Her Secret

Caleb’s POV I was sat with a frantic Damien in my office as I waited for him to calm down and tell me whatever he found out. I was half annoyed and half intrigued. It must be something important if he interrupted my date with Lily for it. “Are you ready to calmly explain what the hell is going on with you?” I asked. His stressed energy was dampening my mood even more. “I just can’t believe it, it doesn’t make sense” he repeated. It was pretty much all he had said since he walked in. “Damien” I called sternly. His attention was on me as he stopped pacing and faced me directly. “Tell me.” My command left no space for argument, I needed to know now. “It’s Lily, she’s the girl Caleb.” This peaked my interest, what could Lily have to do with anything. “What about her?” “She’s THE Girl.” We weren’t getting anywhere. I downed my whisky in an attempt to calm myself. The frustration I felt was only increasing with his vague replies. All I had to do was give him a look with my stern face for him to know to continue. I was getting bored of having to ask questions. “THE Girl” he repeated. “The girl the demons are looking for, the last one of the bloodline with Seraphim blood. The one that the demons can use to destroy Heaven and the angels. THE GIRL!” He was almost shouting by the time he had finished. “It can’t be, she doesn’t exist. Just a made up story the demons use to give themselves hope that Lucifer will win.” I could barely comprehend what he was saying, surely he was mistaken. “I’m not lying Caleb, I overheard the angels. I wasn’t sure if it could be true so I went to investigate and heard that a few of Lucifers special demons have been tracking her. They’re close to finding her and using her. She’s the one. You need to be careful, the angels will hurt you to protect her. She’s too important to them.” I just sat there for a moment, taking in what Damien had told me. It didn’t seem possible. I knew she wasn’t human but to be the last of the Seraphim bloodline wasn’t expected. She was an angel. Everything made sense now, Michael must be here to protect her from the demons. “What are you going to do? If you give her up to the demons, Lucifer would reward you greatly but it would mean completely abandoning Heaven. If you protect her, you will be an enemy of Hell but I doubt the angels will trust you enough to believe your intentions.” I knew Damien saw past my charade of wanting to know about the angels and had realised I was starting to catch feelings for Lily. Otherwise he would have advised me to give her up. This was why he was my best friend, he knew me too well. “I don’t know, it’s not our place to get involved in this war. You rejected Hell. I left Heaven. Don’t let anyone apart from us find out for the while, if the others know then Lily will be in danger. It doesn’t feel right to give her up, she’s a victim in this.” “If Lucifers demons find out that we know, we will become an enemy. He will stop at no lengths to find her.” “I know Damien, it’s just a lot to take in.” I was glad he had composed himself for now at least. I just had no idea what to say, it was so so much to take in. “ I don’t know what to do” I admitted. “I know. I hate to say it Caleb but you’re probably best off staying away from her. The angels will never let you be with her, they most likely don’t trust you. There’s a lot of risk being associated with her, it might not be the best thing for you. We don’t even know if she’s aware of who she really is, I presume so since an angel has been with her. But for all we know she could be using you to try see if you know anything about Hell. She could even be trained to use her angelic powers and you would be defenseless against her. Her blood gives her a lot of strength.” “She seems pure, I doubt she would use me like that. It’s like she is purity herself, I could never believe she would do anything to harm someone. She’s gentle and kind. I have a very hard time to believe there is a manipulative side to her nature, even if she is an angel. They might do whatever it takes for the right cause but I will not accept she is like that.” “Just be careful, there’s too much we don’t know about her and that makes this dangerous. The angel is already onto you. We have no idea what she’s been told and she may even know what you are.” I simply nodded at his response, feeling drained after this revelation. “I’ll leave you to it and check in soon. Listen to your head Caleb, not your heart. We are immortal after all. Feelings will fade.” After Damien left, I sat there looking outside my window. It was dark outside and for once I get uneasy which has never happened before. It was like something was wrong and I felt a lot of guilt at leaving Lily alone. I should have pushed to take her home from the restaurant but I had no idea if she drove or got a ride so I simply accepted her answer. I poured myself another drink before I got lost in thought again. Bit by bit I started to take in the information from tonight. Surely Lily couldn’t have known, she seemed so confused at my question when we first met. I thought back to that night as I remembered our interaction. “What are you?” I repeated to her. She seemed so confused when l asked her so I repeated it again. She met my gaze as I studied her with a powerful need to receive an answer. “I’m a waitress, training soon to be a chef. What do you do?” Her answer caught me off guard and I simply looked at her in confusion. Did she think I was asking for her job rather than what kind she belonged to? If it weren’t for the pull and her energy, I would easily believe she was a human from afar. I cared for her but Damien was right. I couldn’t get involved in this, I was a part of neither. Instead, I was happy biding my time on Earth, gaining power within the supernatural world. I didn’t want to stop seeing her suddenly so I made a resolution to myself to keep interactions to a minimal until I decided what I would do from here on. As much as I disliked Michael and his group of angels, I didn’t want to become their enemy when I knew they were protecting her. I let out a sigh and left my office to go to bed. I wanted to call Lily since I felt like I needed to check in with her but put it off for now. She had the angels, of course she would be safe. For now, I had to clear my head and choose which path I would take.
