Caleb's POV
I walked downstairs to find Damien waiting for me patiently while talking to one of the servants.
“I’m glad you could make it, let’s go into my office” Without replying he followed me as I turned to make my way, my serious demeanor taking over. I knew after his earlier incident that Damien was being cautious, weary of the fate he might suffer if he was not.
As we got in and sat down, I noticed him curiously looking at me. I knew he was impatient to know why I had called him here just to talk about Lily. I quietly poured two whiskies on the rocks and handed him his glass before swirling my cup around and taking a sip. It was one of the human drinks I had come to rather enjoy during my time among them.
Damien spoke up, his curiosity getting the better of him. “So, is everything alright with the girl?” He was straight to business, skipping the time wasting of pleasantries. I liked it, it was nice to see he was focused.
“ The girl’s name is Lily and she is fine.” I courtly replied before I continued. “There is an angel around her and I need you to follow him for me. He is up to something and I am weary of him. He is using her as a cover and I would like to know what he has planned.” I slightly lied to Damien not wanting him to know that Mikes presence most likely had something to do with Lily. It was better instead to say he was using her as cover so that no one looked into her. I needed to ensure her safety until I had more information.
“Does it matter?” His reply caused me to immediately turn around and I stared at him intently, giving him a chance to correct himself. “I just mean, it’s angel business Caleb. You aren’t a part of Heaven anymore. Should we really get involved?” I knew he was right to be concerned but I needed him to follow Mike. It was the only way I could think of to find out what was really going on.
“While you are following the angel,” I continued, “I will be following Lily. We should be able to find out what is going on fairly easily. There must be a reason he chose her as his cover and I intend to find out.” I hoped Damien believed my words and didn’t decide to investigate further. I knew his loyalties lied with me but I could never be too careful.
“It’s probably just an investigation into a demon or something. Caleb you know the risk of getting involved in angel business. We could face death if we interfere “ he reasoned. I tried to remain calm with his reasoning but my mood grew worse hearing him talk. I was his leader and he should be listening to me.
“Yes Damien, I know the risks. I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important so you just need to trust what I am doing. Report back with anything you find and give as much detail as possible. Most likely there are other angels involved so keep your distance. They won’t hesitate to send you back to Hell or worse, kill you. Something isn’t right here.” My annoyance was becoming more evident in my tone and I knew he picked up on it. I saw the look of hopelessness on his face. He was cautious and I usually liked that but today it was irritating to me. I had the burning desire to uncover what was going on and I needed his help with this.
“Yes Boss, is there anything else?” he eventually replied. I knew he was hesitant but was glad for now that he stopped trying to get me to change my mind. “Just stay safe. I know you aren’t on board with this but trust me when I say it’s important. Only you can do this Damien, I trust you the most.” He nodded at my reply before I spoke again. “You may leave now.”
He swiftly exited my office and I let out a sigh as I rubbed my face. There were too many questions I needed answering. None of my research or sources had proved worthy so far and I had to know what was going on. Lily had overtook my life and I felt like I couldn’t move forward until I figured out who she really was. Mike had to have answers but I knew he wouldn’t willingly tell me so my next option was to have him followed. Angels always communicated with each other, let’s just hope that Damien listened in to one of their conversations. That had to give me some answers. I looked out the window next to my desk while pouring myself another whiskey. Just then I heard a knock on my door.
“Come in.” I commanded. One of my servants, Gerald, walked in to my surprise.
“What is it Gerald?” His nervousness was obvious, I knew he noticed I wanted to be left alone.
“Sir this letter arrived for you, the man who dropped it off asked me to give it you urgently.” This peaked my curiosity as I took the letter from him and inspected it. The handwriting was unrecognisable to me.
“Thank you Gerald.” As he left, I opened the letter and to my surprise it was from Mike. I closely read the contents.
Caleb, We need to talk. Lily does not need to be brought into this. Meet me at The Shack at 10pm tomorrow. Mike
Well then, maybe I could get the answers I needed from Mike after all. I sat there, mentally preparing myself for everything I had to try find out. I didn’t care about whatever he needed to say but I would be an i***t if I gave up this opportunity. Things were looking to be in my favour.
