Chapter 1: The End of a Marriage
The rain fell steadily against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Kingston Mansion, casting gray shadows across the silent living room. Emily Carter sat on the edge of the sofa, her fingers tightly clutching a brown envelope that had been lying on the coffee table for an hour. She didn't need to open it again. She already knew every word inside. Divorce Agreement. Five years. Five years of marriage had been reduced to a few sheets of paper and a signature. She lowered her eyes, forcing back the tears threatening to fall. The front door opened. Heavy footsteps echoed through the mansion. Emily looked up. Adrian Kingston walked inside, still dressed in his tailored black suit. His expression was as cold and unreadable as ever. Even after five years of marriage, she could never tell what he was thinking. His assistant followed behind him, placing another folder on the table before quietly leaving. Silence settled between husband and wife. Adrian loosened his tie and glanced at the divorce papers. "You've read them." It wasn't a question. Emily nodded slowly. "I have." Another long silence followed. She searched his face, hoping—just once—to find hesitation. Regret. Anything. There was nothing. Her lips curved into a bitter smile. "So..." "This is really the end?" Adrian kept his gaze on her. "It's for the best." Those four words pierced her heart more sharply than any insult ever could. "For the best?" she whispered. "I spent five years trying to be a good wife." "I learned your favorite meals." "I waited every night for you to come home." "I celebrated every birthday alone because you were always working." "I convinced myself that one day you'd finally look at me the way a husband should." She laughed softly, though tears filled her eyes. "I guess I was foolish." Adrian's fingers tightened almost imperceptibly. "You deserve someone better." Emily looked at him in disbelief. "You don't get to decide what I deserve." Her voice trembled. "I only ever wanted you." For the first time that evening, Adrian looked away. His jaw tightened. "I'm sorry." Emily froze. In five years... Those were the first genuine words she'd heard from him. Unfortunately... They came too late. She took a deep breath. "If I refuse to sign?" "You know it won't change anything." His calm tone shattered the last hope she had been holding onto. Emily closed her eyes. She remembered the day they married. She had been twenty years old. She believed love could grow. She believed kindness could melt even the coldest heart. Instead... She spent five years living beside a man who treated her more like a responsibility than a wife. Slowly, she picked up the pen. Her hand shook violently. Adrian watched in silence. She looked at him one last time. "If I sign..." "Will you ever think about me again?" The question lingered in the room. Adrian didn't answer immediately. His silence became the answer. Emily smiled sadly. "I understand." She lowered the pen. Her signature appeared neatly across the bottom of the page. Emily Carter. No... Not for much longer. She slid the papers toward Adrian. "It's done." He looked at the signature for several seconds before collecting the documents. His expression remained unreadable. "Thank you." Emily almost laughed. Thank you. That was all. No apology. No explanation. No attempt to stop her. Five years... Reduced to two simple words. She stood. "I'll pack my things tonight." "You don't have to rush." "There isn't much to pack." Her smile was painfully calm. "Most of this house was never mine." She walked upstairs. Every step felt heavier than the last. Inside the bedroom, she opened the wardrobe. Half of it was empty. Just like their marriage. She folded a few dresses into a suitcase. A sweater. Some books. Family photographs. Then she reached the bedside drawer. Inside was a small velvet box. She opened it. Their wedding rings rested side by side. She gently picked up hers. The diamond sparkled under the bedroom light. Five years ago, Adrian had slipped it onto her finger without even smiling. Back then, she convinced herself he was simply shy. Now she understood. He had never wanted this marriage. A tear rolled down her cheek. She placed the ring back into the box. "I'm letting you go," she whispered. An hour later, Emily carried her suitcase downstairs. Adrian was standing near the entrance, speaking quietly with his assistant. The moment he saw her, the conversation stopped. Emily placed a key on the table. "I've left everything else." Adrian nodded once. "I'll have someone drive you." "No." She forced a polite smile. "I can leave by myself." Without waiting for another word, she pulled her suitcase toward the door. Her hand paused on the handle. She wanted him to stop her. Just once. Just once... Say her name. Tell her not to leave. Tell her they could try again. The mansion remained silent. Emily closed her eyes. Then she opened the door and stepped into the pouring rain. The cold wind hit her face immediately. She didn't look back. Not even once. ... An hour later. Emily checked into a small apartment she had rented weeks ago. Perhaps... A part of her had already known today would come. She placed her suitcase beside the bed before suddenly feeling dizzy. Her vision blurred. She grabbed the edge of the table to steady herself. "Ngh..." She frowned. She had been unusually tired lately. Her appetite had changed. And... Her monthly cycle was late. Emily slowly looked toward the pharmacy bag sitting on the counter. Inside was something she had bought two days ago but never found the courage to use. A pregnancy test. Her heartbeat quickened. "No..." "It can't be..." With trembling hands, she picked up the box. Minutes later... She stood silently inside the bathroom. The test rested on the sink. Time seemed to stop. One minute. Two minutes. Three. Then... Two bright pink lines appeared. Emily's breathing caught. Her eyes widened. "No..." Her hand instinctively covered her mouth. Tears streamed down her face. "I'm..." "I'm pregnant..." She stared at the result in complete disbelief. A tiny life. No... Maybe more than one. A child created during the final days of a broken marriage. Her first thought wasn't fear. It was Adrian. She reached for her phone with shaking hands. "I have to tell him." Before she could dial his number, loud music suddenly interrupted the silence. The television in the living room turned on automatically. A breaking news banner flashed across the screen. "Breaking News!" Emily looked up. The reporter spoke excitedly. "Kingston Group CEO Adrian Kingston has officially announced his engagement during tonight's charity gala!" Emily froze. The camera shifted. There he was. Adrian. Standing beneath dazzling lights. Beside him stood a breathtakingly beautiful woman in an elegant silver gown. Sophia Bennett. In front of hundreds of cameras... Adrian gently took Sophia's hand. Then... He slipped a dazzling diamond ring onto her finger. Applause erupted through the ballroom. Emily's phone slipped from her hand. It crashed onto the floor. The pregnancy test followed a second later. Shattering against the cold bathroom tiles. She stared blankly at the smiling man on the television. The man who had been her husband only hours ago. A broken laugh escaped her lips before it dissolved into uncontrollable sobs. She wrapped both arms around herself as if trying to shield the tiny life growing inside her. Through tears, she whispered, "You'll never know..." "...that you're going to be a father." Outside her apartment window, across the street, a black sedan remained parked in the darkness. A man lowered his camera after taking several photographs. One picture captured Emily's tear-streaked face through the apartment window. Another captured the shattered pregnancy test on the bathroom floor. The man smiled faintly before making a phone call. "It's confirmed," he said. "She's pregnant." A calm voice answered from the other end. "Good." "Keep watching her." "Whatever happens..." "Don't let the Kingston heir disappear."
