CHAPTER SIX

1947 Words
Dulce Madden Leo and I had been texting constantly from the day we met, like about a week ago. We were getting to know each other better, he would tell me about his campus life, how much he enjoyed his science lessons, he even suggested that I join the University of California so that we would be in close proximity together and I was falling deep for him so I agreed. The university was close enough from home and I would be close to my mother still, even though I rarely see her these days. “Dulce!” Leon yelled as he slammed the book on the table. I looked at his startled, “what?” I asked, confused. “You are supposed to be tutoring me, I’m sure Leo could wait for about an hour or two.” He stated. I sighed, “you’re right. But it’s just that with his classes and all we never really get a lot of time to talk.” I said as I put my phone aside. “Maybe you should let him miss you and not talk to him all the time.” Leon suggested. I took a deep breath, “you’re right. Let’s focus on this.” But then my phone buzzed and I looked at it then at Leon. I went to look at it when Leon grabbed it. “Hey!” I yelled. “You’ll get it once you and I are done here.” He said as he pocketed it. My eyebrows creased, “since when do you care about studying?” I asked as I narrowed my eyes at him. “Uh… it’s my senior year and I want to keep my university options open just in case I can’t get a slot through sports.” He replied. I laughed, “you are the same guy who used to tell me how you have a rich dad who could get you into any college?” “Then I started studying with you and I thought that maybe it would be nice if I actually put in some effort into my studies.” He said in a low tone as he looked at the book. “Aww… you’d think that I actually inspired you.” I mocked him. “Whatever. Let’s just finish up here. I’m sure you have a date to get to with Leo.” He said. Which was the weird thing, he has never invited me out on a date. It’s like most of the time we spend is just us talking over the phone. He kept saying that he would put something together for us but he just never does. I smiled meekly at Leon, “yeah sure.” I said. I didn’t know if my face showed my disappointment but I didn’t want to think about but I felt like he was ashamed of me and didn’t want to be seen around with a high school girl. I was counting the days to when I finished high school which was in a few weeks. The day had finally come to an end and I was walking Leon outside. “Hey, our school is having its senior prom, I was wondering if you wanted to come with me?” He asked. I chuckled, “you want me to come with you to your senior prom? Don’t you have someone else in your school who wants to go with you?” I asked. He sighed, “I do but I wanted to go with you. You know with us spending a lot of time with you, I feel like I could be weird with you and I wouldn’t even have to dress up, you know.” He joked. I laughed softly, “it depends when it is. Because our school would be having a prom of its own an I would like to make an appearance.” I replied. “With Leo?” He asked. “I don’t know if it’s with him. I haven’t asked him yet.” I replied. Leon cleared his voice, “it’s on the last week of the month.” He replied. I smiled, “lucky you. Ours is on the second last week of the month.” “So, is that a yes?” He asked with a smile. I flipped my long brown curly hair playfully, “you gave me no choice but to grace you with my presence.” I replied. We both laughed. He stepped into his car and opened the passenger window, “I’ll pick you up and we could shop for dresses for both proms. My treat of course because of the rich dad and all.” He joked. I smiled, “I guess you’ll be gracing me with your presence then.” “I guess I will.” He replied, “oh before I forget.” He handed me my phone back. “I had forgotten about this.” I chuckled. “I’m sure now Leo misses you more than ever.” Leon said, “have a good night.” I waved at him as he drove off. I looked at my phone and there were a few texts from Leo asking me where I was. I smirked, I guess Leon gives good relationship advices. It felt great to missed, something Leo didn’t seem to do. I woke up the next morning and got ready for school. I walked out to find my mother in the kitchen preparing some breakfast. “Oh wow, you still live here? I thought you moved out.” I said as I walked to the dining table. “And good morning to you too sweetie.” She placed a kiss on my head and a plate of pancakes. “But on a serious note, you never spend time in the apartment anymore. It seems you and Mr. Langley are getting pretty serious.” I said as I enjoyed the pancakes. My mother smiled as she sat in front of me, “that’s something I wanted to talk to you about.” She said. “You want to talk to me about your relationship with the father of the guy I’m tutoring?” I asked, “no thank you.” My mother chuckled, “not that but it is somehow related to that.” “Is it anything that would gross me out of enjoying my breakfast?” I asked. She shook her head. “Okay then. Tell me what it is.” I stated as I stuffed my mouth with pancakes. “Miles offered to open a little school for me so I want to quit my job.” She blurted out and I almost choked on my pancakes. “Are you being serious?” I asked as I covered my full mouth. She nodded excitedly. “I told him that I would ask you what you think first before I make any decision. So, what do you think?” She asked. I swallowed the food in my mouth, “he just offered to open an entire school for you?” “Technically, it wouldn’t be like a school. More like a place I could tutor students after school. Like a mini school.” She replied. “I would help students who have a hard time in class as I would have personal connection with them.” She explained. I thought it was a great opportunity as I thought a public high school wasn’t a place for her. “Do you think it would make you happy?” I asked. “It would make me very happy.” She said, “and it’s a good opportunity now that you’d be going to college soon.” “Then I say go and do it.” I stated. “Really?” She asked. “Yeah!” “Good because I already kind of put in my two weeks.” She blurted out as I hugged her. My elation turned to hurt, “so you just made me think I was helping you but you were already going to do it?” I asked. “I’m sorry sweetie but he didn’t even offer. He just said that he had started it for me and I was so excited I immediately said yes.” She said with an embarrassed look on her face, “I hope you aren’t mad at me sweetie.” I sighed, “I’m not mad. It’s your life and it is a great opportunity.” I replied, “now I need to get to school and work for my big opportunity.” “Here you go.” She handed me the keys to her car. I looked at her, “what do you want me to do with these?” I asked. She sighed, “I know I haven’t necessarily been the mother of the year but I think it’s time you start driving to and from school. You will soon be going to college and you’ll need to start putting your driver’s license into use.” I just hugged her, “you are and always have been the best mother a girl could ask for.” She patted me on the back, “now go to school you don’t be late.” She shooed me off. I got to school and the first person I saw was my one and only school bully. I sighed, “today isn’t the day Emilia.” I stated. But she just pushed me aside and walked past me. I guess she was too busy running for the school prom queen to bug me today. Claudia approached me excitedly, “today is the day I get to remove my braces!” She shrieked, “I’m so glad that I don’t have to wear this to prom. Maybe then I could find a date to the prom.” I smiled, “you are beautiful Claudia, I’m sure a lot of guys would love to ask you to the prom.” I assured her. “Has anyone asked you to the prom?” She asked. I chuckled, “funny enough, someone did but not our school’s prom.” “Which school?” Claudia asked. “Mystical High School.” I replied. “Whoa, that school is for the rich kids. I didn’t know you knew someone from there.” She said. “It’s just this guy I’m tutoring. No big deal.” I said with a shrug, “what I’m worried about is asking the college guy I’m seeing to come to the prom. I don’t know if he’ll accept.” “Have you asked him?” Claudia asked. “I haven’t.” I said in a dejected tone, “I just don’t want to risk him having to say now.” I confessed. “Think positively. What if he says yes?” Claudia asked. I looked at my phone but I still couldn’t. I handed Claudia the phone, “you text him and if he says no just delete the text.” I said. This was my first relationship and I was very delicate about it. I have never opened up to a guy the way I opened up to Leo. I now have the constant worry that he might break my heart. Claudia chuckled, “at least you have someone to ask. I have no one.” “Who have you asked?” I asked her. “Uh… no one.” She admitted. I laughed softly, “maybe you should take our own advice and be positive.” I said as she hit me playfully. We had first period together so we entered the class and took our seats.
