"But kai..."
kelvin interrupted
"it is okay sam it is better you allow them settle themselves who knows they might even get closer than before"
they all nodded and left the cafeteria,as soon as they left the cafeteria the group instinctively split up.
"lucas" sam called, quickening his pace until he was walking beside him.
lucas didn't respond immediately,his hands wrapping around his chest,his gaze fixed to the ground.
"you have been quiet" sam said gently "are you ok"
lucas lifted his head facing sam he couldn't hold his tears anymore,he sobbed silently while hugging sam.
sam consoled him with tears in his eyes also.
"i know you are probably wondering why he said that but it's okay, it is definitely okay to cry but after you are done crying I hope you guys talk it out, he definitely doesn't mean it that way" sam said with a shaky voice.
"why are you all taking his side he was wrong he should admit he was wrong, he has always been on my nerves, I always took it in but not with my family" lucas continued crying.
sam gently rubs lucas back,allowing him to cry for some minutes before speaking again.
"you don't have to keep everything bottled up,lucas sometimes crying is the only way to let your heart breathe."
lucas slowly pulled away,wiping his eyes with the sleeve of his uniform.
"i don't understand him sam... he whispered one minute he is nice and the next his attitude says a different thing."
sam sighed softly "I don't think he intentionally said that"
"then why was he quiet, why couldn't he speak up for himself" lucas aksed his voice breaking.
"maybe" Sam paused....." maybe he didn't know what to say. you know how kai behaves that's just how he is, you guys have to talk it out, we have a competition coming up we shouldn't allow this problem come in between us"
lucas let out a huge sigh and laughed...
"why are you laughing? sam asked with a smile on his face.
"I'm so sorry sam but I couldn't hold it anymore you of all people is taking a competion seriously and you are even advising me, you are so funny"
they both laughed together and left to the class to get their bag.
As sam and lucas disappeared into the classroom another pair walked down the opposite hallway in complete silence
kai kept his eyes on the floor replaying everything that just happened in the cafeteria.every word, every expression on Lucas's face, echoed in his mind.
Tom walked beside him for a few moments before finally breaking the silence.
"you are thinking about him, aren't you?
kai let out a quiet sigh without saying a word
"i knew it" tom smiled knowingly.
kai finally looked at him"did I really mess everything up"
Tom folded his hands "you worsened everything why can't you just hold your temper, I really don't know what to do with you" he paused and looked at kai.
kai responded in a cold tone "I'm just stupid, how could I do that,I couldn't even speak I was just standing like a cool there.
"insulting and punishing yourself won't solve anything,why don't you explain them".tom replied "not to me,to lucas running wouldn't solve anything"
kai remained silent his expression filled with regret.
tom nudged his shoulder lightly
"come on.i know you better than anyone if you didn't care about him you wouldn't be this worried and miserable"
Kai couldn't help but letting out a small laugh
"am I that obvious"
tom grinned
" i will be honest with you, you are not that obvious I'm just observant,you treat him so bad anyone would think Lucas has done something bad to you"
The drive home was unusually quiet,
kai rested his head against the car window,watching the city light blue past as the chauffeur drive.normaly, he would listen to music but today his thoughts refused to settle.
Tom words echoed in his head.
"you treat him badly anyone would think that Lucas has done something bad to you"
kai let out a big sigh.
"Tom wasn't wrong, I did treat him badly but it is not my fault he is just too cute" he smiled to himself.
he knew everything he did was wrong but he couldn't stop himself,the more he liked lucas the more he pushed him away.
The car pulled into the drive way of the large mansion.
"we are home,young master" the chauffeur said poliety.
kai nodded absentmindedly.
"Thanks"
he stepped out of the car and walked inside.
The spacious living room was quiet except the sound of the television.his mother looked up from the sofa and smiled warmly
"you are home sweetheart"
"I'm home mom where is dad I thought he was going to come today"
Kai's mom let out a deep sigh "yes dear he was supposed to come but something important came up I hope you are not bothered about it"
"no I'm not, I'm not a child anymore"
she tilted her head as she noticed the tired expression on my face.
"long day at school?"
kai forced a fake smile.
"yeah ...something like that"
his mother stood up and walked over to him. "you have been distracted lately what's wrong?"
kai hesitated to speak his mind running through various things to say
"ummm.....mom I think it is the competition,the competition is really demanding and I am tired"
his mom folded her hands looking at him with a suspicious look" oh it is the competition, if you are determined to do it you wil or you should speak to your classroom teacher to withdraw. you"
kai immediately shouted"no mom I can do it I believe in myself"
his mom raised her left brows in amazement "are you sure you are not hiding something from me"
"no ma"he replied with a low tone.
she gently patted his shoulders.
"I know you will do it,you are always so hard on yourself."
kai smiled faintly
"i will head upstairs first"
"Don't stay too long dinner would be ready soon"
"i won't"
kai climbed the stairs to his room.As soon as he closed the door beside him,the smile disappeared.
He dropped his school bag on the floor and collapsed onto his bed staring at the ceiling,he was till thinking of how to apologize to lucas.
....."what am I doing"
his voice was barely above a whisper.
he has spent so much time pretending to dislike lucas that even Lucas believes it.
Kai rubbed his hand over his face in frustrations
"what if he really hates me?"
the thought made his chest tighten
he remembered the hurt expression on Lucas's face after the misunderstanding in the cafeteria.
it has stung more than kai wanted to admit.
"i should apologize"
the words slipped out of his mouth before he could stop them.
he immediately scoffed at himself
"as if I would have the courage"
kai let out a bitter laugh
no matter how confident everyone thought he was when it comes to lucas he is a completer coward.
he closed his eyes while trying to get the thought at of his head when his mother called out his name that food was ready,he ran downstairs with a smile on his face.
"mom what did you make"
"I made your favorite sweetheart,let me serve you I hope you are good in school and I heard you are going to the competition with sam,tom, kelvin and the other one that is cute, Lucas"
he coughed and held his chest
"mom we shouldn't talk about that now let's focus on eating"
before kai's mom could say anything the row rumble of a car engine echoed outside the mansion.
kai looked up from his plate
"are we expecting someone?"he asked.
his mother smiled"your father is finally home.
a few seconds later,the front door opened
"I'm home"a deep voice called.
