"Mate," Elara almost shouted at me again.
Lucas was looking at me with a small frown on his face, and I quickly made my apologies and rushed away. I found an omega that I knew, and asked them to give the stuff to my mom. I needed to get out of here right away and figure out what the hell was going on.
"Why are we going away from our mate?" Elara whined at me as I rushed away from the pack house.
I paused and looked around, sure I was alone now. I stood and took a few deep breaths to calm my nerves.
"Do you not know who he is?" I asked in disbelief.
"I know exactly who he is," she scolded me. "He's our mate!"
"No, that can't be right. He is the future alpha, there's no way he can be our mate. I'm sorry Elara but you've got this wrong." I was trying to convince her that an omega could never be mates with an alpha when she rudely started howling in my head.
"Mate, mate, mate!" she howled gleefully.
I was about to tell her how rude she was being, when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Cassie?" a smooth voice said. "Is everything ok?"
Shit, it was Lucas. What the hell was he doing out here? Shouldn't he be getting ready for his party?
I took a deep breath and attempted to regain my composure - which trust me is pretty hard to do with a wolf going insane inside your head. I turned around and smiled my sweetest smile.
"Sure thing Lucas, I just needed a breather."
He laughed a little and I frowned, trying to gauge what was so funny. "I'm not surprised with the way you ran out of there. It's almost as though you were running away from me.." he smiled knowingly.
Just like the night before, I blushed deeply at his words. Why was he having this affect on me?
"Duh, because he's our mate," Elara chimed in. I'd had quite enough of her input and decided to block her out.
"Look I think we need to talk," Lucas started. "Did you run away because we're mates?"
I stared at him in disbelief. How did he know that? Had he heard my wolf? I was going to kill her for making a fool of us like this. Of course an omega could not be the mate of an alpha, and Elara was way out of line to even suggest it.
As if he could read my thoughts, he chuckled to himself.
"My wolf Ezra told me," he explained. "A few minutes before I saw you he started to go insane saying that our mate was near, so I got up to look around and see if we could find who it was. I followed the scent and then you bumped into me. He was screaming at me that our mate was right there, and then you ran away before I could really say anything."
I continued to stare like some type of mental girl. What was happening right now? All I knew was that an alpha could not have someone as weak as a lowly omega for a mate. As much as I had felt jealous last night seeing Lucas with Carmen, she was the daughter of a beta and the perfect match for an alpha.
"I am so sorry to have put you through this alpha," I said while holding tears back in my eyes. I knew what I was about to say would make Elara hate me, but it was for the best. "I know you need to reject me, and I will accept. I will not cause any further bother for you".
"Reject you?" Lucas questioned, looking at me with hurt in his eyes. "Who said anything about rejecting you? Do you not want me as a mate?"
Seeing the pain in his eyes broke my heart, but I knew that he could never accept me as his mate. I needed to make sure he would not feel guilty for doing what was right and rejecting me.
"Of course any girl would be lucky to have you as a mate," I began. "But I know that I am only an omega and not worthy to be the mate of a future alpha." I looked down, unable now to meet his eyes.
I heard a low growl rumbled through his chest, and unconsciously I looked up. But instead of seeing the green eyes of Lucas looking at me, I was staring into two black pools.
"You. Are. Mine." his low voice growled at me.
A moment later, Lucas was blinking his eyes and when they opened they were once again brilliant green.
"s**t Cassie I'm so sorry if that scared you, I couldn't keep a handle on Ezra. You really freaked him out talking about rejection, and to be honest you kind of freaked me out too. You are my mate, the moon goddess made you just for me. How could you ever think I would reject you?"
He tenderly took my cheek in his hand and smiled at me.
"How did I never take any notice of you before?" he mused. "You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and all this time you were right in front of me but I just didn't see."
Once again, I found myself deeply blushing and tried to pull my face away. But before I could move, Lucas was moving towards me and planted a soft kiss on my lips. My cheeks burned even hotter.
"I'm sorry," he chuckled. "I hope that wasn't too out of line, it's just that you looked so cute little mate."
