Broken Hearted

KatieThe team and I walk back into the arena after our jog and warm up outside. The girls start heading back into the dressing room and I'm the last in line. I bend down to tie my shoelace outside of the dressing room while all the girls are inside. “Katie?” I hear and then look up. No. It can’t be. I stand up when I finish tying my shoe to face him. Spiked dark brown hair, blue eyes, fit figure, the start of a beard. He’s even better looking than when I last saw him, wearing jeans and an army green jacket. “What are you doing here, Devon?” I ask. “Visiting family for the weekend,” Devon says. “But why are you here?” I ask. Devon looks at me. I haven’t seen him since the day he broke my heart. “I thought I might find you here,” he says. “I thought that maybe we should talk.” “I have nothing to say to you,” I say. “But I wanted to say something to you,” Devon says. “You don’t answer any of my calls or texts.” “Are you surprised?” I ask. “Katie, I made a big mistake,” Devon says. “The biggest mistake I have ever made. I am so sorry for what happened. If I could take it all back, I would. In a heartbeat.” “You convinced all the guys on your floor not to tell me,” I say. “You didn’t want me to find out.” “I didn’t want to hurt you,” Devon says. “So, it was better for me to find out from overhearing a conversation in the bathroom?” I ask. “No,” Devon says. “You made me look like an i***t, Devon!” I yell at him. “Your friends all knew, and you got all of them to go along with your charade!” “Katie, please,” Devon says and steps closer to me. “Don’t come any closer,” I say sternly. “I had to hear that you hooked up with some random blonde chick from a group of girls I didn’t even know! I didn’t want to believe it. I wanted to believe it was a lie, but it wasn’t. I knew the second I asked you about it that it was true.” “Katie, it was a mistake. It was one time and she meant nothing,” Devon says. “She wasn’t nothing, Devon. She was enough to ruin our relationship over,” I say. “I was at a party, I was drinking, she started flirting with me and then…” Devon says. "Stop! I don't want to hear any excuses about why you did it," I say. “It was a mistake, Katie. And I’m sorry,” Devon says. “Why did you really do it?” I ask. “No flimsy excuses. No, ‘I was drunk’ or ‘it was only one time’. I want to know why after a year, you decide to sleep with another girl.” Devon just stares at me. Did he really think I was just going to forgive him? “I don’t know why I did it,” Devon says. “Yes, you do!” I yell at him. “You must have done it for a reason unless being in a relationship with me meant so little to you that…” “It didn’t mean nothing to me!” Devon raises his voice. “It meant everything to me. You meant everything to me. I cared about you so much. I still do.” “Then why?” I ask. “I did something stupid, Katie. Really stupid. I didn’t think you would ever find out,” Devon says. “Wow. That makes it so much better,” I say. “Katie.” “It was because a girl threw herself at you and you could get s*x with no effort,” I say. “That’s not it at all,” Devon says. “Then what is it?” I ask. “It was hard being away from you, Katie. I had a moment of weakness at some stupid party with some girl and I have regretted it ever since,” Devon says. “You really hurt me,” I say. “I know.” “And then you tried to cover it up,” I say. “You didn’t deserve to be hurt by what I did,” Devon says. “But I was,” I say. “I don’t want you to waste any more time on me or what I did,” Devon says. “I’m sorry. I want you to forgive me if you think that will help you move on.” “What makes you think I need help?” I ask. “I heard the gossip at the high school about you,” Devon says. “I know it’s because of me. I know it’s because of what I did, and I don’t want to be responsible for taking something so good and then ruining it.” “What gossip, Devon? What has been said about me that makes you think I’m ‘damaged’?” I ask. “Katie, you’re hooking up with different guys all the time,” Devon says. “That’s not you. I know it’s not.” “If you really knew me, you would know that it’s not true,” I say. “I’m not hooking up with different guys all the time. Unless hooking up is now the new word for making out.” “My brother said…” “Are you really going to believe your brother or high school rumours over me?” I ask. “Fine,” Devon says. “But I know that something is still wrong. Making out with all these guys isn’t you.” “Because I’m a girl?” I ask. “Because you’re you. I want you back the way you were,” Devon says. “You broke that girl, Devon,” I say. “You broke her, and I have been spending the past month and a half putting her back together.” “You don’t want to be this way,” Devon says. “Stop!” I yell at him. “You broke my heart! You broke it, Devon. You don’t get to be the one to fix it.” And then I turn to go to the dressing room. “Katie.” I slam the door closed behind me.
