Chapter 1: Alicia's POV
“Please tell me you’re joking.” The words leave my mouth before I can stop them. They sound weak. Unsteady. Nothing like how I usually speak. The doctor doesn’t laugh. He just sits there, hands folded on the desk, looking at me like he’s waiting for something to settle. Like I’m the one who needs to catch up. “I assure you, Miss Alicia,” he says carefully, “this is not a joke.” I stare at him. Then I laugh. A short, sharp sound. It doesn’t even feel like it came from me. “Okay… okay, this is funny,” I say, shaking my head. “Pregnant? Me? That’s the joke, right? Because there’s no way. Absolutely no way.” Still nothing. The nurse standing by the door shifts uncomfortably. The doctor’s eyes don’t leave my face. And slowly… that laugh dies in my throat. “I think you’re mistaken,” I say, my voice tightening. “You mixed up results. It happens, right? So just check again.” “We already did,” he replies. My chest feels tight. “No, you didn’t check properly,” I push, standing up. “Because I’m not pregnant. I can’t be pregnant.” Why does my voice sound like that? Like I’m trying to convince myself. “I’m a virgin.” The room goes quiet. Dead quiet. “I come from a Christian home,” I continue, the words rushing out now. “I made a vow when I was eight. I don’t sleep around. I don’t—this is not me. So whatever test you ran? It’s wrong.” The doctor exhales slowly, rubbing the back of his neck. That’s when I notice it. He’s nervous. Why is he nervous? “I understand this is difficult to process—” “No,” I cut him off sharply. “What I understand is that you people made a mistake and now you’re trying to convince me I’m pregnant when I’m clearly not.” I grab my bag from the chair, ready to leave. I’ve had enough of this nonsense. But the moment I turn, the nurse steps in front of the door. Blocking it. I blink. “Excuse me?” “Miss Alicia…” she starts, her voice tight, “you can’t leave just yet.” I stare at her like she’s lost her mind. “I can’t leave?” I repeat slowly. “You think this is funny? Move.” She doesn’t. Something cold slides down my spine. I turn back to the doctor. “What is going on?” He hesitates. That hesitation? That’s what breaks something inside me. “Explain,” I say. My voice is quieter now. Dangerous. The doctor swallows. “There was… an error,” he begins. “A mix-up in the system.” My heart starts beating faster. “What kind of mix-up?” I ask. “One of our nurses mistakenly swapped patient files,” he continues. “You were registered under a different procedure.” The room tilts slightly. I grab the edge of the table. “What procedure?” I whisper. The doctor looks at me. And for the first time, I see it clearly. Fear. “You were inseminated,” he says. Silence. My ears ring. “I’m sorry,” he adds quickly. “It was never our intention—” “Inseminated?” I repeat, the word tasting foreign on my tongue. “As in… artificial insemination?” He nods. Something inside my chest cracks open. “No…” I shake my head, stepping back. “No, that’s not possible. That’s not possible.” My breathing picks up. “You’re lying.” “I’m not.” “You’re lying!” I snap, my voice rising. “You’re telling me I walked into this hospital for a simple checkup and you people just—what? Injected me with someone’s sperm?” The nurse looks like she’s about to cry. The doctor doesn’t answer immediately. That silence is enough. “Oh my God…” I whisper, my hand going to my stomach. My stomach. There’s… something in there. “No… no, no, no…” My legs feel weak. The nurse rushes forward, guiding me back into the chair before I collapse. My head spins. My future flashes before my eyes. My parents. My school. My scholarship. Everything. Ruined. “This can be fixed,” the doctor says quickly. “We can schedule a termination immediately. You won’t have to pay—” “Stop,” I snap. My head jerks up. “I’m not killing a baby because you made a mistake.” He stiffens. “Then you need to understand the situation,” he says, his voice dropping. Something about his tone makes my stomach twist. “What situation?” I ask. The doctor hesitates. Then finally— “The donor,” he says slowly, “is not just anyone.” I frown. “What does that even mean?” He looks me straight in the eye. “The father of the child you’re carrying…” My heart pounds. “…is Maxim Andreas.” Everything goes still. My breath catches. No. I shake my head slowly, panic flooding my chest. “That’s not possible,” I whisper. But the look on his face? Says it all. Maxim Andreas baby.... I am so dead
