Blurb

Maya Bennett thought delivering flowers to a luxury hotel would be an ordinary job, but one wrong door makes her the only witness to a murder that powerful people will kill to conceal. With her younger brother's life hanging in the balance and nowhere left to run, Maya accepts an impossible offer from the city's most feared billionaire, Damien Blackwood, who promises her seven million dollars if she becomes his wife for one year.

The rules seem simple enough: live under his roof, convince the world they are deeply in love and never question why he chose her, but Damien's carefully controlled world begins to c***k when Maya discovers that he has been investigating the same murder she witnessed. The deeper she digs, the more she realizes that the danger surrounding them comes from inside his own family, and her husband may know far more than he admits.

Their marriage was supposed to be nothing more than a transaction, yet desire slowly turns their carefully rehearsed romance into something neither can control. When Maya finally discovers the secret behind Damien's vows, she realizes she may never have been his accidental bride.

The Wrong Door
The dead man smiled when he saw Maya Bennett, and that single expression frightened her more than the blood spreading across his expensive shirt because there was something deliberate about it, as though he had been expecting her arrival. Maya stood frozen in the doorway with a bouquet of white lilies pressed against her chest while Richard Whitmore struggled to remain upright beside his desk, one hand clamped over the wound in his stomach. Blood stained the cream colored carpet beneath him, and the metallic scent hanging in the air made Maya's stomach churn as she stared at the scene she could not understand. A tall man in a dark suit stood only a few feet away with a gun hanging loosely from his hand, and when he slowly turned his cold gaze toward her, Maya realized she had walked into a nightmare that had begun long before she arrived. "Who are you?" the stranger asked, his voice calm and controlled, which somehow made him more frightening than the weapon in his hand. "I'm the florist," Maya replied, forcing herself to remain still although her fingers tightened around the bouquet. "I was asked to deliver these flowers to Mr. Whitmore." The stranger's eyes moved from the lilies to her face, studying her with an unsettling patience that made Maya feel as though she were standing before a judge waiting for a verdict. Richard coughed violently and tried to steady himself against the desk, yet his attention remained fixed on Maya despite the pain twisting his features. Something in his expression suggested that her presence meant more than the delivery she had been sent to make, and when he finally spoke, his weak voice sent a chill through her. "Maya." Confusion pushed through her fear because she had never met Richard Whitmore before that evening, yet he had said her name with the certainty of someone who knew exactly who she was. Maya looked at him carefully, searching his blood stained face for an explanation while the stranger remained only a few steps away, watching every movement she made. "How do you know my name?" Maya asked. Richard opened his mouth, but the stranger stepped toward him before he could answer, and the sudden movement pulled Maya's attention back to the danger in the room. The man's hand closed around Richard's collar and dragged him upright, while the barrel of the gun remained close enough to his body to make any resistance seem pointless. Maya instinctively moved backward, her shoulder brushing against the doorframe as she tried to create enough distance between herself and the two men. "Where is the file?" the stranger demanded. Richard winced as the man's fingers tightened around his collar, but instead of answering, he gave a faint smile that made Maya's uneasiness deepen. There was no surrender in his expression, only the stubborn confidence of someone who knew he was protecting something the killer desperately needed. "You killed me for nothing," Richard whispered. The stranger's jaw tightened as his patience began to disappear, and his eyes hardened with a coldness that made Maya's stomach twist. "Where is it?" he demanded again. Richard looked directly at him and gave a quiet, almost mocking laugh despite the blood running down his shirt. "You already lost." The stranger slowly raised the gun, and Maya felt the room shrink around her as the weapon became the only thing she could see. Her heart hammered against her ribs while every instinct screamed at her to run, but fear had locked her legs in place. She lifted both hands slightly, desperate to make the man understand that she had nothing to do with Richard or whatever secret had brought the stranger there. "Please, I don't know anything," Maya said. "I was only delivering flowers, so just let me leave." The stranger turned his attention toward her, and the calmness in his expression made her blood run cold. He studied her for several seconds without speaking, as though he were deciding whether her ignorance made her harmless or whether leaving her alive would create a bigger problem. Maya tried not to move while Richard watched the exchange with growing urgency. "Then you should have stayed downstairs," the stranger finally said. He began walking toward her, and Maya's breathing became shallow as she backed toward the doorway. Her heel caught against the frame, causing her to stumble slightly, but she quickly regained her balance and kept her eyes on the man approaching her. He did not rush, because he seemed completely certain that she had nowhere to go, and that confidence frightened her more than if he had been chasing her. "Wait," Maya pleaded, forcing the word through her tightening throat. "Please, I really don't know what you're talking about." The stranger stopped only a few feet away, and his gaze dropped briefly to the bouquet in her hands before returning to her face. Maya followed his eyes and suddenly wondered whether the flowers themselves were the reason he had been watching her, but before she could ask, Richard slammed his hand against the desk with the last of his strength. "Run!" Richard shouted. Maya turned instantly, and the gunshot exploded behind her before she could take more than one step. Glass shattered somewhere inside the suite as she threw herself into the corridor, clutching the bouquet against her chest while her shoes struck the polished floor. She did not look back because terror had completely taken control, and her body cared only about escaping before the stranger could catch her. The gunshot continued echoing in her ears while adrenaline surged through her veins, pushing her forward even as fear threatened to overwhelm her. She reached the elevators and began pressing the call button repeatedly, but the doors remained closed while the sound of approaching footsteps grew louder behind her. Maya glanced over her shoulder and saw the stranger emerge from the suite, walking toward her with the same disturbing calmness he had shown inside the room. He was not running, and he was not shouting, yet something about his steady pace told Maya that he believed catching her was only a matter of time. Maya looked desperately toward the elevator display, but the numbers refused to change quickly enough, and when she heard another step behind her, she realized she could not wait any longer. Her eyes moved across the corridor until they found the emergency staircase, and without allowing herself another moment to think, she turned toward it and pushed through the heavy door. The door slammed shut behind her just as another gunshot echoed through the corridor. Maya froze for half a second, then tightened her grip on the bouquet and rushed down the staircase, unaware that something far more dangerous than the killer was already waiting for her below.
