THE DEVIL'S LOOK
***ELARA’S POV*** I jolted awake, the sound of shattering glass had disturbed my beauty sleep. My heart raced like I had woken up from a nightmare. I wanted to ignore it, but the chaotic sound didn’t stop. I jumped off the bed, leaving my room on my bare feet, my dark, silky hair waving behind me. As I drew closer, I heard the piercing sound of my mother’s scream coupled with a loud growl that sent shivers down my spine, and I picked up my pace. “Mum! Are you okay?” I called out, my voice filled with concern. My eyes widened the moment I entered the living room, it was a chaotic mess. Everything was in shreds, even the paintings on the wall had been scratched off. My gaze landed on three imposing men stationed by the door, clearly on guard. Another trio surrounded my parents, their menacing presence casting a dark shadow. “Elara run! Run!” My mother’s desperate cry pierced the air as our eyes locked, but I couldn’t feel my feet. Her face was a mask of blood, and her hair haggard. My gaze traveled to my father, who lay in a pool of blood, he was still breathing but unevenly. My vision was blurred by the sight before me. What could my parents possibly have done to deserve this, and who were these men in our house? “Who is she?” The man who held my mother by her neck asked, and his deep, alluring voice echoed in the living room, giving me a cold feeling. The men had masks on, but I could see their eyes, and the way they glowed wasn’t human-like. “She’s no one! Please let her go! Elara run!” My mother screamed, but the man landed a slap on her face, which sent her to the ground. “Mum!” I yelled as I found my way to her, ignoring the scary men. I couched down, cupping my mother’s once delicate face. “Mum, are you okay?” I asked, my voice breaking and my body trembling. “Run.” she said weakly. I couldn’t tell what happened, but by her state, I assumed she had put up a fight, which explained her bruises and weakness. I suddenly felt rage fill my body, no one has ever given me a reason to get so angry. I couldn’t explain it, but something in me wanted to erupt. I glared at the masked man hovering above us, his eyes still glowed steel red, giving him the devil’s look, but I was too angry to get terrified by it. “Who are you?! What do you want? Why are you doing this?” I yelled, trying my best to calm myself. I didn’t know what would happen if I let go, but I had a feeling something bad would happen to my parents if I did. The man, however, ignored me and walked towards my father, roughly grabbing a handful of his hair and pulling him up. “No! Let him go!” I yelled and attempted to run towards him, but I was suddenly pulled back by two strong arms. My eyes widened. When did they get behind me? “One thing you should know about me is that I always keep my promises, Ronaldo.” The man said to my father in his dangerously deep tone, giving me goosebumps. My anger vanished right away as it got replaced by fear. I struggled to break free from the men holding me, but they were too strong. My eyes widened when the man brought out a silver dagger, holding it against my father’s throat. “No! Please don’t do this!” I cried out. It was the only thing I could do now. “Please let him go, I’ll do anything.” I said, hoping he’d change his mind, but he barely looked my way. “Please, take me instead.” “No need for that, you’re next.” He responded coldly, and before I could blink, he slit my father’s throat with the silver blade. My mouth was covered immediately by one of the guys, silencing my screams. I struggled for freedom, but they were just too strong. My tears were falling uncontrollably, and I could barely feel my body at this point, like I had gone numb. When the man approached my mother with the silver dagger, I screamed in horror, but it only came out as a muffled sound since my mouth was covered. I bit on the hand of the man, hoping it’d make him let go, but he didn’t even move, making me believe he didn’t feel it. And like that, I watched in horror as my mother got killed the same way. “Let her go.” The man with the dagger said after finishing off with my mother. His eyes had gone from steel red to cobalt blue, which looked more human. I attempted to run to my parents immediately, but something stopped me. Something was happening to their bodies—more like a transformation. I froze on the spot as I watched their bodies increase in size, fur growing on every part, with the cracking sound of their bones ringing in my ears. I couldn’t describe my feelings at that moment, but I knew I was terrified. I kept telling myself I was imagining it and those weren’t my parents. Perhaps this was a prank they were pulling on me, but deep down, I knew it was real. When the transformation was complete, I stared in horror at the two dark, furry beasts on the ground. I would have called them wolves, but they were too big to be called that. I heard a low sound that seemed like a scoff, it came from the man with the dagger. “Did they think they could hide from me with a witch’s spell? Pathetic.” He said, but my gaze rested on the creatures on the ground. I always knew my parents were hiding something from me, but this was too much. Was this also the reason we had to move almost every month? “Alpha, what now?” One of the men asked, and then it hit me that I was also going to be killed. I tore my gaze off the wolves to look at the man with the dagger. I didn’t want to die tonight, not without knowing the reason for this attack and what happened to my parents. “Clean this up, I’ll handle this one.” The man responded and began approaching me with the dagger. “No! Stay away from me!” I yelled as I began wiggling my way backwards. I would have put up a fight, but there were more than five men, I wouldn’t stand a chance against them. The man got to me and grabbed my neck tightly. Even though I couldn’t see his face, the look in his eyes told me he was disgusted by me. He looked at me with pure hatred when I hadn’t done anything wrong to him. “Your parents were traitors, and that makes you one.” He said coldly, raising the dagger up. My eyes widened, and my heart raced like never before. I had to do something; I couldn’t let him kill me this way. The moment his hand began descending, I shut my eyes, screaming my lungs out as I raised my hands to block the dagger. “No!” I screamed, and I suddenly heard a loud thud, like someone had been thrown off the wall. I slowly opened my eyes, and a gasp escaped my lips. The man with the dagger was at the other end of the wall, groaning on the ground. I looked around and found the other men staring at me in shock. Two of them ran to help the Alpha as they addressed him, but he pushed them away, getting up on his own. I stared at my hands in shock. Did I really throw him off that far? “Is she a witch?” One of the men asked but the Alpha remained silent and began walking up to me. I raised my hands again, hoping whatever happened would happen again, but it didn’t. I trembled in fear of what he was going to do to me. I could see his anger through his eyes, and his aura had darkened. When he got to me, he crouched down, staring keenly at me. “Please don’t kill me.” I pleaded even though I knew he wouldn’t spare me, especially after what I did to him. He put the dagger in its sheath behind him, and before I could blink, a heavy blow landed on my face. I blacked out.
