CHAPTER TEN

NATHAN HAN. “Sure” Ophelia answers, “let me show you” With a nod, I follow her into the house. The house I practically grew up in. When I was much younger, I used to come here alongside my father and I thought that was the best life could get. I didn’t know that years later, I would enter this house and feel nauseous. “The guest restroom is on the other side” her voice pulls me out of my train of thought, “I will just grab something upstairs” “Hmm” After nodding, she turns around and makes her way upstairs. I don’t move until she is gone but I don’t do what I want to do either. I was thinking I would be able to look around but uncle Colleen is not as stupid as he looks. He has CCTV cameras everywhere and I know for a fact that he will be watching now. With a tiny smirk, I turn and make my way towards the restroom. I can genuinely understand his paranoia. I mean, he has done a lot of bad things so it’s only natural that he puts things in check to make sure he isn’t caught unaware. The restroom didn’t have any CCTV cameras but there is one in the hallway. Pulling out my phone, I dial a number and the person from the other end answers almost immediately like he has been waiting for my call. “Hello, sir” “Can you hack into CCTV cameras?” I ask. “Yes sir” he responds, “but it depends on fbs kind of camera and how much time you need. In general, you can only hack the camera for like an hour but if it’s an advanced one, a few at most” “I will only need a few minutes. I will send you the picture and the model type. Let’s work on hacking tomorrow. I do not have much time again” “Okay sir. Do I need to let Mrs August in on this?” For a moment, my mind wanders towards her. August has done a whole lot for me in the past few years but I didn’t want to bug her the more. I couldn’t forget that she has her own life to live and her own family to take care of. She was the one who introduced me to Nicholas, the person I am talking to. Everything that concerns the computer, Nicholas is well aware of it and he has been handy for the past few years—I can’t lie about that. “Don’t bother her with such” I tell him, “just do what you need to do” “Okay sir” After ending the call, I let out another sight before making my way out of the restroom. Ophelia is waiting down the hallway and her eyes light up the moment she sees me. “Sorry, I wasted time” I say as soon as I get to her. “It’s fine. Shall we?” “Hmm, of course” We both make our way out of the house. Her phone keeps ringing but she doesn’t answer, silencing it every single time. “Your boyfriend?” I ask when we get to the car, “are you not picking his calls because I am here?” “Boyfriend?” She scoffs, “I don’t have a boyfriend. And that my dad, he is just being paranoid about everything” “I am guessing he doesn’t want you around me, right?” “That’s the problem” she stops walking and turns to me. I am not even surprised at her outburst, Ophelia has always been talkative and right now, I need every information I can get from her. “He thinks I should be weary of you. You haven’t been around for a long time but he’s weird because we literally grew up together and he is like a father to you” “Eight years can change a man, Ophila” this time I tell her in all sincerity, “so I can understand what goes in his head” “Are you trying to say you are not the same man from years ago?” “Obviously I am not” I answer, “I lost my memory. I am very different from the man you knew so I can understand your father’s feelings. He is only looking out for you and I won’t blame him for that” Ophelia remains silent for a few seconds but her gaze leaves mine. Something is going on in her head and how I badly want to unravel it. “So am I wrong for getting close to you?” She asks after a few minutes of silence. “I am just saying, Ophelia . Do not trust people that easily” She didn’t say anything again, she just nods and makes her way towards the car and I’m no time, I zoom out of the premises. None of us say anything to each other for a few seconds but the woman beside me looks like she has a whole lot to say—not just the opportunity. “You look like you are about to explode” “Can I speak freely, genera?” Her voice rings out and I nod. “Okay. Look, Nathan. I don’t know how eight years went for you but everything I am doing, I am doing because we used to be friends and I want you to regain your memories. If you and my father will keep doing this, then I don’t know what else I should do” “I am only saying you should listen to your father, Sargent” I tell her, “it will do you good” “Do you have something to hide?” She blurts out and my head turns towards her, a questionable look on my face. “What does that mean?” “I understand that eight years can change a man. A man who had seen death and back but then, why did you change so much? What happened to you in eight years that my father is so weary of?” Her question ignites something feral inside of me and I clench my jaw tight. People like Colleen hate to lose and me coming back has proven that he can lose a million times. “Should I tell you a secret?” I ask as I pull up at the side of the road. Every atom of flirtation gone with the wind. “Yes, please” “Whatever happened on that day eight years ago was planned” I told her, “it was all premeditated”
