Working
The harsh wind of New York blew across my face as I rushed down the streets trying to be on time for my job, but as I kept pushing forward it felt as if I had made no progress due to the busy streets. Luckily the café was down the street and I had five minutes left if I wanted to be on time and since the world was surprisingly on my side I had made it just in time to here my boss yelling my name
"I'm here!" I shouted as if the chiming of the bell didn't give me away.
"Just on time," Beatrice, my boss, said, stepping from the breakroom, "go change, we'll be opening in five minutes and you're working the usual barista today."
"Yes mam," I mumbled moving around her. I went towards the changing room putting on a black slack and a white shirt thrown on the apron to complete the look.
I went back towards the main room trying to prepare the items I needed for my job today, but was stopped when the bell chimed.
"I'm so sorry, I had a rough night!" Junie, my friend, shouted.
"You use that excuse everyday to find a new one," Beatrice said, rolling her eyes.
"Sure," Junie said moving towards me, she already had her work attire on so she didn't need to change.
"So what did you do last night?" I asked her as she stacked cups.
"Partying as usual," she said, turning towards me.
"You know maybe you should start doing something good with your life, you know settle down or even try school," I told her.
"Or could try doing something fun for once," she said following me as I moved around the counter, "you're pretty stuck up for a twenty-one year old."
"No I'm not, I just have actual problems unlike you," I told her, wiping down the counter.
"What's that supposed to mean?" she asked, stopping my hand from going forward.
"What problems do you really have other than the fact your father didn't buy you a new Birkin bag and you only have this job so you're father think you're doing something responsible," I told her staring her in her eyes, "while others fight to get jobs like this to feed their families or to bay bills and debts. So excuse me if I come off as stuck up."
"Well that's rude," she said rolling her eyes, "I was just saying you should loosen up more not to go in a whole monologue."
"Excuse me I have a job to do," I said, pushing past her.
"Girls get ready, we're opening now!" Beatrice shouted.
It took fifteen minutes for people to come bursting through the doors with their computers looking for energy. It was going well until I noticed a man watching me along the side of the other street and although he was on the other side of the street I could see his glowing green and blue eyes.
"Good morning, I would like an americano with a ham and cheese sandwich," a customer ordered but I wasn't really paying attention to him.
"Your total will be $11.7," I said to him, not taking my eyes off the man whose eyes were so captivating. The customer waved the money in my face causing me to look at him with a blush on my cheeks taking the money from him, but that didn't stop me from looking back at the strange man..
"Do I have to wait all day?" he asked.
"I'm sorry," I said to him and moved to make his coffee and sandwich, but I could still feel the eyes of someone burning into my back.
"Here you go and I'm sorry for the wait," I told him after giving him his food, but before he could I grabbed his arm.
"Look lady you're a nice looking girl but I'm not giving you my number," he said once he saw my hand on his bicep.
"Eww, no I was just gonna ask if you see that thing on the other side of the street," I told him, causing a blush to form on his cheeks.
"Umm no I don't see anyone over there," he said looking over his shoulder and then looked back at me weirdly.
"Thanks," I called after him as he walked off. As I looked back over I didn't see the figure either causing my eyebrows to furrow in confusion.
The day went by and I still haven't seen anything. I know I should feel relieved that nothing was watching me but for some reason I felt drawn towards it. After my shift was done I went in the back to change into my next work uniform, for a bar, which consisted of a white button up with a black vest and black shorts, I threw my coat over the outfit to protect me from the cold and threw my bag over my shoulder.
It was now 11 pm and I was walking along the dark streets of New York when I felt someone watching me. I looked behind me to see someone following me and he didn't look too nice. I sped up my pace until I heard his footsteps also quickening causing me to know it's not a coincidence and I took off running. I heard him rushing to catch me up and when he did he grabbed my upper arm turning me around to his grimy face bearing his yellow teeth.
"What's in the bag," he sneered, gripping my arm harder which I'm pretty sure would bruise.
"Nothing," I told him calmly, my dad always says you should always be calm in a fight.
"Stop playing around," he said, pushing me, causing me to stumble back. I caught back my stance and as he stalked towards me he pulled his fist up in the air about to hit me, but I grabbed his fist twisting his wrist so it breaks. He screamed out grabbing his wrist, I grabbed his collar, kneeing him in the stomach repeatedly and then dropped him on the ground.
"I hope you learned your lesson," I said as I stooped to his level.
I stood back up brushing off imaginary dust. I looked down on my watch, causing me to realize I only had ten minutes to reach the bar. Why am I always late? I ran down the streets and luckily the bar wasn't that far from the café.
As I bursted through I quickly ran behind the counter taking off my coat and bag hoping that the boss hadn't done staff inspections because if he did I would be fired. Nathan, my boss, was a cool guy when he wasn't working but when it comes to his business he didn't play and being on time was a major thing for him.
