Chapter 5

658 Words
Iris' POV Three days— these three days marked the calm before the storm. The morning air brushed my cheeks with freshness. The leafless birches lining the school entrance were so tall that it almost pierced the sky, and the slipping sunlight send waves of warmth that seeped into the deepest parts of my heart. I haven't felt this good in a while. It feels great to be back in shape. It was like any other day, beginning with children chattering in the hallway. I stared at the charmingly placed picture on my desk. There's about to be an addition in our family, and I'd be lying if I say I'm not scared about raising this baby alone. I haven't heard from him, since he left me baffled in the cafe. I'm not sure what I want when it's so obvious that he never really wanted to be in contact with me, but the heart beating in anticipation hardly cares about anything else. I can also say the same for my split rationality arguing to justify his actions, even though I haven't known him for long. It was time for me to get to class so I walk out of the staff room, took a left turn and as luck would have it, I bump into him. Mr. Hyde. Now, before I tell you who Hyde is there is something you gotta know about me. One, I don't tolerate cheating men. Two, I absolutely don't tolerate men who want to get me involved in their cheating affairs. As luck would have it, again, Mr. Hyde belongs to the second category of men. "Miss Iris, hope you're having a great day ", he says with a disgusting smile on his face. I get more annoyed as he gets closer. I take a step back and say, "You too Mr. Hyde". There goes my peaceful day! Why can't he pick another day to harass me. He takes another step forward and pats my hair, I flinch at the sudden movement but instantly move away. "Now there, Iris, you had a little dirt on your hair". "Thank you, Mr. Hyde but I'm late for the class." He's getting more and more presumptuous. He just had to show up at that moment to ruin my perfect day. Who does he even think he is, I bet I'd be a better teaching head than he is, if only he weren't the principal's cousin! That's when I bump into the person I least expected, the man who can both break my heart and mend it in the snap of a finger. The stranger who showed me heaven and hell. The father of my child. What's he doing here? IN MY WORKPLACE? AROUND MY COLLEGUES! Fight or flight kicked in and I did the one thing I could do, I grabbed him by the arm, dragged him to a more secluded place. "Miss Tanya, can you take up my class for the hour? I'm so sorry, something urgent came up. Thank you." I hang up as soon as my class is all set, I don't have to worry about class for the next two hours, since it's break time in an hour. Now it's time to deal with him. Him who send my heart into a slump for three days straight. "Why are you here? And how'd you know where to find me?" I had so many questions, but I went with these first. This man had such an effect that I can barely make up sentences when he's around. " I know you have a lot of questions but first, relax. You shouldn't walk so fast. You know it's not good for you and the baby". He says and these simple words are enough to move my heart, but rational me was disappointed for swooning over a man I know nothing about. He makes me feel like I'm drunk even when I'm fully sober.
