Even though the pack house was only down the street a long black limo was parked outside of our house to pick up my father and myself to take us to the pack house. My mother kissed my cheek and tucked a loose curl behind my ear as we stood in front of the open limo door. A stray tear escaped her eyes as she smiled at me softly.
"Eden..." she started and then dropped her voice to barely a whisper "I know that we've trained you for this, but please be careful flower. I had hoped better things for you, but sometimes duty to the pack must come before our own happiness and dreams" She looked me in the eyes with a deep sadness reflecting back from her own. She gripped me into a tight hug and whispered "I'm sorry" into my ear before quickly letting go and turning away from me, walking back into my childhood home.
My father motioned for me to get into the limo and he walked around and slid into the other side next to me. An Omega for the Alphas shut the door behind me, and on my old life. We rode silently in the backseat but my father gripped my hand and looked out the window sadly refusing to look my way.
We arrived at the pack house in a few short minutes but the ride felt long and tense. The limo pulled into the long half circle driveway in front of the massive pack house. I'd been in the pack house many times before but today it loomed over me, and felt domineering. The limo driver got out and opened my father's door and he quickly let go of my hand and got out. I took a deep breath to steady myself, and took the hand that was now stretching inside the limo to help me out.
I had grabbed the hand I saw without a thought but when our fingers touched an electric shock ran through my body. Nadine started to stir from her previous silence and she seemed to be bouncing around in my head. What was happening?
The body that was attached to the hand moved in front of the door and he bent down to look at me still sitting inside the limo now gripping his hand as electricity sparked all over my skin. When I looked up I was met with the most beautiful hazel eyes I had ever seen, swirls of grey and green and chocolate. His eyes opened wide when he looked at my face and mouthed the word Mate.
Recognition flashed across my face when I realized what was happening. This man, whoever he was, was my fated mate. This could not be a worse situation. Panic grew on his face and his body tensed when he realized what was happening and who I was. He quickly ducked further into the limo and put his mouth to my ear, sending a tidal wave of sparks through me.
"Do not say anything, quickly pull yourself together love and pretend nothing is happening, do you hear me?" his tone was urgent and stressed and as quickly as he had put his lips to my ear he pulled away leaving nothing but the hand I was still holding.
This can't be happening, this can't. Mate, Mate! Nadine was chanting inside my head excitedly. Calm down Nadine, we cannot do this right now. We cannot have him! I snapped at her, almost too harshly and she whimpered and then grew silent again inside my head. I straightened my dress and hair as fast as I could and then carefully stepped out of the limo.
There was a large gathering of people outside the limo awaiting my arrival. I glanced quickly out the corner of my eyes to get a look at the man whose hand I still held. He was tall, at least 6'3, and all muscle. His tanned skin complimented his short deep brown hair, and stubble covered the lower half of his face. He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. Butterflies formed where my knots of anxiety had been before and my head felt dizzy when I got a whiff of his delicious scent, a mix of fresh cedar and pine, with a hint of a coffee ground smell. I inhaled it deeply and closed my eyes but quickly snapped them back open and looked at my father instead trying to ignore the man next to me.
The man remained stiffly beside me in a military-like stance except for the one arm stretched out to assist me out of the car. I began to walk forward and he matched my pace. I looked up to see the Alpha family on the bottom step of the large wrap around porch awaiting my arrival. I walked to them as gracefully as possible with my head high, but my breath caught when I saw Alex standing in the middle.
It had been a few years since I had seen him since he was older and had finished high school and began his life in depth Alpha training separately from everyone else. He was tall and looked foreboding his arms crossed over his ripped chest. His jet black hair was slicked back but a few stray pieces in the front were over his forehead. His eyes were a piercing green, and looked like they would bore a hole through your soul if you looked long enough.
The man next to me was now guiding me to them our arms still connected and outstretched. As we approached he bowed to the Alphas low, in respect, and I curtsied in response. Alex moved off the step above us and extended his hand out to me and the man tensed a little, but subtly enough that I think I was the only one who noticed. I could feel anger seeping out of him but his face reminded calm and emotionless as he placed my hand into Alex's.
When our hands released from one another I had to force my body not to recoil at the coldness of Alex's hand that now replaced the warmth and electricity of this other man's. Alex looked down at me, a blank and uncaring expression plastered on but something dark seemed to be lurking in his eyes.
"Welcome Eden. Welcome to your new home." His face didn't match the words he spoke as he looked at me with almost anger. "Thank you for your safe escort of my Luna, Chase." He spoke to the man beside me with a curt nod. Chase, the name started to echo in my mind, my mates name was Chase.
We walked up the stairs to the pack house and inside into the large foyer with two grand spiraling staircases to either side.
"Our floor is to the right side." Alex instructed as he led me upwards. My wolf was now pacing again, agitated to be walking away from our mate. I wanted to calm her but I truly had no words to say.
Goddess help us now, if the Alpha realized what had just happened we were doomed. There was no telling what punishment he would have in-store for us.