"Staff inspection," I heard him shout, causing me to let out a breath of relief knowing I wouldn't get fired.
I rushed from around the counter to be in the line for the inspection, I brushed off imaginary dust and smooth out my vest after seeing it crumbled due to the fight and running. When it was my turn I stepped up but Nathan's face was concentrated on my arm and I'm pretty sure I knew what it was about.
"Everything all right?" he asked, pointing at the bruise with his pen.
"Yes sir I just had a small problem down the street," I told him.
"What happened?"
"Someone tried to rob me," I responded.
"And I'm sure you handled it," he said, searching his pockets.
"Yes I did," I said proudly.
"Good," he said then pulled out a black handkerchief handing it to me, "we don't need people thinking I'm abusing my employees."
"Thank you," I replied.
"You can go now," he said, nodding his head towards the bar.
I moved behind the bar pushing away my coat and bag behind a small fridge under the bar, I wrapped the handkerchief above the injury causing the fabric to fall and cover the bruise perfectly.
"We're opening now so everyone get ready!" my boss shouted. The place was fairly famous so everyone practically knew what time the bar was open and as suspected when the sign flipped to open it took about fifteen seconds for people to come through the door. People took seats around the bar and tables set out to help them watch performances on the stage in front.
Four women came around the bar talking about everything and anything. I didn't pay them attention until one called me over.
"Can we have four vodka martinis with olives," she ordered.
"Coming right up," I told them after drumming on the bar. I turned around looking for vodka and dry vermouth after I found them I took the shaker and poured the correct measurements in, I then took the ice scoop taking a the ice from the ice bin and placed it in the shaker with the liquor, I shook the tool then strained it into the glass .I took four martini picks and placed three olives on each, I placed the drinks in front of them which they answered with thank you's.
"That would be $21," I told them and got rewarded with the money and a ten dollar tip which I told her thank you for but she brushed it off.
"I know this is random, but do you know that man?" one of them questioned nodding their head in a different direction. I looked where she was referring to and was met with green and blue eyes staring back at me and for some reason I felt the urge to tell her yes when I didn't know him.
"Yes," I said for some strange reason.
"Well my girl here has a slight crush on him and he's been staring at you from we walked in so if you could back off a little," a redhead.
"Well he is my boyfriend," I lied, feeling as if I had no control on my words.
"Oh well, in that case have yourself a good night," one said, dragging them along with her as they moved from the bar. I looked over at the strange man and saw him smirking at me, making me tilt my hand to the side. Did he hear what I said about him?
He got up from his seat and for a second thought he was coming towards me but was quickly corrected when he went out the door. I felt the urge to follow him but I just stood behind the bar confused because I didn't know where these feelings were coming from. Even though I was a curious girl there was no way I would be losing a job over this and with that in mind I got back to work serving other customers and taking orders from waitresses and waiters.
The night went by smoothly and I finished working at twelve. I counted the tips I had gotten which came up to $500, many people were generous tonight. I don't know if its because of the alcohol or they were just being nice, but either way I'm not complaining.
I went out on the street and hailed a cab and since New York was the city that never sleeps it was pretty easy to find one. I went in the cab and was met by the blue and green eyes staring at me through the rearview mirror. I didn't even have time to ask any questions when the car went speeding down the road causing me to jerk forward and bang my head hard on the acrylic barrier.
"Will you slow down!" I shouted while holding onto the grab handle, but of course he didn't listen. It took another twenty minutes when he pulled over on an open field and I wasted no time getting out the car and he followed.
"What's you're problem!" I shouted but winced when it affected the painful headache I was having. He didn't even look at me, but was just staring at a watch.
"Where am I?" I asked but he didn't answer, "if you aren't gonna take me home can I at least have the car keys to bring myself back?"
"No," he said walking towards me.
"Why not?" I questioned walking towards him.
When he finally stepped in front of me it gave me time to study his features. He had an angular face with high cheekbones and a pronounced jawline, his forehead was a bit broad but was almost covered by his curly brown hair with the wind blowing, but of course the most distinctive feature was his heterochromia eyes and up close I could see blue specks in his green eyes and green specks in his blue eyes.
"Will you stop staring," he said with a smirk, "I know I'm handsome but calm down."
"Please the only reason why I'm even looking is because when the police ask for a description I know I have it encrypted in memory," I responded. He was about to say something but was cut off by the sound of his watch beeping.
"It's time," he told me.
"What are you talking about?" I was genuinely curious.
"For us to go," he told me, setting his watch on the floor and once he didn't have his eyes on me I took off running.
"Adora come back now!" he commanded and for some reason I felt as if I was being pulled back although my feet were going forward.
"Sleep," he said when I was in front of him, which confused me until I felt my eyes start to close.
"What did you do to me," I mumbled sleepily as I felt myself fall but he caught me. I saw something bright like a portal but didn't have any time to ask questions or fight back because all I saw was black.
