiding me.” Mia raised an eyebrow. “Then what about finding out what he’s hiding? You can’t just let it go. You deserve the truth.” Luna thought for a moment. Maybe Mia was right. Maybe she couldn’t let it go. But how could she get the truth from him when he wouldn’t even speak to her? “I don’t know if he’ll tell me the truth,” Luna said softly. “But I need to find out what happened.” “Then you’ll have to do it on your own,” Mia said, leaning back in her chair. “You know I’ll always be here to help, but you have to go after it. If he’s hiding something, you deserve to know what it is.” Luna nodded slowly, the weight of the decision settling on her shoulders. Mia was right. She couldn’t sit around waiting for answers. She had to take matters into her own hands. That evening, Luna couldn’t sit still. She paced back and forth in her room, trying to think of what to do. The idea of going after Collins, of demanding answers from him, made her heart race with both fear and determination. She could feel it deep inside her—something wasn’t right. Something wasn’t adding up. Collins had always been honest with her before. So why wasn’t he now? Why was he running away from her? Why was he acting like this? And why had he broken their bond so easily? Luna’s thoughts were interrupted by a sudden knock on her door. “Luna?” her mother’s voice called from the other side. Luna opened the door, surprised to see her mother standing there with a concerned expression on her face. “Are you okay?” her mother asked softly. Luna nodded, though she didn’t feel okay at all. “I’m fine. Just… thinking.” Her mother stepped into the room and sat on the edge of the bed. “You know, sweetie, sometimes people make decisions that don’t make sense to us. But you can’t let it eat you up. You have to live your life, no matter what.” Luna sat next to her mother, her heart heavy. “But I don’t understand why Collins left. He was everything to me.” “I know,” her mother said gently. “But sometimes people change. Sometimes, there are things they can’t talk about. You’ll find out the truth when the time is right.” Luna’s eyes filled with tears again. “I don’t want to wait for the truth. I need to know now.” Her mother smiled softly. “I know you do. But sometimes, waiting is the hardest part. You just have to trust that things will work out.” Luna nodded, though she wasn’t sure she could trust the process. She didn’t feel like she could just sit back and wait. She needed to take control of her own story. And she would. She had to. The rest of the night passed in a blur. Luna couldn’t sleep. She kept thinking about Collins, about the breakup, and about the mysteries that seemed to surround it all. As much as her mother tried to comfort her, Luna couldn’t stop feeling like something was wrong. Deep down, she knew the truth was just out of reach. But she wouldn’t stop until she found it. Luna lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, her mind spinning. She closed her eyes and w hispered to herself. “I’ll find out the truth. I’ll make him tell me.” And with that thought, Luna finally allowed herself to drift off into an uneasy sleep, knowing that the journey ahead would be far from easy.
