Chapter Forty-OneCaden was composed, his features impassive, but Hedrek was scowling.
“Where is she?” he growled. “What did you do with the mermaid?”
“We freed her,” Jack said steadily. “She doesn’t belong to you or anyone.”
Caden nodded towards Jack’s staff which Jack had unsheathed from his side. “That might work against a Creature but not against us. You can’t defeat us.”
“Maybe, but I’m willing to give it a b****y good go.” Jack thought of Kiera. He was glad he’d urged her to stay at home. At least she was safe.
To Jack’s surprise, Caden stepped away with a slight bow of his head. “Once you’re out of the way, your witch is as good as dead. I promised my brother the satisfaction of this kill.”
“You underestimate her,” Jack said, “you’ll find she can hold her own. As can I.”
