Captured
Emory's POV
"Let me go! I only need to reach the healer at Moon hill, please let me go!"
This was me trying to plead my way into letting the guards free me. Why? I haven't committed any crime. I was just a young desperate girl trying to get a very important herb to save my dying mother.
But here I was, in chains and heading to God knows where. That is the life of the weak in Abbotville.
I sank into the cartwheel as I realized my pleas were going to fall on deaf ears no matter how hard I tried. I looked at the scary faces of the men in the cart with me and I decided it was a grave mistake they must have made.
Hopefully, they would take me to someone who would let me plead my cause or it could be the worst case scenario, I would get hanged for a crime I did not commit.
My eyes found one of the other prisoners. He was a very tall man and I am pretty sure he must be an ogre or a troll. He smirked as our gazes met and I was thankful to be very far away from him.
I looked to my right and saw a small man who did not look taller than I was but he looked like he was at least in his early forties. He looked pretty harmless to me.
"Excuse me, where are they taking us?"
At first, I thought he wasn't going to reply until he slowly turned his head and I shrieked in horror. Where there was supposed to be his eyeballs were empty sockets that looked as though I was staring into a bottomless pit.
Everyone on the cart laughed as the man's eyes returned to normal.
"Hey! Keep it down in there!" One of the soldiers who had captured us shouted and I shivered from not having recovered from the horrific sight from earlier. i guess I have lived my life sheltered from the outside world too long that I did not know what it was like out here.
I could not even imagine what was in store for us where we were going. my heart sank in dejection and I held onto the iron bars that surrounded the cart for support.
It was there I remembered the longer I remained here, the closer my mother was to her death. After today, the physicians said she would have only three days left. A tear rolled down my eyes as I thought of the possibilities.
"Men, looks like we have a crybaby here." One of the men said and they all began to laugh just as the cart stopped in front of a huge gate which I did not even need anyone to tell me was the capital gate.
This was really happening.
"Take them straight to the arena and make sure they are not weaklings and will be able to hold their own. If they are lucky, they might survive what lies ahead." One of the soldiers said as we were led out of the cart one after the other.
I looked around, even if I decided to make a run for it, I wouldn't make it very far even without the restraints on me.
We were led into an underground of tunnels which I cold only assume was a secret passageway to somewhere due to the loud noise I could hear very near, I could also assume it was a large gathering we were being led to.
"It happens every year." The man with the holes for eyes said as he came up behind me.
"You mean capturing innocent people off the streets for no reason?"
"The tournament of deaths."
The way he said the words made a cold shiver run down my spine despite not knowing what he was talking about.
"I don't know what you are talking about."
Before he could reply, a shadow fell over us and I looked up to see a giant looking down at me with a very grim expression. He suddenly reached above me to grab me and I screamed loudly only to realise something else was happening behind me.
The giant was now face to face with one of the men who had been brought captive with me and they were having a staring contest.
"That is the queen's champion. Every year, the far King and queen delights themselves in pitching their champions against each other for sports and we happen to be the appetizers or should I call it, the side dishes. That is Kanryn, one of the main courses for this year's tournament."
The far royalties! I have heard of them and apparently, they were bad news. Mother will not be happy to hear this at all.
I quickly scrambled away from the whole scenario. as I imagined that the giant's hand had landed in me. I would have been crushed to nothing.
"You don't seem like you're from here."
"I'm not."
"What brings you here then?"
"My mother's dying and I need to get her herbs."
"Looks like you will not need to worry about that anymore since there is very high possibility that you will die here."
I gave him a death stare as I kept in walking without bothering you listen to him anymore. The only thing going on in my head right now as how to escape this place and I know it would be hell. If it was just a mere tournament, maybe if I won, I would be set free.
I wasn't a bad fighter at all. In fact, I have trained all my life to keep my mother and I safe and it looked like now, I have no choice in this matter.
"I'm Drukos."
I heard him say again when I had already made up my mind to not say any word to him anymore or listen to him. I do not like the pessimists for any reason and this man seem to be full of negativity.
.
"Girl, I am talking to you!" He said and this time, he sounded very angry. I turned to him slowly.
"Do not yell at me!"
Apparently, that was louder than I had intended to make it sound and soon, a bright ray of light flashed before my eyes and I looked to see that we were in a very open circle surrounded by thousands of people watching us.
"What is this?"
"Fight! Fight!! Fight!!!"
