CHAPTER ONE
NATHAN HAN. EIGHT YEARS AGO. I laid in the pool of my own blood. Several dead bodies scattered everywhere. The ringing in my ear was intense but that was the last thing I could think of at the moment. I was bleeding profusely but I was more concerned about the man who was laid beside me, still and unmoving. “Dad?” I managed to call out to him but he didn’t move, not even a twitch. The pain from the gunshot wound intensified but at this moment, I was more concerned about my father. The bomb blast happened just in the middle of all of us and it was difficult to figure out how a bomb got into the camp. Most especially how the enemies knew my father would be visiting the base today. “Dad?” I called again but in that moment, I heard a car pull up in the distance and hope somehow crept up in my chest. I waited—hoping for anyone to come help us. I was sure not everyone was dead but I couldn’t stand up to help anyone, not when I was bleeding profusely. I waited for a while until I saw some figures coming towards us and my eyes lit up. It was uncle Coleen. He was my father’s best friend and also the deputy commanding general of the American army. I have never been more grateful to see him like this. “Thank God!” I muttered to myself as he came closer, “uncle” I called out to him and he immediately turned his head towards me. For a brief second, he was silent but the look on his face said a whole lot of things. “So you are still alive?” Uncle Colleen asked as he slowly made his way towards me, “I thought you should be dead by now” The realization of his words hit me hard. He wanted me dead, he wanted all of us dead. f**k! He wanted my dad dead. The thought of it made my pain grow but I kept calm. I wanted to know why he would choose to do this to a man who practically grew up together with him. Uncle Coleen and my father grew up together, started life together and even joined the military together. They both started Gearhead together, the biggest automobile company in the whole country and even beyond. They both had everything so i couldn’t really understand why he would want to kill a man who had done nothing to him. “I thought you would be dead like your father now” uncle Coleen continued as he gently squat beside me, “but you are just as adamant as your father: always striving to be the hero in everything” “Why?” This was the only thing I could ask because I genuinely couldn’t wrap my head around it. They were best friends, it was almost impossible to believe. “Why?” Uncle Coleen scoffed, “maybe when we meet in hell. You can ask me that. I need to get out of this place, I should get ready to take over your father’s place” Right in front of me, uncle Coleen pulled out his gun and corked it. “Rest in peace, Nathan!” He smirked hard before pulling the trigger and everything immediately went pitch black—I could only feel myself slipping into utter darkness. ***** Present day. 14th May, 2025. The black Maybach pulls up in front of the building and I slowly climb out, buttoning my site in the process. Today is my swearing in ceremony and trust me, I would rather be anywhere but here. But when I think about the reason why I am here, it fuels my desire the most. “Mr Nathan!” One of them walks up to me with a smile on his face, “we are so glad you can make it for your ceremony” “Hmm” I nod at him before turning towards the building. With each step I take towards the building, the image of my father slowly creeps up in my head. I have done a good job, not thinking about him all these years but today, I chose not to push the thought of it to the back of my head. Coming here signifies his legacy and everything he believes in. Being here today—reminds me of a whole lot of things. “Your uniform has been kept in the changing room. You can change and then meet with the vice chief of staff, he is in a meeting now” “Okay” I nod before another leads me into the dressing room. My uniform is neatly laid out but the only thing I want to do now is rip them into a million pieces and shove them down that bastard’s throat. I closed my eyes for a brief moment, trying to calm my nerves. I am not going to allow the thought of him to ruin this for me. Eight years of my life have gone because of this, I won’t let another slip by. With that confidence, I quickly change into my uniform and the moment I look into the mirror, my breath hitch. A direct replica of my father. It is mine he had come to stand face to face with me. “You can do this” I hear him whisper to me and I let out a sigh. Yes, I can do this but I don’t know if I will be able to keep my cool if I finally find that man. A knock resonates on the door but before I can answer, the door opens up and a familiar figure steps in. My jaw clenches as I turn to him but I kept a neutral face, a small smirk lingering on my lips. “So it is you!” His deep baritone resonates in the room, “Nathan?” “Excuse me.” I cork an eyebrow at him, “do i know you?” “Don’t try to play these games with me,” he continued, “Nathan Han?” “And you must be?” I asked again, folding my hands across my chest, “you walk into my dressing room and you are acting like I am supposed to know you. Am I supposed to?” The old man scoffs as he takes another step further, his eyes full of fury and anger towards me. “So you are alive?” His voice reaches me again, “I thought you would be in hell by now” My eyebrows almost hit my hairline at the level of his audacity but I keep my cool, I am not about to exchange words with him. “Where did you slither out from?” “Look sir” I finally let out a frustrated sigh, “I do not know you and I do not know what you are ok about. I am only here for my ceremony and after that, I get the f**k out of this place. You can keep your stories of remembrance to yourself. I am not interested” The more I talk, the more fury burns inside of me. After eight years, I am finally standing in front of the man who killed my father and his fellow soldiers and as if that was not enough, he shot at me. The only thing I want to do now is put a bullet through his head but it will be an easy way out for him—one I am not willing to give. “If you are done, I will like to leave” Without waiting for his response, I turn around but his next words stop me right in my tracks. “You are about to be the new chief of staff. You must be excited” “Of course not!” I scoff, “I mean I was having the best time of my life in Luxembourg when the letter came in. I would have declined but then I thought about it and said why not. I mean if my little exploits in other countries can be heard by my own country, I might as well make good use of it” “What?” The frown on his face deepens. “And if you were fit for the role, they wouldn’t have asked me. So I will take my leave now” Before he can say a word, I walk off. Being in front of him is making me think a whole lot and I genuinely do not want to do that. Anything I plan to do to him will be based on logic and not emotions. Some people are waiting in front of the door and most of their faces crease into a smile as I make my way towards them. “I will take you to the hall” the officer from earlier tells me, “the vice chief of stall will be available for your ceremony soon” “Hmm” With one final look at the door I had just walked out from, we make our way towards the hall. Now I am back and I am not leaving empty handed. God forbid I do that.
