Cathryn James never imagined her life would become a nightmare of impossible choices. To save her family’s business from ruin, she’s forced into a loveless contract marriage with the ruthless billionaire, San Antonio—a man who sees her as nothing more than a pawn in his empire. Trapped in a world of wealth and cruelty, Cathryn longs for an escape.

One fateful night before her wedding, she shares a passionate encounter with a stranger—Pedro—a man who makes her feel alive in a way she’s never known. But when the haze clears, she learns a devastating truth: Pedro is San Antonio’s estranged son.

Now bound to one man by duty and drawn to another by desire, Cathryn finds herself pregnant with Pedro’s child, a secret that threatens to destroy everything. As her life spirals into chaos, betrayal strikes from the unlikeliest of places, and San Antonio's fury knows no bounds.

Now Cathryn must face her darkest fears and find the strength to break free from the powerful forces determined to control her life—or be consumed by them. Will she reclaim her future and the love she truly desires, or will the shadows of this forbidden love destroy her once and for all?

chapter1
ONE NIGHT, ONE STRANGER Cathryn James sat at the bar, the noise of the crowded room swirling around her but barely registering. She stared at the empty bottle in front of her, then raised a finger, signaling for another. Her voice was barely a whisper, lost in the pulse of the music and the clinking of glasses. “Another bottle, please,” she mumbled, though no one heard her. The argument with her father still echoed in her mind, his final words stabbing at her like daggers: "It’s either you marry San Antonio, or you’re on your own. I won’t support you anymore." The weight of his ultimatum had driven her here, to a dimly lit bar filled with strangers. The laughter and carefree chatter provided temporary relief, but the pain was too deep to drown. The bartender, noticing her silent plea, handed her another bottle. She barely acknowledged him before gulping down half the contents in one go. Whispers from a nearby table floated toward her, a group of women judging her for drinking straight from the bottle while dressed in nothing but a simple white slip and black flats. She didn’t care. She hadn’t planned to go out, hadn’t dressed up for anything. Her long black hair fell messily over her shoulders, and the chill in the air made her n*****s hard beneath the thin fabric, drawing unwanted stares from the surrounding men. She took another swig, her eyes catching the familiar figure of Mia as she entered the bar. Mia, her best friend since high school, was the kind of person who lit up a room. With her vibrant personality, killer curves, and that radiant smile, Mia always drew attention wherever she went. She made her way over, her voice cutting through the haze. “Traffic was hell! I’m so pissed”, Mia complained as she plopped onto the stool beside Cathryn. Cathryn handed her the bottle without a word, her mind still lost in the argument with her father. Mia took a swig, seemingly unfazed by her friend’s silence, and within minutes was on the dance floor, moving her body to the rhythm of the music, drawing the eyes of every man in the bar. Cathryn remained seated, her eyes following Mia’s wild movements, but her thoughts elsewhere. The music intensified, the crowd swelled, and soon Mia was lost in the sea of people. The night dragged on, the bar slowly thinning out, but Cathryn stood, clutching her bottle like it was the only thing keeping her anchored. By 11:45 p.m., the bar was nearly empty. The buzz of alcohol had taken full control, and Cathryn’s vision blurred as she stared at her half-empty bottle. "That’s enough.” A deep, firm voice suddenly broke through the fog. She looked up, blinking against the haze. A tall man stood in front of her—broad shoulders, dark eyes, and a commanding presence. He was dressed in a crisp suit, his dark hair slightly tousled, giving him a casual yet polished look. It was Pedro, though she didn’t know his name yet. Pedro had been watching her from across the bar. He had come in with a business partner earlier but had spent the last hour observing her, unable to ignore how lost she seemed. Something about her vulnerability tugged at him in a way he couldn’t explain. When he saw that nearly everyone had left, and she was still glued to the same spot, taking drink after drink, he couldn’t just walk away. He gently took the bottle from her hand. “Hey, are you okay?” he asked, placing a steadying hand on her arm. But there was no response. “I could drop you off at your place if you don’t mind.” "I just wanted to… forget,” she murmured, her voice trailing off. “Forget what?” Pedro almost asked, but he stopped himself. It wasn’t his place to pry into the troubles of a stranger. “Come on, let me get you out of here,” he said gently, guiding her towards the exit. She leaned heavily on him, her steps unsteady, but she followed without protest. “Where do you stay?” He asked again, but the wind only brought him the silence of the night. Pedro cursed silently. Taking her home was out of the question if she couldn’t tell him where it was. The only other option was to find a hotel nearby. “It’s okay,” he reassured her. “We’ll find a place where you can rest.” She nodded weakly, clutching his arm as if it were a lifeline. A ride later, they arrived at a luxurious hotel. Pedro carried her on his arm through the lobby, his mind racing with a mix of concern and guilt. He wasn’t sure how this situation would look to an outsider, but he couldn’t just leave her on her own. In the room, he helped her onto the bed. “I’ll get you some water,” he said, stepping away to pour a glass from the minibar. When he returned, she was lying on the bed, her eyes closed, but she wasn’t asleep. She looked so calm, so vulnerable lying there, and he felt a pang of protectiveness that he couldn’t quite explain. “Here, drink this. It’ll help.” Pedro handed her a glass of water. She opened her eyes and reached out, her fingers brushing against his as she took the glass. She drank slowly her eyes still lightly closed. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice soft and laced with something he couldn’t quite place. Pedro smiled gently. Just try to get some sleep, okay?” Pedro wanted to head back home. He had a long day from meeting to meeting, but fate had a different plan for him. Just as he moved to stand, Cathryn grabbed his arm, her grip surprisingly strong. “Don’t go,” she said, her eyes pleading. He froze, caught off guard by the desperation in her voice. “I’ll stay until you fall asleep,” he promised, trying to keep his tone soothing. But she shook her head, her fingers tightening around his arm. “No, I don’t want to be alone,” she whispered, her voice trembling with unspoken emotion. Before he could react, she pulled him closer, her lips brushing against his. The kiss was soft at first, tentative, but there was an urgency behind it that quickly grew. Pedro’s mind screamed at him to stop, to pull away, but his body betrayed him. He deepened the kiss, his hand sliding into her hair as he pressed her against the bed. She responded eagerly, pulling him closer until there was no space between them. The smell of her perfume, the warmth of her skin, and the taste of her lips—it was all too much. He couldn’t resist her, not when she was so close, so vulnerable, and yet so full of desire. Without thinking, he gave in. Clothes were discarded in a haze, and soon they were both lost in each other, their bodies moving together in a dance that felt both inevitable and forbidden. Beside him, she slept peacefully, her breathing soft and even. He looked at her, lying naked. Her beauty was immeasurable, her face radiating a childlike innocence. A knot of guilt enveloped his mind again. He didn’t even know her name, and yet he had crossed a line he could never uncross.
