Five years ago, Elena fled New York with a broken heart and a secret she couldn't share. Now, she’s back, fighting to save her daughter’s life and her struggling luxury brand. But a chance encounter at a high-society gala brings her face-to-face with the man who ruined her: Alexander Sterling, the ruthless billionaire. When Alexander discovers the truth, he doesn't want an apology—he wants his heir. He offers Elena an ultimatum: move into his estate and play the part of his fiancée, or lose her daughter forever. In a world of cold glass and gold, Elena must decide if she's a partner in his world, or a prisoner of his past.

Chapter 1: The Glass Shard
The shimmering lights of the Manhattan skyline usually felt like a promise, but tonight, they felt like a cage. Elena straightened the skirt of her vintage black dress, her fingers trembling slightly. She wasn’t supposed to be here. A high-society gala at the Sterling Plaza was the last place a struggling single mother with a failing perfume line belonged. "Just one lead, Elena," she whispered to herself, pressing a hand to the small glass vials in her clutch. "One investor, and Maya gets the surgery she needs. One 'yes' and we aren't evicted next month." She stepped into the ballroom, and the scent of excess hit her—expensive champagne, heavy lilies, and the unmistakable metallic tang of old money. Then, she smelled him. It was a scent she had spent five years trying to scrub from her memory: sandalwood, rain-slicked asphalt, and raw power. Her heart didn't just beat; it hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "The man of the hour," a voice whispered nearby. "Alexander Sterling. They say he hasn't smiled since he took over the firm. Cold as the glass in his buildings." Elena turned, her breath hitching. There he was. Alexander was taller than she remembered, his shoulders broader in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo that probably cost more than her entire life's earnings. His face was a masterpiece of harsh angles and shadowed eyes. He looked like a king who had forgotten how to be human. She tried to turn away, to vanish into the crowd, but the universe had other plans. A waiter jostled her arm, and her clutch flew open. The glass vials of her signature scent—Gold & Grace—shattered against the marble floor. The sound was like a gunshot in the sudden silence of the room. The crowd parted. Alexander Sterling turned his head. His gray eyes, sharp as flint, locked onto hers. For a moment, the world stopped. The billionaire's mask didn't just slip; it shattered. "Elena?" his voice was a low, dangerous rasp that made her skin electric. "Alexander," she breathed, her pride warring with her panic. He walked toward her, each step echoing like a heartbeat. He didn't look at the broken glass or the curious socialites. He only looked at her. He stopped inches away, his heat radiating through his silk shirt, his scent overwhelming her senses. "Five years," he hissed, his voice for her ears only. "You vanished into thin air. No note. No trace. I searched every corner of this city for you." "I didn't want to be found by a man who told me I was just a weekend distraction," Elena snapped, her eyes flashing. She went to step past him, but his hand shot out, his fingers wrapping around her wrist. His grip wasn't painful, but it was absolute. "You're not leaving. Not until you tell me why you're here. And why you look like you’ve been through hell." Elena looked at his hand, then up at his cold, beautiful face. If she told him she was desperate, he would own her. If she told him about Maya, he would take her. "I'm here for a business investment, Mr. Sterling. Nothing more." Alexander leaned in, his lips inches from her ear. "I don't do business with ghosts, Elena. But I do keep what belongs to me." He looked down at her wrist, then back at her eyes, his gaze narrowing. "You're hiding something. I can feel it in your pulse." Elena pulled her arm back, her heart in her throat. She had to get out. She had to get back to the small apartment where a five-year-old girl with Alexander’s eyes was waiting for her. "Goodbye, Alexander." She turned and ran, ignoring the whispers and the cameras. She didn't see Alexander signal his head of security. She didn't see the way his eyes followed her with a dark, terrifying possessiveness. He didn't know about the child yet. But Alexander Sterling always got his answers. And once he found out he had an heir, he would never let her go.
