Emily barely slept that night.
The bouquet remained on the dining table, but the card was locked inside a kitchen drawer. Every time she closed her eyes, the words returned.
Beautiful success... while it lasts.
She had worked too hard to rebuild her life.
She refused to let fear control her again.
The next morning, she prepared breakfast while trying to act normally.
Noah looked up from his cereal.
"Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"You look tired."
Emily smiled gently.
"I just didn't sleep very well."
Nora reached across the table and placed her tiny hand over Emily's.
"Don't worry."
"I'll protect you."
Emily laughed softly despite herself.
"You already do."
After breakfast, she walked the twins to Sunshine Preschool.
As always, Noah held Nora's hand while they crossed the street.
