The Secret Behind His Lies
Episode 1: The Message
Emma Carter had always believed that lies were easy to recognize.
A trembling voice. A pair of restless eyes. A smile that appeared a second too late.
She had learned to notice the smallest details about people. It was one of the few things she was good at.
But Adrian Blake was different.
He could look directly into her eyes and make the truth feel like a lie.
And somehow, that frightened her more than anything else.
At twenty-four, Emma had finally landed an internship at Blake International, one of the most powerful companies in the city. She had promised herself that she would focus on her career, stay out of trouble, and never get distracted by a man.
Then she met Adrian Blake.
Twenty-nine years old. Brilliant. Wealthy. Arrogant.
And completely impossible to understand.
As the company's CEO, Adrian was famous for his cold personality and ruthless business decisions. Employees lowered their voices when he walked past. Even senior executives seemed nervous in his presence.
Yet, whenever Emma entered a room, she sometimes caught him watching her.
Not with affection.
With recognition.
As if he knew something about her that she had long forgotten.
---
It was almost nine in the evening when Emma finally left the office.
Rain covered the city streets, turning the lights into blurred reflections on the pavement. She hurried toward the bus stop, grateful that her first exhausting week at work was finally over.
Her phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
Unknown: Emma Carter. Do you want to know why Adrian Blake hired you?
She stopped walking.
Her fingers hovered over the screen.
Emma: Who is this?
The reply arrived immediately.
Unknown: Check your email. And whatever you do, don't trust him.
A strange uneasiness settled in her stomach.
Emma opened her email. There was a new message with no subject line and no sender name she recognized.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed a young woman standing beside a man outside an old country house. The woman's face was partially hidden by her hair, but something about her seemed strangely familiar.
The man was unmistakably Adrian Blake.
He looked younger in the photograph, perhaps twenty-three or twenty-four. His expression was serious, and one hand rested on the woman's shoulder.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written four words:
SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN.
Emma stared at the image.
Who was the woman?
And why had someone sent this to her?
Another message appeared.
Unknown: Go to the old Blake estate tonight. Room 17. You'll find the truth.
Emma should have deleted everything.
She should have gone home.
Instead, she looked up at the dark sky and made a decision she would soon regret.
---
The old Blake estate stood beyond the edge of the city, surrounded by towering trees and an iron fence that had begun to rust. It looked abandoned, though a single light glowed in an upstairs window.
Emma pushed open the gate.
It creaked loudly in the silence.
Inside, dust covered the furniture, and the air smelled of rain and old wood. She followed a narrow corridor until she found a staircase leading to the second floor.
Room 17 was at the end.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, she discovered a desk, a broken mirror, and dozens of photographs pinned to the walls.
Every photograph showed Adrian.
Some were recent. Others appeared to be years old.
But one photograph made Emma's blood run cold.
It showed a little girl standing in front of the same country house.
The girl had Emma's eyes.
Her exact eyes.
Beneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
YOU WERE HERE BEFORE, EMMA.
A floorboard creaked behind her.
She spun around.
Adrian Blake stood in the doorway, his face pale with anger—or fear.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then he stepped inside and closed the door.
"You're not supposed to be here," he said quietly.
Emma held up the photograph with shaking hands.
"Who is she?"
Adrian's gaze fell to the picture. Something changed in his expression, a c***k in the cold mask he wore so effortlessly.
"Where did you get that?"
"Answer me!"
He moved closer.
"Emma, listen to me carefully. Whatever you saw tonight, forget it."
"Why? Because you're hiding something?"
His jaw tightened.
"You have no idea what you're getting involved in."
"Then tell me!"
For one brief moment, his eyes softened.
"I can't."
Emma stepped back, hurt and furious.
"Then don't ever expect me to trust you."
She reached for the door, but Adrian's next words stopped her.
"Emma."
She turned.
He looked at her as though he were watching someone disappear for the second time.
"Three years ago," he whispered, "someone died because of a secret your family kept."
Emma couldn't breathe.
"My family?"
Before he could say anything more, her phone vibrated again.
Another message from the unknown number.
Unknown: He's lying. Ask him what happened to the girl in the photograph.
Emma slowly raised her eyes to Adrian.
For the first time, the powerful CEO looked genuinely afraid.
And then the lights went out.
In the darkness, someone whispered directly behind her.
"Welcome back, Emma."
