Mike’s POV
“Wait” Lily spoke out. “How did you know where I was yesterday? Did you follow me on my date with Caleb?” I tried to reign in my anger at the mention of Caleb’s name but I’m sure it was visible to Lily.
“You need to stay away from Caleb Lily, he’s not on our side.” I really did not want to get into this, I didn’t know if she would be able to handle it. I had already told her a lot of information today and I knew it wasn’t easy to hear.
“What do you mean? Is he a demon?” Conflict stirred through me at her words. I needed to tell her who he really was but I didn’t want that to lead to any danger for her. After a moment of contemplating it, I decided to tell her the truth. The more she knew, the better decisions she could make.
“Not exactly.” I hesitated before I spoke again. “Lily, Caleb is a fallen angel. For whatever reason, he is no longer a part of Heaven. We’ve been looking into it but we aren’t certain yet if he’s working with Lucifer or not against Heaven. We are however, aware that he does have contact with some demons. This is why you need to be wary of him Lily. For all we know, he was the person who got the demon to attack you yesterday.”
She looked in pain as she spoke, almost like she was heartbroken. “That can’t be right, Caleb wouldn’t do that. He didn’t even know I was following him yesterday!”
What did she just say? “You were following him?” I questioned. That would explain why she decided to walk into a dark alley at night time. She timidly nodded in response which elicited a sigh from me.
“Lily, why were you following Caleb?” I knew I couldn’t blame her, she had no idea about our world but her decision had put her in danger, whether she meant it to or not. I wanted to know what was so important that she left herself unprotected like that.
She shyly spoke to me as she kept her head bowed, focusing on her hands rather than looking at me. “ He left our date in a rush and something seemed off to me. It feels like he was hiding something important from me and I had to know what. I didn’t want things to get too serious and for me to be heartbroken when I found out later so I decided to find out now but when he wasn’t answering my questions, I opted for following him in the hope that I would get answers that way.” She looked embarrassed as she spoke and I felt sorry for her. She had been hurt so much in life, she just wanted to protect her heart. It amazed me how pure hearted she was after suffering for so many years.
“I understand that Lils but you have to be cautious. You know what’s going on now and you know you aren’t safe if left alone. People are after you and I need you to be careful. I cannot stop you from seeing Caleb but you need to know that there is danger involved if you choose to see him. We will get to the bottom of this. All I ask is that you do your best to avoid anything that might seem remotely unsafe and whatever happens, do not go anywhere where you are alone and no one is around. That will just give any demons after you an opening to take you and they may get away with it before me or another angel can save you, okay?”
She nodded her head again and we sat there in silence for a moment
“Does he know what I am?” she shyly asked. Her question took me off guard, I didn’t know what to say.
“We don’t know. We’re trying to figure out why he’s shown an interest in you. It could be the natural pull of being around ones kind or it could be that he knows you’re different. Supernaturals can identify each other, our energy is different to humans. It’s stronger to feel if it’s someone of your own kind. He may be a fallen angel but he still has angel blood within him, that might be what’s causing the attraction. I have spoken to him Lily, he’s determined to find out why you are so important. He knows you’re different, he just doesn’t know how. We don’t know what he’ll do with that information if he knows so please, don’t tell him.”
I watched her as she got lost in thought, taking in all of this information. After a moment she spoke up.
“I know what I want to do.” I arched my eyebrow at her and waited for her to continue. “I’m going to keep on seeing Caleb.”
“Lily-” I exclaimed , but she quickly shot me down.
“Just listen to me. I need to know if he’s working with the demons, and it’s important for you to know too. I know what he is now and what’s going on so I can look for the signs and be cautious for any suspicious behaviour. You or another angel with always be around, right?” I nodded my head. “Exactly, so I won’t be in danger. You’ll be seeing what’s going on. Besides, I can’t just ignore him Mike, that’s suspicious.”
She was right, it made sense. My mind took me back to when Caleb dropped the hint that he was watching Lily and I. He wouldn’t stop just because she ignored him, he was too invested in her. He wanted to know what she was and it was suspicious if she stopped any contact suddenly. I hated the idea and found it hard to agree.
“Fine.” I reluctantly sighed. “You will receive training though, it’s not safe for you to not be able to protect yourself. It’s too late to try teach you how to use your angelic powers so we will focus on fighting skills. It’s not only you who is in danger Lily, it will be all of Heaven if they capture you.”
“That’s fine but I don’t know how good I’ll be at fighting. I’m not very strong.“
“Gabriel and I will figure something out. Learning a few moves may be the difference between you being able to run away or being caught. Let’s just hope it never comes to that. For now, let me take you home. You’ll need to pack essentials and we will move you from there on Friday. It’s not safe to live there anymore. The demons will find out where you live soon, if they haven’t already figured it out. We will arrange for the safe place to be prepared for your arrival tomorrow, okay? That gives you tonight to pack. ”
“That’s fine. Thank you Mike.” She looked at me and paused a second. “I mean Michael. It’s going to take me a while to get used to” she laughed. I was glad to see she was back to her old self.
“Mike is fine for now Princess.” I replied. “Come on, let’s get you home”
